Interferometric tracking system for the tracking and data relay satellite
This report documents construction and testing of the Interferometric Tracking System project developed under the NASA SBIR contract NAS5-30313. Manuals describing the software and hardware, respectively entitled: 'Field Station Guide to Operations' and 'Field Station Hardware Manual' are included as part of this final report. The objective of this contract was to design, build, and operate a system of three ground stations using Very Long Baseline Interferometry techniques to measure the TDRS orbit. The ground stations receive signals from normal satellite traffic, store these signals in co-located computers, and transmit the information via phone lines to a central processing site which correlates the signals to determine relative time delays. Measurements from another satellite besides TDRS are used to determine clock offsets. A series of such measurements will ultimately be employed to derive the orbital parameters, yielding positions accurate to within 50 meters or possibly better
Equity fund raising and “creative” accounting practices : indications from Athens stock exchange for the 1999-2000 period
Management sometimes exploits the quest of shareholders for higher return
on equity capital, by taking advantage of accounting rules gaps or violating
them. The Beneish earnings detection manipulation model, is an attempt
to reveal such illegal or at least unethical practices. Evidence regarding
the use of “creative” accounting practices, based on that model, during
the massive equity fund raising in Athens Stock Exchange for the period
1999-2000, are examined. The results of Beneish model are further invigorated
towards that aim, when it is accompanied by the Return on Equity
(ROE) decomposition ratios and Altman’s Z score of bankruptcy prediction.

Sensitization of renal carcinoma cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis by rocaglamide and analogs
Rocaglamide has been reported to sensitize several cell types to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. In recent years, advances in synthetic techniques have led to generation of novel rocaglamide analogs. However, these have not been extensively analyzed as TRAIL sensitizers, particularly in TRAIL-resistant renal cell carcinoma cells. Evaluation of rocaglamide and analogs identified 29 compounds that are able to sensitize TRAIL-resistant ACHN cells to TRAIL-induced, caspase-dependent apoptosis with sub-µM potency which correlated with their potency as protein synthesis inhibitors and with loss of cFLIP protein in the same cells. Rocaglamide alone induced cell cycle arrest, but not apoptosis. Rocaglates averaged 4–5-fold higher potency as TRAIL sensitizers than as protein synthesis inhibitors suggesting a potential window for maximizing TRAIL sensitization while minimizing effects of general protein synthesis inhibition. A wide range of other rocaglate effects (e.g. on JNK or RAF-MEK-ERK signaling, death receptor levels, ROS, ER stress, eIF4E phosphorylation) were assessed, but did not contribute to TRAIL sensitization. Other than a rapid loss of MCL-1, rocaglates had minimal effects on mitochondrial apoptotic pathway proteins. The identification of structurally diverse/mechanistically similar TRAIL sensitizing rocaglates provides insights into both rocaglate structure and function and potential further development for use in RCC-directed combination therapy.This project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, under Contract No. HHSN261200800001E. Miniature Piezoelectric Shaker for Distribution of Unconsolidated Samples to Instrument Cells
The planned Mars Science Laboratory mission requires inlet funnels for channeling unconsolidated powdered samples from the sampling and sieving mechanisms into instrument test cells, which are required to reduce cross-contamination of the samples and to minimize residue left in the funnels after each sample transport. To these ends, a solid-state shaking mechanism has been created that requires low power and is lightweight, but is sturdy enough to survive launch vibration. The funnel mechanism is driven by asymmetrically mounted, piezoelectric flexure actuators that are out of the load path so that they do not support the funnel mass. Each actuator is a titanium, flextensional piezoelectric device driven by a piezoelectric stack. The stack has Invar endcaps with a half-spherical recess. The Invar is used to counteract the change in stress as the actuators are cooled to Mars ambient temperatures. A ball screw is threaded through the actuator frame into the recess to apply pre-stress, and to trap the piezoelectric stack and endcaps in flexure. During the vibration cycle of the flextensional actuator frame, the compression in the piezoelectric stack may decrease to the point that it is unstressed; however, because the ball joint cannot pull, tension in the piezoelectric stack cannot be produced. The actuators are offset at 120 . In this flight design, redundancy is required, so three actuators are used though only one is needed to assist in the movement. The funnel is supported at three contact points offset to the hexapod support contacts. The actuator surface that does not contact the ring is free to expand. Two other configurations can be used to mechanically tune the vibration. The free end can be designed to drive a fixed mass, or can be used to drive a free mass to excite impacts (see figure). Tests on this funnel mechanism show a high density of resonance modes between 1 and 20 kHz. A subset of these between 9 and 12 kHz was used to drive the CheMin actuators at 7 V peak to peak. These actuators could be driven by a single resonance, or swept through a frequency range to decrease the possibility that a portion of the funnel surface was not coincident with a nodal line (line of no displacement). The frequency of actuation can be electrically controlled and monitored and can also be mechanically tuned by the addition of tuning mass on the free end of the actuator. The devices are solid-state and can be designed with no macroscopically moving parts. This design has been tested in a vacuum at both Mars and Earth ambient temperatures ranging from 30 to 25

On Conformal Infinity and Compactifications of the Minkowski Space
Using the standard Cayley transform and elementary tools it is reiterated
that the conformal compactification of the Minkowski space involves not only
the "cone at infinity" but also the 2-sphere that is at the base of this cone.
We represent this 2-sphere by two additionally marked points on the Penrose
diagram for the compactified Minkowski space. Lacks and omissions in the
existing literature are described, Penrose diagrams are derived for both,
simple compactification and its double covering space, which is discussed in
some detail using both the U(2) approach and the exterior and Clifford algebra
methods. Using the Hodge * operator twistors (i.e. vectors of the
pseudo-Hermitian space H_{2,2}) are realized as spinors (i.e., vectors of a
faithful irreducible representation of the even Clifford algebra) for the
conformal group SO(4,2)/Z_2. Killing vector fields corresponding to the left
action of U(2) on itself are explicitly calculated. Isotropic cones and
corresponding projective quadrics in H_{p,q} are also discussed. Applications
to flat conformal structures, including the normal Cartan connection and

Crystal polymorphism of methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-1-O-(trichloroacetimidoyl)-α-d-glucopyranouronate
The polymorphism of the glycoside donor methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-1-O-(trichloroacetimidoyl)-α-d-glucopyranouronate (1) has been investigated. Two polymorphic forms (labelled Forms I and II) have been elucidated and fully characterised by DSC, PXRD and single crystal analysis, both crystallizing in the space group P21. Form I was obtained by crystallization from a wide range of solvents, while Form II was obtained only from ethyl acetate or isopropanol on certain occasions. Unit cell dimensions for Form I are a 14.0292(12), b 8.9641(8), c 16.8580(14) Å, β 94.285(2)°, and for Form II a 11.266(3), b 6.8889(17), c 13.921(4) Å, β 101.161(6)°. Z’ is 2 for Form I and 1 for Form II. Form I displays two moderate intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the unit cell whereas Form II shows no moderate hydrogen-bonding motifs. All three molecules in the two polymorphs differ significantly in their conformations, especially with respect to the methyl carboxylate and trichloroacetimidoyl group
Exploring the costs and outcomes of sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening interventions targeting men in football club settings: preliminary cost-consequence analysis of the SPORTSMART pilot randomised controlled trial
Background:
The objective of this study was to compare the costs and outcomes of two sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening interventions targeted at men in football club settings in England, including screening promoted by team captains.
Methods:
A comparison of costs and outcomes was undertaken alongside a pilot cluster randomised control trial involving three trial arms: (1) captain-led and poster STI screening promotion; (2) sexual health advisor-led and poster STI screening promotion and (3) poster-only STI screening promotion (control/comparator). For all study arms, resource use and cost data were collected prospectively.
Results:
There was considerable variation in uptake rates between clubs, but results were broadly comparable across study arms with 50% of men accepting the screening offer in the captain-led arm, 67% in the sexual health advisor-led arm and 61% in the poster-only control arm. The overall costs associated with the intervention arms were similar. The average cost per player tested was comparable, with the average cost per player tested for the captain-led promotion estimated to be £88.99 compared with £88.33 for the sexual health advisor-led promotion and £81.87 for the poster-only (control) arm.
Conclusions:
Costs and outcomes were similar across intervention arms. The target sample size was not achieved, and we found a greater than anticipated variability between clubs in the acceptability of screening, which limited our ability to estimate acceptability for intervention arms. Further evidence is needed about the public health benefits associated with screening interventions in non-clinical settings so that their cost-effectiveness can be fully evaluated
