    Comparison of Theoretical Starburst Photoionisation Models for Optical Diagnostics

    We study and compare different examples of stellar evolutionary synthesis input parameters used to produce photoionisation model grids using the MAPPINGS V modelling code. The aim of this study is to (a) explore the systematic effects of various stellar evolutionary synthesis model parameters on the interpretation of emission lines in optical strong-line diagnostic diagrams, (b) characterise the combination of parameters able to reproduce the spread of local galaxies located in the star-forming region in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and (c) investigate the emission from extremely metal-poor galaxies using photoionisation models. We explore and compare the stellar input ionising spectrum (stellar population synthesis code [Starburst99, SLUG, BPASS], stellar evolutionary tracks, stellar atmospheres, star-formation history, sampling of the initial mass function) as well as parameters intrinsic to the H II region (metallicity, ionisation parameter, pressure, H II region boundedness). We also perform a comparison of the photoionisation codes MAPPINGS and CLOUDY. On the variations in the ionising spectrum model parameters, we find that the differences in strong emission-line ratios between varying models for a given input model parameter are small, on average ~0.1 dex. An average difference of ~0.1 dex in emission-line ratio is also found between models produced with MAPPINGS and CLOUDY. Large differences between the emission-line ratios are found when comparing intrinsic H II region parameters. We find that low-metallicity galaxies are better explained by a density-bounded H II region and higher pressures better encompass the spread of galaxies at high redshift.Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Fluorescence Spectroscopy for the Diagnosis of Endometritis in the Mare

    By exploiting the PMN property to produce high quantities of oxygen peroxide to neutralize pathogens, the oxygen peroxide content of uterine cells was measured to diagnose endometritis. After preliminary in vitro studies in which endometrial cells from slaughtered mares were mixed with leukocytes from peripheral blood, endometrial samples were collected by uterine flushing from mares before insemination. Staining endometrial cells with H2DCF-DA was combined with hydroethidine to normalize the fluorescence intensity with the cellular content of the sample. Stained cell smears were assumed as the gold standard of endometritis, and based on this assay, the samples were considered positive (C+) and negative (C-) for endometritis. The amount and the turbidity of fluid recovered by uterine flushing were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in C+ than in C-. Moreover, the oxygen peroxide content of the endometrial cells was significantly higher in the C+ than in the C- group (6.31 ± 1.92 vs. 3.12 ± 1.26, p = 0.001). Using the value of 4.4 as the cutoff level of this fluorescence cytology assay, it was found that only one C- sample exceeded the cutoff level (false positives = 7.7%) while three C+ samples showed values below the cutoff level (false negative = 11.5%)

    A review on biopolymer-based treatments for consolidation and surface protection of cultural heritage materials

    Nowadays, the scientific community emphasizes the use of reversible and non-toxic materials in the field of cultural heritage. Biopolymers are one of the alternative materials to synthetic polymers and solvents that are dangerous for human health and for the environment, applied in consolidation and coating treatment. Natural biopolymers may be divided into polysaccharide, protein, and polyester: All of them are low cost, eco-friendly, and biocompatible, besides many physicochemical characteristics such as being transparent, soluble in water, hydrogel, and film-forming, and can be easily functionalized. The addition of nanoclay, essential oil, and active molecules improves the physicochemical properties of biopolymers and proposes smart response abilities to the new composite material. This work is intended to provide an overview of the development of biopolymers by considering the most general aspects and scanning the diverse substrates of application for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage.     Estimate of average freeze-out volume in multifragmentation events

    An estimate of the average freeze-out volume for multifragmentation events is presented. Values of volumes are obtained by means of a simulation using the experimental charged product partitions measured by the 4pi multidetector INDRA for 129Xe central collisions on Sn at 32 AMeV incident energy. The input parameters of the simulation are tuned by means of the comparison between the experimental and simulated velocity (or energy) spectra of particles and fragments.Comment: To be published in Phys.     Cytotoxic activity of organotin(IV) derivatives with triazolopyrimidine containing exocyclic oxygen atoms

    In this study cytotoxicity of organotin(IV) compounds with 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines, Me3Sn(5tpO) (1), n-Bu3Sn(5tpO) (2), Me3Sn(mtpO) (3), n-Bu3Sn(mtpO) (4), n-Bu3Sn(HtpO2) (5), Ph3Sn(HtpO2) (6) where 5HtpO = 4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5-a]pyrimidine, HmtpO = 4,7-dihydro-5-methyl-7-oxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5-a]pyrimidine, and H2tpO2 = 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-5,7-dioxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5-a]-pyrimidine, was assessed on three different human tumor cell lines: HCT-116 (colorectal carcinoma), HepG2 (hepatocarcinoma) and MCF-7 (breast cancer). While 1 and 3 were inactive, compounds 2, 4, 5 and 6 inhibited the growth of the three tumor cell lines with IC50 values in the submicromolar range and showed high selectivity indexes towards the tumor cells (SI > 90). The mechanism of cell death triggered by the organotin(IV) derivatives, investigated on HCT-116 cells, was apoptotic, as evident from the externalization of phosphatidylserine to the cell surface, and occurred via the intrinsic pathway with fall of mitochondrial inner membrane potential and production of reactive oxygen species. While compound 6 arrested the cell progression in the G2/M cell cycle phase and increased p53 and p21 levels, compounds 2, 4 and 5 blocked cell duplication in the G1 phase without affecting the expression of either of the two tumor suppressor proteins. Compounds 1 and 2 were also investigated using single crystal X-ray diffraction and found to be, in both cases, coordination polymers forming 1 D chains based on metal-ligand interactions. Interestingly, for n-Bu3Sn(5tpO)(2) H-bonding interactions between 5tpO− ligands belonging to adjacent chains were also detected that resemble the “base-pairing” assembly and could be responsible for the higher biological activity compared to compound 1. In addition, they are the first example of bidentate N(3), O coordination for the 5HtpO ligand on two adjacent metal atoms

    Assessing the surface modifications following the mechanochemical preparation of a Ag/Al2O3 selective catalytic reduction catalyst

    The surface modification of a mechanochemically prepared Ag/Al2O3 catalyst compared with catalysts prepared by standard wet impregnated methods has been probed using two-dimensional T1–T2 NMR correlations, H2O temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and DRIFTS. The catalysts were examined for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx using n-octane in the presence and absence of H2. Higher activities were observed for the ball milled catalysts irrespective of whether H2 was added. This higher activity is thought to be related to the increased affinity of the catalyst surface towards the hydrocarbon relative to water, following mechanochemical preparation, resulting in higher concentrations of the hydrocarbon and lower concentrations of water at the surface. DRIFTS experiments demonstrated that surface isocyanate was formed significantly quicker and had a higher surface concentration in the case of the ball milled catalyst which has been correlated with the stronger interaction of the n-octane with the surface. This increased interaction may also be the cause of the reduced activation barrier measured for this catalyst compared with the wet impregnated system. The decreased interaction of water with the surface on ball milling is thought to reduce the effect of site blocking whilst still providing a sufficiently high surface concentration of water to enable effective hydrolysis of the isocyanate to form ammonia and, thereafter, N2

    Silicone Oil Tamponade Removal: Which Technique Is More Effective? An X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy Study

    Purpose: To compare the efficacy of two surgical techniques used to remove silicone oil (SiO) emulsion tamponade after pars plana vitrectomy: triple air–fluid exchange (AFX) and balanced salt solution lavage (BSSL). Methods: X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measured silicon content of the dry residue of fluid samples taken during AFX and BSSL. Ten patients underwent AFX and five BSSL. Three fluid samples were taken per patient, and the dry residue of 10 drops per sample were analyzed. A fluid sample from a patient who never received SiO tamponade was also analyzed to set a “blank” reference sample. Results: Patients’ demographics showed no significant difference. Sample 1 of the two groups contained comparable silicon content while samples 2 and 3 of the AFX group contained significantly more silicon than that of the BSSL group (15.0 ± 0.1 and 12.0 ± 0.9 for the AFX group vs. 10.7 ± 1.4 and 5.2 ± 0.6 for the BSSL group, respectively; P < 0.05). The cumulative amount of silicon in the three successive samples was also significantly higher for the AFX group (42.3 ± 1.6 vs. 32 ± 2; P < 0.0001). The average silicon content ratio of consecutive samples was significantly higher for the AFX group compared to the BSSL group (0.90 ± 0.01 vs. 0.58 ± 0.06; P = 0.006). Conclusions: Triple AFX removed more silicon than triple lavage. The eye wall actively interacts with silicon emulsion retaining silicon content rather than behaving as a neutral container. Translational Relevance: Triple air–fluid exchange removed more silicon than BSS lavage. Neither technique behaved as a well-mixed box dilution, suggesting the eye walls actively retain emulsion and a dynamic equilibrium is established between silicon dispersion and the eye wall surface

    Quality of Life in Patients With Severe Skin Reactions in Course of First-Generation Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors Monoclonal Antibodies (Our Experience With Cetuximab)

    Background: Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) with wild type expression of RAS and RAF genes can be treated with anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, in combination with chemotherapy. Skin toxicity represents the most serious and frequent side effect in these patients. Skin manifestations occur in approximately 80% of patients. In this study, we investigated the consequences on body image and quality of life (QoL) of patients with severe skin toxicity. Methods: One hundred patients were enrolled with mCRC. All patients signed informed consent and completed questionnaires to assess QoL and body discomfort. Toxicity was assessed on Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAEs). Results: The greatest impact on QoL was represented by difficulties in managing skin rash-related side effects. Data showed a significant impact in psychological sphere and social relationships. Conclusions: Skin side effects, particularly rash, influence QoL and social relationships, compromising therapeutic compliance

    Isotopic and Microcanonical Temperatures in Nuclear Multifragmentation

    A systematic comparison of different isotopic temperatures with the thermodynamical temperature of a multifragment system is made on the basis of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model. It is demonstrated that isotopic temperatures are strongly affected by the secondary decays of hot primary fragments and the population of particle-stable excited states in final fragments. The He-Li temperatures, measured recently by the ALADIN group, are reproduced fairly well both as a function of excitation energy and bound charge.
