The Iberian Peninsula presents an impressive potential richness in terms of mosasaur remains, although all of them are fragmentary axial remains or teeth crowns. However, it is important to highlight the value of these fossils when studying stratigraphy, taphonomy, taxonomy or diversity. Thanks to these mosasaur remains we can hypothesise the presence of a relevant mosasaur diversity at the end of the Cretaceous in the Iberian Peninsula with, at least, 7 different taxa. Here we can find the most southern tilosaurine record found in the northern hemisphere, and a pterygoid tooth of a Prognathodon found in the Comunidad Valenciana which widen the previously known Iberian mosasaur fossil record. It is also important to highlight the presence in the Iberian Peninsula of the richest fossil site from the Maastrichtian of south Europe in terms of fossil remains and diversity of mosasaurs: Albaina, in the Laño quarry (north Spain)

Since 1869, when the geologist Philippe Matheron described the first titanosaurian remains from the Late Cretaceous of France, until our days the knowledge about these sauropods has been greatly improved. Currently, three titanosaurian species are well-known in southwestern Europe: Lirainosaurus astibiae from the Iberian Peninsula, and Ampelosaurus atacis and Atsinganosaurus velauciensis from France. In addition, the discoveries made in several fossil-sites from Spain and France point to an even higher diversity, awaiting for the publication of the material belonging to at least one unpublished taxon.

Who are Leibniz PostDocs and what is it like to work at a Leibniz institute? Report of the first Leibniz PostDoc Survey 2020

    Get PDF
Postdoctoral researchers play a critical role in scientific research. This is the case not only for the Leibniz Association but for research worldwide. However, postdoctoral researchers are often overlooked or misrepresented as a homogeneous group of researchers. The principal aim of the Leibniz PostDoc Survey was to understand who Leibniz PostDocs are and to provide some insight into their experiences, interests, and needs. This report summarizes the results of the first Leibniz PostDoc Survey, which was open for submission from July to October 2020. The report includes a summary of the key findings and recommendations as well as a comprehensive description of all results from each survey question

BRAF V600E mutational load as a prognosis biomarker in malignant melanoma

Analyzing the mutational load of driver mutations in melanoma could provide valuable information regarding its progression. We aimed at analyzing the heterogeneity of mutational load of BRAF V600E in biopsies of melanoma patients of different stages, and investigating its potential as a prognosis factor. Mutational load of BRAF V600E was analyzed by digital PCR in 78 biopsies of melanoma patients of different stages and 10 nevi. The BRAF V600E load was compared among biopsies of different stages. Results showed a great variability in the load of V600E (0%-81%). Interestingly, we observed a significant difference in the load of V600E between the early and late melanoma stages, in the sense of an inverse correlation between BRAF V600E mutational load and melanoma progression. In addition, a machine learning approach showed that the mutational load of BRAF V600E could be a good predictor of metastasis in stage II patients. Our results suggest that BRAF V600E is a promising biomarker of prognosis in stage II patients. This research was supported by the Basque Government (grants ELKARTEK-KK2016-036 and KK2017-041 to MDB, grant IT1138-16 to SA and predoctoral fellowship PRE_2014_1_419 to AS), and by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) (grant GIU17/066). Purpose To assess the association between three different a priori dietary patterns adherence (17-item energy reduced-Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet), Trichopoulou-MedDiet and Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH)), as well as the Protein Diet Score and kidney function decline after one year of follow-up in elderly individuals with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods We prospectively analyzed 5675 participants (55-75 years) from the PREDIMED-Plus study. At baseline and at one year, we evaluated the creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and food-frequency questionnaires-derived dietary scores. Associations between four categories (decrease/maintenance and tertiles of increase) of each dietary pattern and changes in eGFR (ml/min/1.73m(2)) or >= 10% eGFR decline were assessed by fitting multivariable linear or logistic regression models, as appropriate. Results Participants in the highest tertile of increase in 17-item erMedDiet Score showed higher upward changes in eGFR (beta: 1.87 ml/min/1.73m(2); 95% CI: 1.00-2.73) and had lower odds of >= 10% eGFR decline (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.47-0.82) compared to individuals in the decrease/maintenance category, while Trichopoulou-MedDiet and DASH Scores were not associated with any renal outcomes. Those in the highest tertile of increase in Protein Diet Score had greater downward changes in eGFR (beta: - 0.87 ml/min/1.73m(2); 95% CI: - 1.73 to - 0.01) and 32% higher odds of eGFR decline (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.00-1.75). Conclusions Among elderly individuals with overweight/obesity and MetS, only higher upward change in the 17-item erMedDiet score adherence was associated with better kidney function after one year. However, increasing Protein Diet Score appeared to have an adverse impact on kidney health.
