A chiral covariant approach to ρρ\rho\rho scattering

We analyze vector meson - vector meson scattering in a unitarized chiral theory based on a chiral covariant framework. We show that a pole assigned to the the scalar meson f0(1370)f_0(1370) can be dynamically generated from the ρρ\rho\rho interaction, while this is not the case for the tensor meson f2(1270)f_2(1270) as found in earlier works. We show that the generation of the tensor state is untenable due to an artefact of the extreme non-relativistic kinematics used before. We further consider the effects arising from the coupling of channels with different orbital angular momenta. We suggest to use the formalism outlined here to obtain more reliable results for the dynamical generation of resonances in the vector-vector interaction.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, extended version, new section with an improved solution method, results and conclusions unchange

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia: antimicrobial resistance and molecular typing of an emerging pathogen in a Turkish university hospital

ABSTRACTDespite its limited pathogenicity, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging nosocomial pathogen. This study investigated the isolation frequency, antimicrobial resistance and genotypic relationships of 205 S. maltophilia isolates from 188 patients in a university hospital between 1998 and 2003. Susceptibility profiles for 11 antimicrobial agents were determined by the NCCLS agar dilution method for non-fermentative bacteria, while enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence (ERIC)-PCR and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) were used for genotyping of the isolates. Of the 205 isolates, 56.1% were isolated in the last 2 years of the study. The risk of S. maltophilia isolation was higher in intensive care units, S. maltophilia was isolated mostly (86.8%) after hospitalisation for ≥48 h, and 90.4% of the patients had underlying diseases. Resistance levels were >60% for all antimicrobial agents tested except co-trimoxazole. High genetic diversity was found among the S. maltophilia isolates, and cross-infection with S. maltophilia was not common. Although ERIC-PCR revealed fewer genotypes than PFGE, it proved to be a rapid and easy method for S. maltophilia genotyping, and was more economical than PFGE

Mode identification in the high-amplitude {\delta} Scuti star V2367 Cyg

We report on a multi-site photometric campaign on the high-amplitude δ\delta Scuti star V2367 Cyg in order to determine the pulsation modes. We also used high-dispersion spectroscopy to estimate the stellar parameters and projected rotational velocity. Time series multicolour photometry was obtained during a 98-d interval from five different sites. These data were used together with model atmospheres and non-adiabatic pulsation models to identify the spherical harmonic degree of the three independent frequencies of highest amplitude as well as the first two harmonics of the dominant mode. This was accomplished by matching the observed relative light amplitudes and phases in different wavebands with those computed by the models. In general, our results support the assumed mode identifications in a previous analysis of Kepler data.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA

Forward Neutron Production at the Fermilab Main Injector

We have measured cross sections for forward neutron production from a variety of targets using proton beams from the Fermilab Main Injector. Measurements were performed for proton beam momenta of 58 GeV/c, 84 GeV/c, and 120 GeV/c. The cross section dependence on the atomic weight (A) of the targets was found to vary as A(alpha)A^(alpha) where α\alpha is 0.46±0.060.46\pm0.06 for a beam momentum of 58 GeV/c and 0.54±\pm0.05 for 120 GeV/c. The cross sections show reasonable agreement with FLUKA and DPMJET Monte Carlos. Comparisons have also been made with the LAQGSM Monte Carlo.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D. This version incorporates small changes suggested by referee and small corrections in the neutron production cross sections predicted by FLUK

Spin Structure of the Proton from Polarized Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function g1pg_1^p in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range 0.003<x<0.70.003 < x < 0.7 and 1GeV2<Q2<60GeV21 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured g1p(x,Q2)g_1^p(x,Q^2) to a fixed Q02Q^2_0. The first moment of g1pg_1^p at Q02=10GeV2Q^2_0 = 10 GeV^2 is Γp=0.136±0.013(stat.)±0.009(syst.)±0.005(evol.)\Gamma^p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.). This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge a0a_0 is found to be 0.28±0.160.28 \pm 0.16. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, Δg2\Delta g \simeq 2 is required to bring ΔΣ\Delta \Sigma in agreement with the Quark-Parton Model. A combined analysis of all available proton and deuteron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule.Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, uses ReVTex and smc.sty. submitted to Physical Review

First Measurement of pi e -> pi e gamma Pion Virtual Compton Scattering

Pion Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi e --> pi e gamma was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi- beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi- and the final state pi-, electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (9) and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The corresponding pi- VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+-13 nb, in agreement with the theoretical expectation sigma=34.7 nb.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, 25 references, SELEX home page is http://fn781a.fnal.gov/, revised July 21, 2002 in response to journal referee Comment

Large enhancement of deuteron polarization with frequency modulated microwaves

    Get PDF
We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically, they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of dynamic nuclear polarization.Comment: 10 pages, including the figures coming in uuencoded compressed tar files in poltar.uu, which also brings cernart.sty and crna12.sty files neede
