Persepsi Masyarakat terhadap Dampak Pertambangan Batubara pada Kondisi Sosial Ekonomi Masyarakat di Kecamatan Talawi, Sawahlunto, Sumatera Barat
Kegiatan pertambangan batubara di Kecamatan Talawi menimbulkan dampak terhadap masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik masyarakat di sekitar kegiatan pertambangan, mengetahui dampak kegiatan pertambangan batubara terhadap kondisi sosial-ekonomi dan lingkungan serta mengetahui persepsi masyarakat terhadap dampak pertambangan pada kondisi sosial ekonomi serta lingkungan. Metode penelitian adalah metode kuantitatif. Dampak pertambangan terhadap kondisi sosial ekonomi serta lingkungan dianalisis secara desktiptif kuantitatif. Penilaian persepsi menggunakan skoring. Uji statistik menggunakan Kendal Tau dan Pearson untuk melihat korelasi dan regresi linear berganda, mulltinomial logistik untuk melihat hubungan antara variabel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sebagian besar masyarakat bekerja pada bidang tambang dengan pendidikan hingga SMA. Pendapatan masyarakat umumnya sebesar ≥Rp.2500000,-/bulan. Persepsi masyarakat menyatakan pertambangan tidak menimbulkan konflik dan memberikan kesempatan kerja kepada masyarakat lokal. Persepsi masyarakat pada Desa Sijantang Koto, Batu Tanjung dan Tumpuk Tangah menunjukkan nilai dominan pada terbukanya kesempatan kerja tetapi persepsi terhadap dampak lingkungan tergolong rendah diakibatkan masyarakat merasakan adanya kerusakan jalan, pencemaran air dan debu akibat kegiatan pertambangan
Seasonal variation of arsenic concentrations in tubewells in west Bengal, India.
This study was conducted to monitor the changes in arsenic concentration during different seasons in a one-year period during 2002-2003 in selected tubewells in an arsenic-affected area in the district of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal, India, and to map the location of the wells. Seasonal variations in concentrations of arsenic in water were measured from 74 selected tubewells, ranging in depth from 40 to 500 feet. Water samples were collected from these wells during winter, summer, monsoon, and the following winter in 2002-2003. A global positioning system was used for locating the tubewells, and a geographic information system was used for mapping. There was evidence of seasonal variation in concentrations of arsenic in water (p=0.02) with the minimum average concentration occurring in the summer season (694 microg/L) and the maximum in the monsoon season (906 microg/L). From the winter of 2002 to the winter of 2003, arsenic concentrations increased, irrespective of the depth of the tubewells, from an average of 464 microg/L to 820 microg/L (p<0.001). This extent of variation in arsenic concentration, if confirmed, has important implications for both epidemiological research and mitigation programmes
Enhancement of anammox performance in a novel non-woven fabric membrane bioreactor (nMBR)

To reduce operating costs and membrane fouling of conventional membrane bioreactors (cMBR), a novel MBR using a non-woven fabric membrane (nMBR) was constructed and the performance of the two MBRs was compared for anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) cultivation. The results showed that the start-up period for the nMBR (44 days) was notably shorter than that for the cMBR (56 days), meanwhile the nMBR achieved a 2-times higher nitrogen removal rate (231.5 mg N per L per d) compared to the cMBR (112.3 mg N per L per d). Illumina MiSeq sequencing showed that Candidatus Kuenenia and Candidatus Jettenia were the main distinguished anammox bacteria. FISH analysis revealed that anammox bacteria predominated in both reactors, especially in the nMBR (58%) corresponding to a qPCR analysis of 1.07 × 109 copies per mL (day 120). N2O emission analysis confirmed the advantage of the nMBR in N2O reduction to reduce the influence of greenhouse gas emission while treating identical nitrogen. These results clearly demonstrated that nMBRs could be a prospective choice for anammox start-up and performance enhancement
Management of Root Knot Nematode on Tomato Through Grafting Root Stock of Solanum Sisymbriifolium
The root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp) are difficult to manage once established in the field because of their wide host range, and soil-borne nature. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the use of resistant root stock of wild brinjal (Solanum sisymbriifolium) to reduce the loss caused by the nematodes on tomato. For the management of root-knot nematodes, grafted plant with resistant root stock of the wild brinjal was tested under farmers\u27 field conditions at Hemza of Kaski district. Grafted and non-grafted plants were produced in root-knot nematode-free soil. Around three week-old grafted and non-grafted tomato plants were transplanted in four different plastic tunnels where root-knot nematodes had been reported previously. The plants were planted in diagonal position to each other as a pair plot in 80 × 60 cm2 spacing in an average of 20 × 7 m2 plastic tunnels. Galling Index (GI) was recorded three times in five randomly selected plants in each plot at 60 days intervals. The first observation was recorded two months after transplanting. Total fruit yield was recorded from same plants. In the grafted plants, the root system was totally free from gall whereas in an average of 7.5 GI in 0-10 scale was recorded in the non-grafted plants. Fruits were harvested from time to time and cumulated after final harvest to calculate the total fruit yield. It was estimated that on an average tomato fruit yield was significantly (P>0.05) increased by 37 percent in the grafted plants compared with the non-grafted plants. Grafting technology could be used effectively for cultivation of commonly grown varieties, which are susceptible to root-knot nematodes in disease prone areas. Nucleation of a sodium droplet on C60
We investigate theoretically the progressive coating of C60 by several sodium
atoms. Density functional calculations using a nonlocal functional are
performed for NaC60 and Na2C60 in various configurations. These data are used
to construct an empirical atomistic model in order to treat larger sizes in a
statistical and dynamical context. Fluctuating charges are incorporated to
account for charge transfer between sodium and carbon atoms. By performing
systematic global optimization in the size range 1<=n<=30, we find that Na_nC60
is homogeneously coated at small sizes, and that a growing droplet is formed
above n=>8. The separate effects of single ionization and thermalization are
also considered, as well as the changes due to a strong external electric
field. The present results are discussed in the light of various experimental

Implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance to measure IgA with all coeliac screens: can an affordable solution be devised?:IgA measurement in coeliac serological screening
There has been a dramatic increase in requests for coeliac disease (CD) serological screening using IgA tissue transglutaminase antibodies (IgA-tTG). Recently, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has revised its guidance, recommending that total IgA should also be measured in all samples. This is justified since false negative results may occur with IgA deficiency. However, implementation of this guidance will incur considerable expense. Tests that measure IgA-tTG antibodies can detect IgA deficiency, indicated by low background signal. This provides an opportunity to identify samples containing IgA<0.2g/L, obviating the need for unselected IgA measurement. We investigated feasibility of this approach in two centres that use the EliA™ Celikey™ assay or QUANTA Lite® ELISA to quantify IgA-tTG antibodies. In both cases, total IgA correlated strongly with background IgA-tTG assay signal. Using the Celikey™ assay, a threshold of <17.5 response units achieved 100% sensitivity (95% confidence intervals 79.4% - 100%) for detection of IgA<0.2g/L, circumventing the need for IgA testing in >99% of sera. A similar principle was demonstrated for the QUANTA Lite® assay, whereby a threshold optical density of <0.0265 also achieved 100% sensitivity (95% confidence intervals 78.2% - 100%) for IgA<0.2g/L, avoiding unnecessary IgA testing in 67% of cases. These data suggest that CD screening tests can reliably identify samples containing low IgA in a real-life setting, obviating the need for blanket testing. However, this approach requires careful individualized validation, given the divergent efficiency with which assays identify samples containing low IgA
Conservation of Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition Process in Neural Crest Cells and Metastatic Cancer
Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a highly conserved cellular process in several species, from worms to humans. EMT plays a fundamental role in early embryogenesis, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. For neural crest cell (NCC) development, EMT typically results in forming a migratory and potent cell population that generates a wide variety of cell and tissue, including cartilage, bone, connective tissue, endocrine cells, neurons, and glia amongst many others. The degree of conservation between the signaling pathways that regulate EMT during development and metastatic cancer (MC) has not been fully established, despite ample studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis dissects the major signaling pathways involved in EMT of NCC development and MC to unravel the similarities and differences. While the FGF, TGFβ/BMP, SHH, and NOTCH pathways have been rigorously investigated in both systems, the EGF, IGF, HIPPO, Factor Receptor Superfamily, and their intracellular signaling cascades need to be the focus of future NCC studies. In general, meta-analyses of the associated signaling pathways show a significant number of overlapping genes (particularly ligands, transcription regulators, and targeted cadherins) involved in each signaling pathway of both systems without stratification by body segments and cancer type. Lack of stratification makes it difficult to meaningfully evaluate the intracellular downstream effectors of each signaling pathway. Finally, pediatric neuroblastoma and melanoma are NCC-derived malignancies, which emphasize the importance of uncovering the EMT events that convert NCC into treatment-resistant malignant cells
