    From current vaccine recommendations to everyday practices: An analysis in five sub-Saharan African countries

    AbstractBackgroundEstimates of WHO and UNICEF vaccination coverage may provide little insight into the extent to which vaccinations are administered on time. Yet, lack of adherence to the recommended age to receive a specific vaccination may have detrimental health consequences. For example, delays in receiving vaccination will prolong the risk of lack of protection, often when disease risk is highest, such as during early infancy. We estimated the reported age at vaccination, and vaccine coverage at different ages in children from five sub-Saharan African countries.MethodsWe analyzed data from the latest Demographic and Health Programme databases available for Burkina Faso 2010 (n=15,044 observations), Ghana 2008 (n=2992), Kenya 2008–9 (n=6079), Senegal 2010–11 (n=12,326), and Tanzania 2010 (n=8023). We assessed, amongst vaccinees, the exact age when vaccine was administered for the three infant doses of pentavalent vaccine (DTP) and the first dose of measles-containing-vaccine (MCV), as well as the proportion of children immunized with these antigens by a certain age. Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) coverage was evaluated as a potential contact visit for vaccine introduction.ResultsFor all DTP doses, the median intervals between recommended and actual ages of receiving vaccination ranged from 12, 17 and 23 days in Kenya, to 22, 33 and 45 days in Senegal. MCV was mostly given during the recommended age of 9 months. In each country, there was a large discrepancy in the median age at DTP vaccination between regions. VAS coverage in young children ranged from 30.3% in Kenya to 78.4% in Senegal, with large variations observed between areas within each study country.ConclusionIn the context of new vaccine introduction, age of children at vaccination should be monitored to interpret data on vaccine-preventable disease burden, vaccine effectiveness, and vaccine safety, and to adapt targeted interventions and messages

    International audienceWithin the context of the reciprocal recurrent selection scheme developed in 1989 by CIRAD-Fore t on Eucalyptus, RAPD essays were performed to assess the genetic diversity in the two species E. urophylla and E. grandis. The molecular markers were split into two parts: the speciÞc markers (present with di¤erent fre- quencies in the two species) and the common markers (present with similar frequencies in the two species). The study analyses the structure of genetic diversity within and between the two species of Eucalyptus. Dif- ferent genetic distances are worked out for use in pre- diction equations of the individual tree trunk volume of hybrids at 38 months. Each distance is expressed as the sum of the general genetic distance and the speciÞc genetic distance. The general genetic distance based on the double presence plus the double absence of bands seems to be an interesting co-variate to use in a factor regression model.     We investigate the connection between Tamari lattices and the Thompson group F, summarized in the fact that F is a group of fractions for a certain monoid F+sym whose Cayley graph includes all Tamari lattices. Under this correspondence, the Tamari lattice operations are the counterparts of the least common multiple and greatest common divisor operations in F+sym. As an application, we show that, for every n, there exists a length l chain in the nth Tamari lattice whose endpoints are at distance at most 12l/n.Comment: 35page

    Rapport d’étape : première étape : journées de réflexion entre les acteurs du rétablissement au Québec

    L’objectif de ce rapport est de présenter les résultats des trois jours de réflexion réalisés au printemps 2019 sur le rétablissement au Québec. L’analyse de ces résultats a permis d’identifier trois axes stratégiques qui permettront d’accroître les capacités de rétablissement post-sinistre au Québec. Pour chacun des axes stratégiques, un outil de rétablissement sera prototypé lors de la prochaine phase de ce projet de recherche-action à l’automne 2019. Dans ce rapport, nous présentons d’abord un récapitulatif de la démarche utilisée, puis nous clarifions la notion de rétablissement à partir des écrits scientifiques. Par la suite, nous analysons l’état du rétablissement au Québec à la lumière des ateliers réalisés au courant de la première phase de la démarche d’accompagnement. De ce portrait issu du contexte québécois, nous déterminons les enjeux qui, selon les participants, freinent le développement et la mise en oeuvre d’outils de rétablissement ainsi que les leviers pouvant permettre son développement. Sur la base de cette analyse, nous proposons un cadre d’analyse reposant sur trois grands axes stratégiques qui répondent au besoin de faciliter le rétablissement au Québec. À terme, ce cadre permettra d’orienter la prochaine phase de la démarche, soit celle du prototypage d’outils concrets afin d’améliorer la phase de rétablissement post-sinistre au Québec

We present here a new chromosome-scale genome of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), which includes the complete sequence of all centromeres. Gerbils are thus the one of the first vertebrates to have their centromeres completely sequenced. Gerbil centromeres are composed of four different repeats of length 6, 37, 127, or 1,747 bp, which occur in simple alternating arrays and span 1-6 Mb. Gerbil genomes have both an extensive set of GC-rich genes and chromosomes strikingly enriched for constitutive heterochromatin. We sought to determine if there was a link between these two phenomena and found that the two heterochromatic chromosomes of the Mongolian gerbil have distinct underpinnings: Chromosome 5 has a large block of intraarm heterochromatin as the result of a massive expansion of centromeric repeats, while chromosome 13 is comprised of extremely large (>150 kb) repeated sequences.     Risk of spontaneous abortion and other pregnancy outcomes in 15–25 year old women exposed to human papillomavirus-16/18 AS04-adjuvanted vaccine in the United Kingdom

    AbstractBackgroundWe assessed the risk of spontaneous abortion (SA) after inadvertent exposure to HPV-16/18-vaccine during pregnancy using an observational cohort design.MethodsThe study population included women aged 15–25 years registered with the Clinical Practice Research Datalink General Practice OnLine Database in the United Kingdom (UK), who received at least one HPV-16/18-vaccine dose between 1st September 2008 and 30th June 2011. Exposed women had the first day of gestation between 30 days before and 45 days (90 days for the extended exposure period) after any HPV-16/18-vaccine dose. Non-exposed women had the first day of gestation 120 days–18 months after the last dose. SA defined as foetal loss between weeks 1 and 23 of gestation (UK definition).ResultsThe frequency of SA was 11.6% (among 207 exposed) and 9.0% (632 non-exposed), women: hazard ratio (HR) adjusted for age at first day of gestation 1.30 (95% confidence interval: 0.79–2.12). Sensitivity analysis per number of doses administered (−30 to +45-day risk period) showed a HR for SA of 1.11 (0.64–1.91) for 18/178 women with one dose during the risk period versus 2.55 (1.09–5.93) in 6/29 women with two doses within a 4–5 weeks period. The proportion of pre-term/full-term/postterm deliveries, small/large for gestational age infants, and birth defects was not significantly different between exposed and non-exposed women. Results were consistent using a (United States) SA definition of foetal loss between weeks 1–19 and/or the extended risk period.ConclusionThere was no evidence of an increased risk of SA and other adverse pregnancy outcomes in young women inadvertently HPV-16/18-vaccinated around gestation. Nevertheless, women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant are advised to postpone vaccination until completion of pregnancy

    Tailoring the pressure-drop in multi-layered open-cell porous inconel structures

    This study investigates the pressure-drop behaviour associated with airflow through bulk and structurally tailored multi-layered, open-cell porous Inconel structures over a wide airflow velocity range (0–50 m s-1). The effect of airflow velocity on the pressure-drop behaviour as a function of the sample thickness is presented and related to the flow behaviour corresponding to the relevant flow regimes (Darcy, Forchheimer, Turbulent and Postturbulent). Entrance effects are highlighted as a source of the pressure-drop increase for porous structures with air gaps, regardless of their sizes, as long as they are larger than those generated by loosely-stacked structures. The pressure-drops for gapped porous structures and the mathematical-summation of the pressure drop for the corresponding individual components, were in very good agreement, at lower airflow velocities. The potential for mass-efficient porous structures, providing a high pressure drop, was demonstrated using multiple thin porous laminates separated by air gaps
