Antioxidants of natural plant origins: from sources to food industry applications
ReviewIn recent years, great interest has been focused on using natural antioxidants in food
products, due to studies indicating possible adverse effects that may be related to the consumption of
synthetic antioxidants. A variety of plant materials are known to be natural sources of antioxidants,
such as herbs, spices, seeds, fruits and vegetables. The interest in these natural components is
not only due to their biological value, but also to their economic impact, as most of them may be
extracted from food by-products and under-exploited plant species. This article provides an overview
of current knowledge on natural antioxidants: their sources, extraction methods and stabilization
processes. In addition, recent studies on their applications in the food industry are also addressed;
namely, as preservatives in different food products and in active films for packaging purposes and

A low-noise CMOS front-end for TOF-PET
An analogue CMOS front-end for triggering and amplification of signals produced by a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) coupled to a LYSO scintillator is proposed. The solution is intended for time-of-flight measurement in compact Positron Emission Tomography (TOF-PET) medical imaging equipments where excellent timing resolution is required (approximate to 100 ps). A CMOS 0.13 mu m technology was used to implement such front end, and the design includes preamplification, shaping, baseline holder and biasing circuitry, for a total silicon area of 500x90 mu m. Waveform sampling and time-over-threshold (ToT) techniques are under study and the front-end provides fast and shaped outputs for time and energy measurements. Post layout simulation results show that, for the trigger of a single photoelectron, the time jitter due to the pre-amplifier noise can be as low as 15 ps (FWHM), for a photodetector with a total capacitance of 70 pF. The very low input impedance of the pre-amplifier (approximate to 5 Omega) allows 1.8 ns of peaking time, at the cost of 10 mW of power consumption
New Suns in the Cosmos?
The present work reports on the discovery of three stars that we have
identified to be rotating Sun-like stars, based on rotational modulation
signatures inferred from light curves from the CoRoT mission's Public Archives.
In our analysis, we performed an initial selection based on rotation period and
position in the Period-- diagram. This revealed that the stars
CoRoT IDs 100746852, 102709980, and 105693572 provide potentially good matches
to the Sun with similar rotation period. To refine our analysis, we applied a
novel procedure, taking into account the fluctuations of the features
associated to photometric modulation at different time intervals and the
fractality traces that are present in the light curves of the Sun and of these
"New Sun" candidates alike. In this sense, we computed the so-called Hurst
exponent for the referred stars, for a sample of fourteen CoRoT stars with sub-
and super-solar rotational periods, and for the Sun, itself, in its active and
quiet phases. We found that the Hurst exponent can provide a strong
discriminant of Sun-like behavior, going beyond what can be achieved with
solely the rotation period itself. In particular, we find that CoRoT ID
105693572 is the star that most closely matches the solar rotation properties,
as far as the latter's imprints on light curve behavior is concerned. The stars
CoRoT IDs 100746852 and 102709980 have significant smaller Hurst exponents than
the Sun, notwithstanding their similarity in rotation periods.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures; ApJLetters accepte
Nutrition, quality and performance in marine fish larvae
Elucidating how the saprophytic fungus Aspergillus nidulans uses the plant polyester suberin as carbon source
Lipid polymers in plant cell walls, such as cutin and suberin, build recalcitrant hydrophobic protective barriers. Their degradation is of foremost importance for both plant pathogenic and saprophytic fungi. Regardless of numerous reports on fungal degradation of emulsified fatty acids or cutin, and on fungi-plant interactions, the pathways involved in the degradation and utilisation of suberin remain largely overlooked. As a structural component of the plant cell wall, suberin isolation, in general, uses harsh depolymerisation methods that destroy its macromolecular structure. We recently overcame this limitation isolating suberin macromolecules in a near-native state.work partially supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA financial mechanism (Project PT015), FCT: grant (PEst-OE/EQB/LA0004/2013) and fellowships (SFRH/BD/38378/2007, SFRH/BD/66396/2009, SFRH/BD/66030/2009, SFRH/BD/48286/2008), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian fellowship (21-95587-B)

A staggered coupling strategy for the finite element analysis of warm deep drawing process
The thermomechanical finite element analysis of warm forming processes enables an improved comprehension of the process parameters affecting the material formability. However, the thermal and mechanical coupling problem is still a challenge from the computational standpoint. A staggered strategy for the thermomechanical coupling problem is presented in this study, which is based on an isothermal split approach and allows the treatment of the two problems separately. The exchange of information between the mechanical and the thermal problem is performed to achieve a compromise between computational cost and accuracy. The proposed algorithm was implemented in DD3IMP in-house finite element code. Its performance is analysed and compared with a classical strategy commonly employed for solving thermomechanical problems. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under projects with reference UID/EMS/00285/2013, PTDC/EMS-TEC/0702/2014 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016779) and PTDC/EMS-TEC/6400/2014(POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016876) by UE/FEDER through the program COMPETE2020. Areas of natural occurrence of melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811(Hymenoptera: Apidae) in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species
