Characterization and modelling of the hollow beam produced by a real conical lens
The properties of the hollow beam produced by a conical lens are studied in
detail. In particular, the impact of a rounded vertex is examined. It is shown
that it could lead to drastic changes in the transverse distribution of the
hollow beam, determined by the ratio between the transverse size of the
incident beam and the size of the blunt area. An adequate choice for this ratio
allows us to either minimize the losses or optimize the distribution symmetry.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Optics Communication
Management of hyperkalemia in the acutely ill patient.
PURPOSE:To review the mechanisms of action, expected efficacy and side effects of strategies to control hyperkalemia in acutely ill patients. METHODS:We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for relevant papers published in English between Jan 1, 1938, and July 1, 2018, in accordance with the PRISMA Statement using the following terms: "hyperkalemia," "intensive care," "acute kidney injury," "acute kidney failure," "hyperkalemia treatment," "renal replacement therapy," "dialysis," "sodium bicarbonate," "emergency," "acute." Reports from within the past 10 years were selected preferentially, together with highly relevant older publications. RESULTS:Hyperkalemia is a potentially life-threatening electrolyte abnormality and may cause cardiac electrophysiological disturbances in the acutely ill patient. Frequently used therapies for hyperkalemia may, however, also be associated with morbidity. Therapeutics may include the simultaneous administration of insulin and glucose (associated with frequent dysglycemic complications), β-2 agonists (associated with potential cardiac ischemia and arrhythmias), hypertonic sodium bicarbonate infusion in the acidotic patient (representing a large hypertonic sodium load) and renal replacement therapy (effective but invasive). Potassium-lowering drugs can cause rapid decrease in serum potassium level leading to cardiac hyperexcitability and rhythm disorders. CONCLUSIONS:Treatment of hyperkalemia should not only focus on the ability of specific therapies to lower serum potassium level but also on their potential side effects. Tailoring treatment to the patient condition and situation may limit the risks
The examination of a crisis between the higher clergy and the Greek Government offers the opportunity to reconsider the issue of tradition and the significance of icons in the Orthodox Church. We refer to legal documents, to ecclesiastical publications and to the Greek press. Through these sources, we focus on a controversial law regarding ecclesiastical property, in 1987-1988. We emphazise the integration–in a contentious context–of references, images and religious practices. This case study shows that in the end of xxth Century's Greece, the use of religioux symbols–combined with other methods–can contribute to a rather effective rallying and resistance strategy.
This article deals with the Orthodox Church of Greece and its complicated connections to the State, the nation, the territory. We consider the possible redefinition of these links, at the eve of the xxist century. From this point of view, it may be interesting to go back to the dramatized confrontation which opposed, in 2000-2001, the Orthodox Church of Greece to the socialist government and whose focus point was the suppression of religious affiliation on the identity cards. The resistance initiated by the Church reflects, indeed, the latter's relationship to secular power : the identity argument – or nationalist theme – consolidated, here, the refusal of any separation between the dominant Church and the State. It is, however, possible to read this mobilization first as an expression of internal ecclesiastical stakes. The subtle insertion of the “Ecumenical” Patriarcate in this conflict may buttress this reading. This sends us back to the foundation stages of the Orthodox Church of Greece, within which two main poles emerge after the first half of the xixth century : the Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Bishopric of Athens. Around these two poles, authority issues have taken shape. The recent transformation of the European space tends to stir up these issues.
Our subject of interest is the notion of indicator in the domain of analyzing the activity with a training point of view. While escaping the dualist trap, this concept allows conceiving an individual who doesn’t lay eyes on an objective reality, but observes concrete elements which are potentially significant (potential indicators or signs). This semiotic rendition is not exclusive, and must be articulated with the theoretical approaches of the field of vocational didactics (we particularly underline the articulation with constructivism). We present three categories of indicators and the inherent question of their validity. Finally, we develop a “method of indicators” through their characterization in five dimensions: relativity, subjectivity, safety, responsibility and convertibility. Each of these dimensions connects the modalities of the interpretative process to aspects of the activity that they are likely to influence (for example, if the safety of the index chain should always be suspected, in reality, it is done only for specific values of the index). We highlight these connections by examples in the field of maieutic (for example, midwifery students are reassured by the technical nature of a long index chain while experienced midwives seek to verify by a direct access the safety of an imagery or tracing)
Judging and evaluating other people's value is truly a social act, which constitutes a complex and fascinating issue for social psychologists. The aim of this article is to review, as concisely as possible, the major contributions of social psychological research to the issue of social judgement. Thus, food for thought and action are provided to the professional, primarily in the domain of education. We will first show how social psychologists warn assessors against the numerous social cognitive and social affective biases that affect their judgements of others. Then, we will suggest that even if social psychologists have mainly focused their studies upon the on gin of judgements, it is worth taking into account the target of the judgernent as well as well as the interaction between the target and the origin. ln this regard, die concept of social competence seems essential to us. It opens new ways towards a better understanding of social judgement processes in die domain of education and beyond
Enfin des implications pour la pratique seront dĂ©veloppĂ©es.Within the literature in social psychology applied to school, the notion of goals as well as their influence on academic performances are largely documented. Nevertheless, it seems that the most of the researches are focused on a cognitive dimension of goals (which consists in being Âbetter than others or in improving ones knowledge) rather than on social dimension (which consists in being accepted by others) Â(Wentzel, 2002a). In consequence, the aim of this current article is to show how social goals are important at school. More specifically, notion of social goals will be defined, their measurement will be described and their influence on performances as well as their Âdeterminants will be exposed and discussed regarded with the literature and our researches.

What kinds of communities bring people together? How are they built? Where is unity, where is the multiplicity of humanity? Men can form separate, antagonistic, violently opposing communities. Is external division necessary to build internal cohesion? Nothing is more current than these questions
The phenomenology of empowerment in collective action
Recent research has hypothesized that empowerment can arise from collective action through collective self-objectification (CSO), defined as action that actualizes participants' social identity against the power of dominant groups. Activists (N=37) described several experiences that made them feel empowered (and disempowered). Among the various explanations they offered for these feelings, the most prominent were CSO, unity, and support (or their absence). CSO was also predictive of reports of positive emotion, although unity was the best predictor of reports of further involvement. Overall, the study suggests that actualizing one's social identity through collective action has personal as well as political significance
