    The Generation of Fullerenes

    We describe an efficient new algorithm for the generation of fullerenes. Our implementation of this algorithm is more than 3.5 times faster than the previously fastest generator for fullerenes -- fullgen -- and the first program since fullgen to be useful for more than 100 vertices. We also note a programming error in fullgen that caused problems for 136 or more vertices. We tabulate the numbers of fullerenes and IPR fullerenes up to 400 vertices. We also check up to 316 vertices a conjecture of Barnette that cubic planar graphs with maximum face size 6 are hamiltonian and verify that the smallest counterexample to the spiral conjecture has 380 vertices.Comment: 21 pages; added a not

    Halos around edge-on disk galaxies in the SDSS

    We present a statistical analysis of halo emission for a sample of 1047 edge-on disk galaxies imaged in five bands by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Stacking the homogeneously rescaled images of the galaxies, we can measure surface brightnesses as deep as mu_r~31 mag/arcsec^2. The results strongly support the almost ubiquitous presence of stellar halos around disk galaxies, whose spatial distribution is well described by a power-law ρ∝r−3\rho\propto r^{-3}, in a moderately flattened spheroid (c/a~0.6). The colour estimates in g-r and r-i, although uncertain, give a clear indication for extremely red stellar populations, hinting at old ages and/or non-negligible metal enrichment. These results support the idea of halos being assembled via early merging of satellite galaxies.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication on MNRAS.     Spin-lattice relaxation in cuprate superconductors

    This presentation gives a personal review of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-lattice relaxation studies in cuprate superconductors mainly dealing with the YBa2Cu4O8 compound with many examples from the ZĂŒrich laboratory. The studies were performed in both the normal and the superconducting state with various NMR isotopes (e.g.,17O,63,65Cu,135,137Ba). The relatively broad signals were mostly obtained by a phase-alternating add-subtract spin-echo technique. We will discuss the general behavior of spin-lattice relaxation in the normal state and the calculation of the dynamic spin including an approach (on the basis of thet-J model) to calculate the relaxation for plane copper, oxygen, and yttrium. An application of the Luttingerliquid model to the relaxation of chain copper in YBa2Cu3O7 and YBa2Cu4O8 is also given. We then will deal with characteristic features of the YBa2Cu4O8 structure: the spin gap, an electronic crossover in the normal state, the single-spin fluid model, and the d-wave pairin

    We review work, done mainly at the author's laboratory, on the spin gap which is the NMR manifestation of the pseudogap observed in the normal state of high-temperature superconductors. The relation of the spin gap to an electronic crossover in YBa2Cu4O8 is discussed. A possible explanation of both effects by assuming a charge density wave transition is presented. This suggestion is supported by measuring the isotope dependence of the spin gap in YBa2Cu4O

    Cross border Classical Swine Fever control: Improving Dutch and German crisis management systems by an integrated public-private approach

    The objective of this research approach is to analyse in which ways crisis management measures against Classical Swine Fever (CSF) can be improved by a public private cross border model. A core activity contains the analysis of information and communication systems: In a case study it has been empirically analysed if a sufficient supply of public and private information enables crisis managers at both sides of the Dutch-German border area to take decisions about CSF control more efficient. At the end of this approach a new crisis management model had been developed. One of the most important aspects thereby is the assessment of data: (1) within private quality management systems in normal times according to the benefit for public management tasks in times of crisis and (2) within public crisis management systems according to the benefit for cross-border CSF-control activities. To this effect two different methodological approaches have been combined within the model: (1) a method to identify and illustrate public actors and their options in crisis management decision making and (2) a system of communication and information exchange between public and private as well as Dutch and German actors (engage& exchange model) which permit to collect and to evaluate data in addition for a predefined time period are activated

    Electronic properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors as seen by Cu and O NMR/NQR

    Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) allow the investigation of electronic properties at the atomic level. We will report on such studies of typical members of the the Y-Ba-Cu-O family such as YBa2Cu30(6 + x) (1-2-3-(6 + x)), YBa2Cu4O8 (1-2-4) and Y2Ba4Cu7015 (2-4-7) with many examples of recent work performed in our laboratory. In particular, we will deal with Knight shift and relaxation studies of copper and oxygen. We will discuss important issues of current studies such as: (1) Existence of a common electronic spin-susceptibility in the planes (and perhaps in the chains) of 1-2-4; (2) Strong evidence for the existence of a pseudo spin-gap of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in 1-2-4 and 2-4-7; (3) Evidence for d-wave pairing in 1-2-4; (4) Strong coupling of inequivalent Cu-O planes in 2-4-7 and possible origin for the high Tc value of this compound; and (5) The possibility to describe NMR data in the framework of a charge-excitation picture
