    Conicoid Mirrors

The first order equation relating object and image location for a mirror of arbitrary conic-sectional shape is derived. It is also shown that the parabolic reflecting surface is the only one free of aberration and only in the limiting case of distant sources.Comment: 9 page

Testing equality of variances in the analysis of repeated measurements

    Get PDF
The problem of comparing the precisions of two instruments using repeated measurements can be cast as an extension of the Pitman-Morgan problem of testing equality of variances of a bivariate normal distribution. Hawkins (1981) decomposes the hypothesis of equal variances in this model into two subhypotheses for which simple tests exist. For the overall hypothesis he proposes to combine the tests of the subhypotheses using Fisher's method and empirically compares the component tests and their combination with the likelihood ratio test. In this paper an attempt is made to resolve some discrepancies and puzzling conclusions in Hawkins's study and to propose simple modifications.\ud \ud The new tests are compared to the tests discussed by Hawkins and to each other both in terms of the finite sample power (estimated by Monte Carlo simulation) and theoretically in terms of asymptotic relative efficiencies

System for the measurement of ultra-low stray light levels

An apparatus is described for measuring the effectiveness of stray light suppression light shields and baffle arrangements used in optical space experiments and large space telescopes. The light shield and baffle arrangement and a telescope model are contained in a vacuum chamber. A source of short, high-powered light energy illuminates portions of the light shield and baffle arrangement and reflects a portion of same to a photomultiplier tube by virtue of multipath scattering. The resulting signal is transferred to time-channel electronics timed by the firing of the high energy light source allowing time discrimination of the signal thereby enabling the light scattered and suppressed by the model to be distinguished from the walls and holders around the apparatus

    Simulating causal collapse models

We present simulations of causal dynamical collapse models of field theories on a 1+1 null lattice. We use our simulations to compare and contrast two possible interpretations of the models, one in which the field values are real and the other in which the state vector is real. We suggest that a procedure of coarse graining and renormalising the fundamental field can overcome its noisiness and argue that this coarse grained renormalised field will show interesting structure if the state vector does on the coarse grained scale.Comment: 18 pages, 8 fugures, LaTeX, Reference added, discussion of probability distribution of labellings correcte

Accounting students' expectations and transition experiences of supervised work experience

    Get PDF
Political and economic discourses position employability as a responsibility of higher education, which utilise mechanisms such as supervised work experience (SWE) to embed employability into the undergraduate curriculum. However, sparse investigation of students' contextualised experiences of SWE results in little being known about the mechanisms through which students derive employability benefits from SWE. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of students' expectation and conception of workplace learning on their transition into SWE. Analysis of accounting students' experiences reveal two broad conceptions of workplace learning, the differing impacts of which on transition experience are explored using existing learning transfer perspectives. Students displaying the more common 'technical' conception construct SWE as an opportunity to develop technical, knowledge-based expertise and abilities that prioritize product-based or cognitive learning transfer. Students with an 'experiential' conception were found to construct SWE primarily as an experience through which the development of personal skills and abilities beyond technical expertise are prioritized using process-based or socio-cultural learning transfer. Further data analysis suggests that these two learning transfer approaches have differing impacts on students' employability development which may indicate a need for universities to consider how to develop appropriate student expectations of and approaches to SWE and meaningful support for students' SWE transition

Phenomenological Constraints on Extended Quark Sectors

    Get PDF
We study the flavor physics in two extensions of the quark sector of the Standard Model (SM): a four generation model and a model with a single vector--like down--type quark (VDQ). In our analysis we take into account the experimental constraints from tree--level charged current processes, rare Kaon decay processes, rare B decay processes, the ZbbˉZ\to b \bar{b} decay, KK, BB and DD mass differences, and the CP violating parameters \frac \epsilon^\prime}{\epsilon}, ϵK\epsilon_K and aψKa_{\psi K}. All the constraints are taken at two sigma. We find bounds on parameters which can be used to represent the New Physics contributions in these models (λtbd\lambda_{t^ \prime}^{bd}, λtbs\lambda_{t^ \prime}^{bs} and λtsd\lambda_{t^ \prime}^{sd} in the four--generation model, and UbdU_{bd}, UbsU_{bs} and UsdU_{sd} in the VDQ model) due to all the above constraints. In both models the predicted ranges for aSLa_{SL} (the CP asymmetry in semi-leptonic decays), ΔMD\Delta M_D, B(K+π+ννˉ)B(K^+\to\pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu}), B(KLπ0ννˉ)B(K_L\to\pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}) and B(KLμμˉ)SDB(K_L\to \mu \bar{\mu})_{SD} can be significantly higher than the predictions of the SM, while the allowed ranges for aψKa_{\psi K} and for ΔmBS\Delta m_{B_S} are consistent with the SM prediction.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures (v3: added a reference, updated a reference, added missing units
