    Tamaño del rebaño e importancia de los factores productivos en los sistemas de producción ovina de leche de León (España)

    El objetivo del trabajo es estudiar la importancia que los ganaderos dan a los diferentes factores condicionantes del sistema productivo. La información ha sido obtenida de 80 encuestas a titulares de explotaciones de ovino lechero de la provincia de León (España), en noviembre de 2006. Las encuestas se agruparon en función del número de ovejas : <350, de 350 a 650 y más de 650. Más del 75% de las explotaciones pertenecen a Cooperativas y más del 85% de las explotaciones poseen raza Assaf. La proporción de explotaciones que piensan aumentar el tamaño de su rebaño es más del doble en el grupo de las grandes que en las pequeñas y más del 50% de los ganaderos piensan mantener el tamaño actual de sus rebaños. Las UTH de las explotaciones y las ovejas/UTH aumentaron al hacerlo el tamaño de las explotaciones. El porcentaje de explotaciones que poseen mano de obra asalariada y que tienen sucesión es mayor en las explotaciones grandes. Los factores relacionados con la mecanización de tareas, la pertenencia a una cooperativa, el asesoramiento técnico y la posibilidad de disponer en el mercado de reproductores con garantías son considerados de gran importancia por la mayoría de los ganaderos.Peer reviewe

    A tectonic carpet of Variscan flysch at the base of a rootless accretionary prism in northwestern Iberia: U–Pb zircon age constrains from sediments and volcanic olistoliths

    The allochthonous complexes of Galicia–Trás-os-Montes Zone (NW Iberia) are part of a rootless tectonic stack which preserves part of a Variscan accretionary prism. They are formed by individual tectonic slices marked by specific tectonometamorphic evolutions, which were piled up in a piggy-back mode onto its relative autochthon, the Central Iberian Zone (CIZ). Allochthony decreases from the structurally upper thrust sheets towards the lower ones. The lowermost unit of the stack is known as the Parautochthon or Schistose Domain. It is characterized by a low metamorphic grade in contrast with higher temperatures and/or pressures estimated for the overlying allochthonous units and shares the stratigraphic sequence with the underlying autochthon. The Parautochthon is divided in two structural and stratigraphic sub-units: (i) the Lower Parautochthon (LPa) is made of synorogenic flysch-type sediments with varied turbiditic units and olistostrome bodies, showing Upper Devonian–lower Carboniferous age according to the youngest zircon populations and fossiliferous content; (ii) the Upper Parautochthon (UPa) is composed of highly deformed preorogenic upper Cambrian–Silurian volcano-sedimentary sequence comparable with the nearby autochthon and to some extent, also with the high-P and low-T Lower Allochthon laying structurally above. The UPa was emplaced onto the LPa along the Main-Trás-os-Montes Thrust, and the LPa became detached from the CIZ relative autochthon by a regional-scale structure, the Basal Lower Parautochthon Detachment, which follows a weak horizon of Silurian carbonaceous slates. A review on the detrital zircon studies on the synorogenic LPa complemented by zircon dating of 17 new samples is presented here. The results support the extension of the LPa underneath the NW Iberian allochthonous complexes, from Cabo Ortegal, to Bragança and Morais massifs. Its current exposure follows the lowermost tectonic boundary between the Galicia–Trás-os-Montes (allochthon) and Central Iberian (autochthon) zones. The youngest zircon age populations point to a maximum sedimentation age for the LPa formations ranging from Famennian to Serpukhovian and supports the piggy-back mode of emplacement of the Galicia–Trás-os-Montes Zone, of which it represents the latest imbricate. The zircon age populations in the LPa allow the sedimentary provenance areas to be constrained, showing the intervention of nearby sources (mostly the UPa) and/or multiply recycled and long-transport sediments with a typically north-central Gondwana age fingerprint, also found in the Lower Allochthon, UPa and Autochthon. Complementary geochronology of volcanic olistoliths trapped in the LPa sediments and of late Cambrian to Upper Ordovician rhyolites from the UPa is also presented. It shows a direct relationship between the major blocks source area (UPa) and the setting place (LPa).     IntroducciónEl seudoaneurisma aórtico con infección de prótesis en aorta ascendente (PIPAA) tras cirugía cardíaca es una entidad infrecuente (0,9-2%) pero grave (mortalidad intrahospitalaria > 40%). El tratamiento más extendido es la cirugía con recambio protésico y terapia antibiótica adecuada a antibiograma; pero el recambio protésico en ocasiones es técnicamente inviable e incluso puede aumentar la mortalidad perioperatoria. Existen casos en los que se ha preservado la prótesis infectada con éxito terapéutico, realizándose limpieza/reparación quirúrgica local apoyada con omentoplastia. No existe consenso en la duración de la terapia médica, y el tratamiento «supresor a largo plazo» en ocasiones se complica por efectos adversos de los antibióticos.ObjetivosAportar dos nuevos casos y evaluar el tratamiento realizado tras un seguimiento a largo plazo.MétodoAnálisis descriptivo de aspectos microbiológicos, farmacológicos y resultados de la terapia realizada, en dos casos de PIPAA de pacientes intervenidos por disección de aorta (prótesis de dacrón en posición supracoronariana) y por insuficiencia y anuloectasia aórtica (tubo valvulado). Se realiza tratamiento quirúrgico conservador de la prótesis aórtica (limpieza quirúrgica, reparación del seudoaneurisma y omentoplastia), asociándose terapia antibiótica prolongada ajustada a antibiograma.ConclusiónAmbos casos presentan, tras más de 1 año de seguimiento, según criterios clínicos, microbiológicos y pruebas de imagen, ausencia de signos de recidiva infecciosa, resultando la terapia adecuada. Aun sin poder establecer tiempo óptimo de tratamiento, serían razonables 6 semanas de tratamiento endovenoso seguidas de 24 semanas de terapia supresora, a ser posible oral, y valorar su retirada siempre que no existan signos de recidiva

    The Histidine-Phosphocarrier Protein of the Phosphoenolpyruvate: Sugar Phosphotransferase System of Bacillus sphaericus Self-Associates

    The phosphotransferase system (PTS) is involved in the use of carbon sources in bacteria. Bacillus sphaericus, a bacterium with the ability to produce insecticidal proteins, is unable to use hexoses and pentoses as the sole carbon source, but it has ptsHI genes encoding the two general proteins of the PTS: enzyme I (EI) and the histidine phosphocarrier (HPr). In this work, we describe the biophysical and structural properties of HPr from B. sphaericus, HPrbs, and its affinity towards EI of other species to find out whether there is inter-species binding. Conversely to what happens to other members of the HPr family, HPrbs forms several self-associated species. The conformational stability of the protein is low, and it unfolds irreversibly during heating. The protein binds to the N-terminal domain of EI from Streptomyces coelicolor, EINsc, with a higher affinity than that of the natural partner of EINsc, HPrsc. Modelling of the complex between EINsc and HPrbs suggests that binding occurs similarly to that observed in other HPr species. We discuss the functional implications of the oligomeric states of HPrbs for the glycolytic activity of B. sphaericus, as well as a strategy to inhibit binding between HPrsc and EINsc

    Más allá de la hiperglucemia: la variabilidad glucémica como factor pronóstico en el infarto cerebral agudo

    Glycaemic variability (GV) refers to variations in blood glucose levels, and may affect stroke outcomes. This study aims to assess the effect of GV on acute ischaemic stroke progression. We performed an exploratory analysis of the multicentre, prospective, observational GLIAS-II study. Capillary glucose levels were measured every 4 hours during the first 48 hours after stroke, and GV was defined as the standard deviation of the mean glucose values. The primary outcomes were mortality and death or dependency at 3 months. Secondary outcomes were in-hospital complications, stroke recurrence, and the impact of the route of insulin administration on GV. Results: A total of 213 patients were included. Higher GV values were observed in patients who died (n = 16; 7.8%; 30.9 mg/dL vs 23.3 mg/dL; p = 0.05). In a logistic regression analysis adjusted for age and comorbidity, both GV (OR = 1.03; 95% CI, 1.003-1.06; p = 0.03) and stroke severity (OR = 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04-1.2; p = 0.004) were independently associated with mortality at 3 months. No association was found between GV and the other outcomes. Patients receiving subcutaneous insulin showed higher GV than those treated with intravenous insulin (38.95 mg/dL vs 21.34 mg/dL; p < 0.001). Conclusions: High GV values during the first 48 hours after ischaemic stroke were independently associated with mortality. Subcutaneous insulin may be associated with higher VG levels than intravenous administration.La variabilidad glucémica (VG) hace referencia a las oscilaciones en los niveles de glucosa en sangre y podría influir en el pronóstico del ictus. Analizar el efecto de la VG en la evolución del infarto cerebral agudo (IC). Análisis exploratorio del estudio GLIAS-II (multicéntrico, prospectivo y observacional). Se midieron los niveles de glucemia capilar cada cuatro horas durante las primeras 48 horas y la VG se definió como la desviación estándar de los valores medios. Variables principales: mortalidad y muerte o dependencia a los tres meses. Variables secundarias: porcentaje de complicaciones intrahospitalarias y de recurrencia de ictus, e influencia de la vía de administración de insulina sobre la VG. Se incluyeron 213 pacientes. Los pacientes que fallecieron (N = 16;7,8%) presentaron mayores valores de VG (30,9 mg/dL vs. 23,3 mg/dL; p = 0,05). En el análisis de regresión logística ajustado por edad y comorbilidad, tanto la VG (OR = 1,03; IC del 95%: 1,003-1,06: p = 0,03) como la gravedad del IC (OR = 1,12; IC del 95%: 1,04-1,2; p = 0,004) se asociaron de forma independiente con la mortalidad a los tres meses. No se encontró asociación entre la VG y las demás variables de estudio. Los pacientes que recibieron tratamiento con insulina subcutánea mostraron una mayor VG que los tratados con insulina intravenosa (38,9 mg/dL vs. 21,3 mg/dL; p < 0,001). Conclusiones: Valores elevados de VG durante las primeras 48 horas tras el IC se asociaron de forma independiente con la mortalidad.     Grafting Snake Melon [Cucumis melo L. subsp. melo Var. flexuosus (L.) Naudin] in Organic Farming: Effects on Agronomic Performance; Resistance to Pathogens; Sugar, Acid, and VOC Profiles; and Consumer Acceptance

    The performance of snake melon [Cucumis melo var. flexuosus (L.)] in organic farming was studied under high biotic and salt stress conditions. Soilborne diseases (mainly caused by Macrophomina phaseolina and Neocosmospora falciformis), combined with virus incidence [Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV), Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), and Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV)] and Podosphaera xanthii attacks, reduced yield by more than 50%. Snake melon susceptibility to M. phaseolina and Monosporascus cannonballus was proved in pathogenicity tests, while it showed some degree of resistance to Neocosmospora keratoplastica and N. falciformis. On the contrary, salt stress had a minor impact, although a synergic effect was detected: yield losses caused by biotic stress increased dramatically when combined with salt stress. Under biotic stress, grafting onto the melon F1Pat81 and wild Cucumis rootstocks consistently reduced plant mortality in different agroecological conditions, with a better performance compared to classic Cucurbita commercial hybrids. Yield was even improved under saline conditions in grafted plants. A negative effect was detected, though, on consumer acceptability, especially with the use of Cucurbita rootstocks. Cucumis F1Pat81 rootstock minimized this side effect, which was probably related to changes in the profile of sugars, acids, and volatiles. Grafting affected sugars and organic acid contents, with this effect being more accentuated with the use of Cucurbita rootstocks than with Cucumis. In fact, the latter had a higher impact on the volatile organic compound profile than on sugar and acid profile, which may have resulted in a lower effect on consumer perception. The use of Cucumis rootstocks seems to be a strategy to enable organic farming production of snake melon targeted to high-quality markets in order to promote the cultivation of this neglected crop.

    p73 is required for appropriate BMP-induced mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition during somatic cell reprogramming

    [EN] The generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by somatic cell reprogramming holds great potential for modeling human diseases. However, the reprogramming process remains very inefficient and a better understanding of its basic biology is required. The mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) has been recognized as a crucial step for the successful reprogramming of fibroblasts into iPSCs. It has been reported that the p53 tumor suppressor gene acts as a barrier of this process, while its homolog p63 acts as an enabling factor. In this regard, the information concerning the role of the third homolog, p73, during cell reprogramming is limited. Here, we derive total Trp73 knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts, with or without Trp53, and examine their reprogramming capacity. We show that p73 is required for effective reprogramming by the Yamanaka factors, even in the absence of p53. Lack of p73 affects the early stages of reprogramming, impairing the MET and resulting in altered maturation and stabilization phases. Accordingly, the obtained p73-deficient iPSCs have a defective epithelial phenotype and alterations in the expression of pluripotency markers. We demonstrate that p73 deficiency impairs the MET, at least in part, by hindering BMP pathway activation. We report that p73 is a positive modulator of the BMP circuit, enhancing its activation by DNp73 repression of the Smad6 promoter. Collectively, these findings provide mechanistic insight into the MET process, proposing p73 as an enhancer of MET during cellular reprogramming.S

    A detailed description of the integration structures for the barrel region of the silicon strips tracker of the ATLAS Phase-II upgrade for the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, the so-called High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), is presented. This paper focuses on one of the latest demonstrator prototypes recently assembled, with numerous unique features. It consists of a shortened, shield-less, and double sided stave, with two candidate power distributions implemented.
