Quantized vortices and collective oscillations of a trapped Bose condensed gas
Using a sum rule approach we calculate the frequency shifts of the quadrupole
oscillations of a harmonically trapped Bose gas due to the presence of a
quantized vortex. Analytic results are obtained for positive scattering lengths
and large N where the shift relative to excitations of opposite angular
momentum is found to be proportional to the quantum circulation of the vortex
and to decrease as N^{-2/5}. Results are also given for smaller values of N
covering the transition between the ideal gas and the Thomas-Fermi limit. For
negative scattering lengths we predict a macroscopic instability of the vortex.
The splitting of the collective frequencies in toroidal configurations is also

Structure of boson systems beyond the mean-field
We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body
correlations. We use the hyperspherical adiabatic method and a decomposition of
the wave function in two-body amplitudes. An analytic parametrization is used
for the adiabatic effective radial potential. We discuss the structure of a
condensate for arbitrary scattering length. Stability and time scales for
various decay processes are estimated. The previously predicted Efimov-like
states are found to be very narrow. We discuss the validity conditions and
formal connections between the zero- and finite-range mean-field
approximations, Faddeev-Yakubovskii formulation, Jastrow ansatz, and the
present method. We compare numerical results from present work with mean-field

Fermionization of a bosonic gas under highly-elongated confinement: A diffusion quantum Monte Carlo study
The diffusion quantum Monte Carlo technique is used to solve the many-body
Schroedinger equation fully quantum mechanically and nonperturbatively for
bosonic atomic gases in cigar-shaped confining potentials. By varying the
aspect ratio of the confining potential from 1 (spherical trap) to 10000
(highly elongated trap), we characterize the transition from the
three-dimensional regime to the (quasi-)one-dimensional regime. Our results
confirm that the bosonic gas undergoes ``fermionization'' for large aspect
ratios. Importantly, many-body correlations are included explicitly in our

Paediatric malaria case-management with Artemether-Lumefantrine in Zambia: a repeat cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND
Zambia was the first African country to change national antimalarial treatment policy to artemisinin-based combination therapy – artemether-lumefantrine. An evaluation during the early implementation phase revealed low readiness of health facilities and health workers to deliver artemether-lumefantrine, and worryingly suboptimal treatment practices. Improvements in the case-management of uncomplicated malaria two years after the initial evaluation and three years after the change of policy in Zambia are reported.
METHODS
Data collected during the health facility surveys undertaken in 2004 and 2006 at all outpatient departments of government and mission facilities in four Zambian districts were analysed. The surveys were cross-sectional, using a range of quality of care assessment methods. The main outcome measures were changes in health facility and health worker readiness to deliver artemether-lumefantrine, and changes in case-management practices for children below five years of age presenting with uncomplicated malaria as defined by national guidelines.
RESULTS.
In 2004, 94 health facilities, 103 health workers and 944 consultations for children with uncomplicated malaria were evaluated. In 2006, 104 facilities, 135 health workers and 1125 consultations were evaluated using the same criteria of selection. Health facility and health worker readiness improved from 2004 to 2006: availability of artemether-lumefantrine from 51% (48/94) to 60% (62/104), presence of artemether-lumefantrine dosage wall charts from 20% (19/94) to 75% (78/104), possession of guidelines from 58% (60/103) to 92% (124/135), and provision of in-service training from 25% (26/103) to 41% (55/135). The proportions of children with uncomplicated malaria treated with artemether-lumefantrine also increased from 2004 to 2006: from 1% (6/527) to 27% (149/552) in children weighing 5 to 9 kg, and from 11% (42/394) to 42% (231/547) in children weighing 10 kg or more. In both weight groups and both years, 22% (441/2020) of children with uncomplicated malaria were not prescribed any antimalarial drug.
CONCLUSION
Although significant improvements in malaria case-management have occurred over two years in Zambia, the quality of treatment provided at the point of care is not yet optimal. Real-time pion propagation in finite-temperature QCD
We argue that in QCD near the chiral limit, at all temperatures below the
chiral phase transition, the dispersion relation of soft pions can be expressed
entirely in terms of three temperature-dependent quantities: the pion screening
mass, a pion decay constant, and the axial isospin susceptibility. The
definitions of these quantities are given in terms of equal-time (static)
correlation functions. Thus, all three quantities can be determined directly by
lattice methods. The precise meaning of the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation

Is the prevalence of psychiatric disorders associated with urbanization?
Objectives In many countries, the total rate of psychiatric disorders tends to be higher in urban areas than in rural areas. The relevance of this phenomenon is that it may help in identifying environmental factors that are important in the pathogenesis of mental disorders. Moreover, urban preponderance suggests that the allocation of funds and services should take urbanization levels into account. Method The Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS) used the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to determine the prevalence of DSM-III-R disorders in a sample of 7,076 people aged 18–64. The sample was representative of the population as a whole. The study population was assigned to five urbanization categories defined at the level of municipalities. The association between urbanization and 12-month prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders was studied using logistic regression taking several confounders into account. Results The prevalence of psychiatric disorders gradually increased over five levels of urbanization. This pattern remained after adjustment for a range of confounders. Comorbidity rates also increased with level of urbanization. Conclusion This study confirms that psychiatric disorders are more common and more complex in more urbanized areas. This should be reflected in service allocation and may help in identifying environmental factors of importance for the aetiology of mental disorders. j Key words population survey – psychiatric epidemiology – mental disorders – urbanizatio
An empirical investigation of dance addiction
Although recreational dancing is associated with increased physical and psychological well-being, little is known about the harmful effects of excessive dancing. The aim of the present study was to explore the psychopathological factors associated with dance addiction. The sample comprised 447 salsa and ballroom dancers (68% female, mean age: 32.8 years) who danced recreationally at least once a week. The Exercise Addiction Inventory (Terry, Szabo, & Griffiths, 2004) was adapted for dance (Dance Addiction Inventory, DAI). Motivation, general mental health (BSI-GSI, and Mental Health Continuum), borderline personality disorder, eating disorder symptoms, and dance motives were also assessed. Five latent classes were explored based on addiction symptoms with 11% of participants belonging to the most problematic class. DAI was positively associated with psychiatric distress, borderline personality and eating disorder symptoms. Hierarchical linear regression model indicated that Intensity (ß=0.22), borderline (ß=0.08), eating disorder (ß=0.11) symptoms, as well as Escapism (ß=0.47) and Mood Enhancement (ß=0.15) (as motivational factors) together explained 42% of DAI scores. Dance addiction as assessed with the Dance Addiction Inventory is associated with indicators of mild psychopathology and therefore warrants further research
Correlated N-boson systems for arbitrary scattering length
We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body
correlations and attractive finite-range potentials. We use a hyperspherical
adiabatic method and apply a Faddeev type of decomposition of the wave
function. We discuss the structure of a condensate as function of particle
number and scattering length. We establish universal scaling relations for the
critical effective radial potentials for distances where the average distance
between particle pairs is larger than the interaction range. The correlations
in the wave function restore the large distance mean-field behaviour with the
correct two-body interaction. We discuss various processes limiting the
stability of condensates. With correlations we confirm that macroscopic
tunneling dominates when the trap length is about half of the particle number
