A possible sequential star formation in the giant molecular cloud G174+2.5
We investigate the nature of 14 embedded clusters (ECs) related to a group of
four H II regions Sh2-235, Sh2-233, Sh2-232, and Sh2-231 in the giant molecular
cloud G174 + 2.5. Projected towards the Galactic anticentre, these objects are
a possible example of the collect and collapse scenario. We derive
astrophysical parameters (age, reddening, distance, core and cluster radii) for
the ECs and investigate the relationship among their parameters. Parameters are
derived with field decontaminated 2MASS colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and
stellar radial density profiles (RDPs). The CMDs of these young clusters are
characterised by a poorly-populated main sequence and a significant number of
pre-main sequence stars, affected by differential reddening. The ECs are KKC
11, FSR 784, Sh2-235 E2, Sh2-235 Cluster, Sh2-233SE Cluster, BDSB 73, Sh2-235B
Cluster, BDSB 72, BDSB 71, Sh2-232 IR, PCS 2, and the newly found clusters CBB
1 and CBB 2. We were able to derive fundamental parameters for all ECs in the
sample. Structural parameters are derived for FSR 784, Sh2-235 Cluster and

Nitrification-denitrification in WSP: a mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in maturation ponds
A pilot-scale primary maturation pond was spiked with 15N-labelled ammonia (15NH4Cl) and 15N labelled nitrite (Na15NO2), in order to improve current understanding of the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen transformations and removal in WSP systems. Stable isotope analysis of δ15N showed that
nitrification could be considered as an intermediate step in WSP, which is masked by simultaneous denitrification, under conditions of low algal activity. Molecular microbiology analysis showed that denitrification can be considered a feasible mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in WSP, which may be supported either by ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) or by methanotrophs, in addition to nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). However, the relative supremacy of the denitrification process over other nitrogen removal mechanisms (e.g., biological uptake) depends upon phytoplanktonic activity
Projeto biotecnologia : uma parceria empresa-universidade no ensino médio como ferramenta para proporcionar educação científica de qualidade
O Colégio Bandeirantes, uma escola particular de São Paulo-Brasil, desenvolve desde 1998 um projeto interdisciplinar com alunos do Ensino Médio – Projeto Biotecnologia. O projeto é extracurricular e anual . O objetivo principal do projeto é promover, a partir de parceria com a universidade pública, uma educação científica com significativos conhecimentos básico e específico, tanto teóricos como práticos, em biotecnologia. Utiliza-se também o TELEDUC, um espaço virtual com ferramentas de ensino à distância que possibilitam a organização das atividades e monitoria de cada participante. A parceria empresa-universidade inclui consultoria e palestras remuneradas, visitas a laboratórios e estágio aos alunos com melhor desempenho. A avaliação dos alunos é feita com questionários, entrevistas, análise de textos, apresentações orais e prova escrita individual
Aligning physical elements with persons' attitude: an approach using Rasch measurement theory
Affective engineering uses mathematical models to convert the information obtained from persons' attitude to physical elements into an ergonomic design. However, applications in the domain have not in many cases met measurement assumptions. This paper proposes a novel approach based on Rasch measurement theory to overcome the problem. The research demonstrates that if data fit the model, further variables can be added to a scale. An empirical study was designed to determine the range of compliance where consumers could obtain an impression of a moisturizer cream when touching some product containers. Persons, variables and stimulus objects were parameterised independently on a linear continuum. The results showed that a calibrated scale preserves comparability although incorporating further variables
