    The effect of institutional distance on cross-border merger and acquisition time to completion: an empirical analysis of European Union deals

    Cross-border merger and acquisitions (CBM&As) have extensively been used as a favorite entry mode in foreign markets, rapidly providing resources, competencies and local intelligence without risk of facing the liability of foreignness, or the burden of starting a greenfield investment. Studies indicate that greater institutional distance increases the costs of doing business in a foreign country, because it is associated with greater uncertainty and non-familiarity with the local environment. Besides that, prolonged duration of the M&A process has negative consequences for target and acquirer firms and bear significant costs for both parties. However, until so far, the studies regarding the effect of institutional distances on time to completion of a CBM&A deal are scarce. My theoretical model speculates on the effect of institutional distances (Political, Economic, Administrative and Cultural) in CBM&As time to completion. I further propose that European Union membership, of both target and acquirer countries, moderates the effect of institutional distances on CBM&As time to completion. The hypotheses are tested using a sample of 2,110 CBM&A deals that occurred during 2011 in European Union. On one hand, the results suggest that Political and Cultural distance have a positive effect on the time hiatus between announcement and completion of a CBM&A deal. On the other hand, the results suggest that European Union membership does moderate the effect of Economic and Administrative distance in CBM&A time to completion

    Against strong pluralism

    Strong pluralists hold that not even permanent material coincidence is enough for identity. Strong pluralism entails the possibility of purely material objects -- even if not coincident -- alike in all general respects, categorial and dispositional, relational and non-relational, past, present and future, at the microphysical level, but differing in some general modal, counterfactual or dispositional repscts at the macrophysical level. It is objectionable because it thus deprives us of the explanatory resources to explain why evident absurdities are absurd. A second objection is to the suggestion that cases involving artefacts can illustrate strong pluralism. This offends against the principle that gien a complex intrinsic microphysical property instantiated in some regiion, the number of material things possessing it in that region cannot depend on the existence and nature of intentional activity taking place outside it

    Personalised service? Changing the role of the government librarian

    Investigates the feasibility of personalised information service in a government department. A qualitative methodology explored stakeholder opinions on the remit, marketing, resourcing and measurement of the service. A questionnaire and interviews gathered experiences of personalised provision across the government sector. Potential users were similarly surveyed to discuss how the service could meet their needs. Data were analysed using coding techniques to identify emerging theory. Lessons learned from government librarians centred on clarifying requirements, balancing workloads and selective marketing. The user survey showed low usage and awareness of existing specialist services, but high levels of need and interest in services repackaged as a tailored offering. Fieldwork confirmed findings from the literature on the scope for adding value through information management advice, information skills training and substantive research assistance and the need to understand business processes and develop effective partnerships. Concluding recommendations focus on service definition, strategic marketing, resource utilisation and performance measurement

    A fresh look at the evolution and diversification of photochemical reaction centers

    In this review, I reexamine the origin and diversification of photochemical reaction centers based on the known phylogenetic relations of the core subunits, and with the aid of sequence and structural alignments. I show, for example, that the protein folds at the C-terminus of the D1 and D2 subunits of Photosystem II, which are essential for the coordination of the water-oxidizing complex, were already in place in the most ancestral Type II reaction center subunit. I then evaluate the evolution of reaction centers in the context of the rise and expansion of the different groups of bacteria based on recent large-scale phylogenetic analyses. I find that the Heliobacteriaceae family of Firmicutes appears to be the earliest branching of the known groups of phototrophic bacteria; however, the origin of photochemical reaction centers and chlorophyll synthesis cannot be placed in this group. Moreover, it becomes evident that the Acidobacteria and the Proteobacteria shared a more recent common phototrophic ancestor, and this is also likely for the Chloroflexi and the Cyanobacteria. Finally, I argue that the discrepancies among the phylogenies of the reaction center proteins, chlorophyll synthesis enzymes, and the species tree of bacteria are best explained if both types of photochemical reaction centers evolved before the diversification of the known phyla of phototrophic bacteria.     Phenotypic characterization of breast cancer: the role of CDC42

    Purpose: The molecular landscape of breast cancer (BC), especially of the Luminal A subtype, remains to be fully delineated. Transcriptomic data shows that Luminal A tumours are enriched for aberrant expression of genes in the cell division control 42 homolog (CDC42) pathway. This study aims to investigate protein expression of CDC42 in BC and assess its clinicopathological significance. Methods: Expression of CDC42 protein was examined by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays in a well characterised cohort of 895 early stage (I-IIIa) primary invasive BCs. Results: CDC42 expression was observed in both the cytoplasm and nucleus of BC cells. High nuclear CDC42 expression demonstrated a significant correlation with ER positive, low-grade tumours and was more common in the lobular histological subtype (all p<0.001). In contrast, cytoplasmic CDC42 showed increased expression in the ductal subtype (p<0.001) and correlated with negative prognostic features such as larger size, higher grade (p<0.05), and higher Ki67 labelling index (p=0.001). Nuclear CDC42 expression was associated with a longer BC specific survival in all cases (p=0.025) and in luminal ER positive tumours (p=0.011). In multivariate analyses including size, grade, lymph node stage and intrinsic subtype, CDC42 was an independent prognostic factor (p=0.032). Conclusion: The results indicate that CDC42 is important molecule in luminal BC, with prognostic significance

    A Lamb-wave-based technique for damage detection in composite laminates

    This paper presents the application of Lamb waves to inspect damage in composite laminates. The proposed methodology employs a network of transducers that are used to sequentially scan the structure before and after the presence of damage by transmitting and receiving Lamb wave pulses. A damage localization image is reconstructed by analyzing the cross-correlation of the scatter signal envelope with the excitation pulse envelope for each transducer pair. A potential damage area is then reconstructed by superimposing the image observed from each actuator and sensor signal path. Both numerical and experimental case studies are used to verify the proposed methodology for composite laminates. Three-dimensional finite element models with a transducer network consisting of four transducer elements are used in the numerical case studies. The experimental case studies employ a transducer network using four piezoelectric transducers as transmitter elements and a laser vibrometer to measure the response signals at four locations close to the transducers. The results show that the method enables the reliable detection of structural damage with locating inaccuracies of the order of a few millimeters inside as well as outside of an inspection area of 100 x 100 mm².C T Ng and M Veid

    The Marine Viromes of Four Oceanic Regions

    Viruses are the most common biological entities in the marine environment. There has not been a global survey of these viruses, and consequently, it is not known what types of viruses are in Earth's oceans or how they are distributed. Metagenomic analyses of 184 viral assemblages collected over a decade and representing 68 sites in four major oceanic regions showed that most of the viral sequences were not similar to those in the current databases. There was a distinct “marine-ness” quality to the viral assemblages. Global diversity was very high, presumably several hundred thousand of species, and regional richness varied on a North-South latitudinal gradient. The marine regions had different assemblages of viruses. Cyanophages and a newly discovered clade of single-stranded DNA phages dominated the Sargasso Sea sample, whereas prophage-like sequences were most common in the Arctic. However most viral species were found to be widespread. With a majority of shared species between oceanic regions, most of the differences between viral assemblages seemed to be explained by variation in the occurrence of the most common viral species and not by exclusion of different viral genomes. These results support the idea that viruses are widely dispersed and that local environmental conditions enrich for certain viral types through selective pressure

    Localisation of somatostatin and somatostatin receptors in benign and malignant ovarian tumours

    Somatostatin has been identified as having anti-proliferative, anti-angiogenic and pro-apoptotic actions in many tumour systems, and these effects are mediated through a family of five transmembrane G-protein coupled SRIF receptors. Ovarian cancer is the commonest gynaecological malignancy in the UK and maintenance therapy is urgently required. Native somatostatin expression and its receptors sst1,2,3 and 5 were studied with immunohistochemistry in 63 malignant and 35 benign ovarian tumours of various histological types. Fifty-seven out of 63 (90%) of malignant and 26/35 (74%) benign tumours expressed somatostatin. Receptors sst1,2,3 and 5 were expressed variably in epithelial, vascular and stromal compartments for both benign and malignant tumours. Somatostatin was found to correlate significantly with stromal sst1 (P=0.008), epithelial sst1 (P<0.001), stromal sst2 (P=0.019), vascular sst2 (P=0.026), epithelial sst3 (P=0.026), stromal sst5 (P=0.013) and vascular sst5 (P=0.038). Increased expression of native somatostatin correlating with somatostatin receptors in malignant ovarian tumours raises the possibility that either synthetic somatostatin antagonists or receptor agonists may have therapeutic potential
