Achieving Exact and Constant Turnaround Ratio in a DDS-Based Coherent Transponder
A report describes a non-standard direct digital synthesizer (DDS) implementation that can be used as part of a coherent transponder so as to allow any rational turnaround ratio to be exactly achieved and maintained while the received frequency varies. (A coherent transponder is a receiver-transmitter in which the transmitted carrier is locked to a pre-determined multiple of the received carrier's frequency and phase. That multiple is called the turnaround ratio.) The report also describes a general model for coherent transponders that are partly digital. A partially digital transponder is one in which analog signal processing is used to convert the signals between high frequencies at which they are radiated and relatively low frequencies at which they are converted to or from digital form, with most of the complex processing performed digitally. There is a variety of possible architectures for such a transponder, and different ones can be selected by choosing different parameter values in the general model. Such a transponder uses a DDS to create a low-frequency quasi-sinusoidal signal that tracks the received carrier s phase, and another DDS to generate an IF or near-baseband version of the transmitted carrier. With conventional DDS implementations, a given turnaround ratio can be achieved only approximately, and the error varies slightly as the received frequency changes. The non-conventional implementation employed here allows any rational turnaround ratio to be exactly maintained
Ecological correlation between diabetes hospitalizations and fine particulate matter in Italian provinces
Background: Exposure to particulate matter has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory
diseases. We evaluated the ecological correlation between standardized hospital discharges with diabetes in Italian
provinces and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) adjusting for common risk factors, socioeconomic factors and differences
in hospitalization appropriateness.
Methods: We used cross sectional data aggregated at the province level and available from official institutional
databases for years 2008–2010. Covariates included prevalence of adult overweight, obese, smokers, physically inactive,
education and income (as average gross domestic product per person, GDP). We reduced the number of covariates to
a smaller number of factors for the subsequent statistical model by extracting meaningful components using principal
component analysis (PCA). Log-linear multiple regression analysis was used to model diabetes hospital discharges with
PCA components and PM2.5 levels and hospitalization appropriateness for men and women.
Results: The first PCA components for both men and women were characterized by larger loadings of risk factors
(obesity, overweight, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking) and lower socioeconomic factors (educational level and
mean GDP). Diabetes hospitalization increases with the first PCA component and decreases with the index of
hospitalization appropriateness. In fully adjusted models, diabetes hospitalizations increase with increasing annual
PM2.5 concentrations, with a rise of 3.5 % (1.3 %–5.6 %) for men and of 4.0 % (1.5 %-6.4 %) for women per unit of
PM2.5 increase.
Conclusions: We found a significant ecological relationship between sex and age standardised hospital discharge with
diabetes as principle diagnosis and mean annual PM2.5 concentrations in Italian provinces, once that covariates have
been accounted for. The relationship was robust to different means of estimating PM2.5 exposure. A large portion of
the variance of diabetes hospitalizations was linked to differences of hospital care appropriateness between Italian
regions and this variable should routinely be included in ecological analyses of hospitalizations
The Detection of an Extremely Bright Fast Radio Burst in a Phased Array Feed Survey
We report the detection of an ultra-bright fast radio burst (FRB) from a modest, 3.4-day pilot survey with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. The survey was conducted in a wide-field fly's-eye configuration using the phased-array-feed technology deployed on the array to instantaneously observe an effective area of 160 deg^2, and achieve an exposure totaling 13200 deg^2 hr. We constrain the position of FRB 170107 to a region 8^'x 8^' in size (90% containment) and its fluence to be 58 ± 6 Jy ms. The spectrum of the burst shows a sharp cutoff above 1400 MHz, which could be due to either scintillation or an intrinsic feature of the burst. This confirms the existence of an ultra-bright (> 20 Jy ms) population of FRBs
Solving the Corner-Turning Problem for Large Interferometers
The so-called corner turning problem is a major bottleneck for radio
telescopes with large numbers of antennas. The problem is essentially that of
rapidly transposing a matrix that is too large to store on one single device;
in radio interferometry, it occurs because data from each antenna needs to be
routed to an array of processors that will each handle a limited portion of the
data (a frequency range, say) but requires input from each antenna. We present
a low-cost solution allowing the correlator to transpose its data in real time,
without contending for bandwidth, via a butterfly network requiring neither
additional RAM memory nor expensive general-purpose switching hardware. We
discuss possible implementations of this using FPGA, CMOS, analog logic and
optical technology, and conclude that the corner turner cost can be small even

Socio-demographic and clinical characterization of patients with obsessive-compulsive tic-related disorder (OCTD) : An Italian multicenter study
© Copyright by Pacini Editore SrlIn the DSM-5 a new "tic-related" specifier for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has been introduced, highlighting the importance of an accurate characterization of patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive tic-related disorder ("OCTD"). In order to characterize OCTD from a socio-demographic and clinical perspective, the present multicenter study was carried out. The sample consists of 266 patients, divided in two groups with lifetime diagnoses of OCD and OCTD, respectively. OCTD vs OCD patients showed a significant male prevalence (68.5% vs 48.5%; p < .001), a higher rate of psychiatric comorbidities (69.4 vs 50%; p < .001) - mainly with neurodevelopmental disorders (24 vs 0%; p < .001), a lower education level and professional status (middle school diploma: 25 vs 7.6%; full-Time job 44.4 vs 58%; p < .001). Moreover, OCTD vs OCD patients showed significantly earlier age of OCD and psychiatric comorbidity onsets (16.1 ± 10.8 vs 22.1 ± 9.5 years; p < .001, and 18.3 ± 12.8 vs 25.6 ± 9.4: p < .001, respectively). Patients with OCTD patients were treated mainly with antipsychotic and with a low rate of benzodiazepine (74.2 vs 38.2% and 20.2 vs 31.3%, respectively; p < .001). Finally, OCTD vs OCD patients showed higher rates of partial treatment response (58.1 vs 38%; p < .001), lower rates of current remission (35.5 vs 54.8%; p < .001) and higher rates of suicidal ideation (63.2 vs 41.7%; p < .001) and attempts (28.9 vs 8.3%; p < .001). Patients with OCTD report several unfavorable socio-demographic and clinical characteristics compared to OCD patients without a history of tic. Additional studies on larger sample are needed to further characterize OCTD patients from clinical and therapeutic perspectives.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

The United States military has long been considered a proving ground for masculinity and encourages servicemembers to adopt a warrior mindset of bravery and toughness at the expense of vulnerability. Such a mindset often proves troublesome for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as it dissuades them from seeking care in the form of therapy. This article argues that contemporary recommendations to attune therapy to embrace military masculinity in an attempt to make it more appealing to veterans are misguided. Ernest Hemingway’s 1925 short story “Soldier’s Home” dramatizes how an appeal to normative forms of masculinity as an entry point to post-combat healing risks a rejection of care entirely if this type of masculinity is ever questioned. The substitution of a care-receiving process by a masculinity-affirming process that he cannot accept leaves protagonist Harold Krebs with no choice but to refuse it and flee his hometown after returning from service in World War I. To demonstrate alternative possibilities, the article then examines George Saunders’s “Home” (2013) and Toni Morrison’s Home (2012) as texts that explore how interrogations of military masculinity itself can contribute to the healing process. In both texts, the protagonists realize that manhood means more than protection and violence, which engenders an acceptance of care. While neither text offers a complete resolution by its end, they both gesture towards the necessity of changing perceptions of manhood fostered by the military. The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) survey
We are developing a purely commensal survey experiment for fast (<5s)
transient radio sources. Short-timescale transients are associated with the
most energetic and brightest single events in the Universe. Our objective is to
cover the enormous volume of transients parameter space made available by
ASKAP, with an unprecedented combination of sensitivity and field of view. Fast
timescale transients open new vistas on the physics of high brightness
temperature emission, extreme states of matter and the physics of strong
gravitational fields. In addition, the detection of extragalactic objects
affords us an entirely new and extremely sensitive probe on the huge reservoir
of baryons present in the IGM. We outline here our approach to the considerable
challenge involved in detecting fast transients, particularly the development
of hardware fast enough to dedisperse and search the ASKAP data stream at or
near real-time rates. Through CRAFT, ASKAP will provide the testbed of many of
the key technologies and survey modes proposed for high time resolution science
