The WPS strategy, which was first established in 2000 by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, aims to address the impact of conflict on women and to ensure their meaningful participation in peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes. The strategy recognizes that peace and security cannot be achieved without the full and equal participation of women. By integrating WPS into PME curriculum (first pillar of the strategy), students in joint military PME institutions are provided with a comprehensive understanding of the role of women in conflict and peacebuilding, as well as the importance of their involvement in these processes.    The integration of WPS into PME curriculum has numerous benefits for students in the security sector and for meeting the strategy goals of the WPS strategy. By promoting gender equality and highlighting the importance of women\u27s participation in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, PME programs can contribute to a more inclusive and effective security sector and help to achieve the goal of a safer and more secure world through educating mid-grade officers and civilians who will likely be involved in these operations.https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/wps/1007/thumbnail.jp

THE LIVING WAGE AS A MEANS TO ADDRESS SOCIAL INEQUALITY

The living wage is a call to private and public sector employers to pay wages to both direct and contract employees sufficient to provide the basics to individuals. This wage reflects the belief that every individual has the right to enjoy good health, recreation, culture and entertainment, to raise children, and to fully partake in social and civic activities, as opposed to minimally surviving. This movement is growing across Canada and the world. Broadly, the case discusses social inequality, and more narrowly, it examines the Living Wage in Canada, then Ontario, then within one Ontario city, Windsor. The case describes a real world situation where a manager at a local credit union must make a decision on whether to raise the pay of lower level employees to be consistent with a Living Wage. In making their decision, students will need to balance corporate values at the credit union as it seeks to be a social leader in their community with the need for profits, and whether paying a Living Wage will boost revenue to offset the extra cost in wages. Further, while the initial increase in cost is restricted to the 5% of employees earning less than the Living Wage, an increase in pay at the bottom of the scale may necessitate an increase for the other employees as well

Infectious Inequalities; Epidemics, Trust, and Social Vulnerabilities in Cinema

This book explores societal vulnerabilities highlighted within cinema and develops an interpretive framework for understanding the depiction of societal responses to epidemic disease outbreaks across cinematic history.Drawing on a large database of twentieth- and twenty-first-century films depicting epidemics, the study looks into issues including trust, distrust, and mistrust; different epidemic experiences down the lines of expertise, gender, and wealth; and the difficulties in visualizing the invisible pathogen on screen. The authors argue that epidemics have long been presented in cinema as forming a point of cohesion for the communities portrayed, as individuals and groups “from below” represented as characters in these films find solidarity in battling a common enemy of elite institutions and authority figures. Throughout the book, a central question is also posed: “cohesion for whom?”, which sheds light on the fortunes of those characters that are excluded from these expressions of collective solidarity. This book is a valuable reference for scholars and students of film studies and visual studies as well as academic and general readers interested in topics of films and history, and disease and society

Teach Me or Lie to Me

Your nose does not grow when you lie, thankfully. However, there are a number of indicators of deception (Vrij, 2008). People who held more accurate beliefs about these indicators of deception were better lie detectors (Forrest, Feldman, & Tyler, 2004). Yet, people tend to not be very accurate lie detectors and hold a number of false beliefs (Bond & DePaulo, 2006; Global Deception Research Team). Recently, a study has found that the implementation of a workshop has been effective for increasing accurate beliefs about indicators of deception and reducing negative attitudes toward deception for physical therapy students (Curtis, Huang, & Nicks, 2015).The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of an educational workshop for enhancing correct beliefs and reducing negative attitudes

Percutaneous Transluminal Balloon Venoplasty: A Less Invasive Technique for Implantation of Cardiac Leads in Patients with Limited Venous Access to the heart

Since its inception, cardiac pacing has made a significant advancement in cardiology. As new therapies and devices emerge, the number of implantations is steadily increasing which requires up-to-date clinical guidelines for management. Although advanced, these mechanical devices often require maintenance and revisions to achieve optimal performance. One of the most common deteriorations is the lead failure. In the case of lead failure requiring revision, new lead implant, or upgrading to a more advanced pacing system, venous stenosis resulting in partial or complete obstruction of the vessel can pose a real problem. This case series report introduces the technique of percutaneous transluminal balloon venoplasty in the setting of venous stenosis as an alternative to more invasive procedures such as lead extraction for lead revision or device upgrade
