Monte Carlo simulation of binary mixtures of hard colloidal cuboids

We perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the phase behaviour of colloidal suspensions of hard board-like particles (HBPs). While theories restricting particle orientation or ignoring higher ordered phases suggest the existence of a stable biaxial nematic phase, our recent simulation results on monodisperse systems indicate that this is not necessarily the case, even for particle shapes exactly in between prolate and oblate geometries, usually referred to as self-dual shape. Motivated by the potentially striking impact of incorporating biaxial ordering into display applications, we extend our investigation to bidisperse mixtures of short and long HBPs and analyse whether size dispersity can further enrich the phase behaviour of HBPs, eventually destabilise positionally ordered phases and thus favour the formation of the biaxial nematic phase. Not only do our results indicate that bidisperse mixtures of self-dual shaped HBPs cannot self-assemble into biaxial nematic phases, but they also show that these particles are not able to form uniaxial nematic phases either. This surprising behaviour is also observed in monodisperse systems. Additionally, bidisperse HBPs tend to phase separate in coexisting isotropic and smectic phases or, at relatively large pressures, in a smectic phase of mostly short HBPs and a smectic phase of mostly long HBPs. We conclude that limiting the particle orientational degrees of freedom or neglecting the presence of positionally ordered (smectic, columnar and crystal) phases can dramatically alter the phase behaviour of HBPs and unrealistically enlarge the region of stability of the biaxial nematic phase.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

The contrastive value of lexical stress in visual word recognition: Evidence from spanish

Resumen tomado de la publicaciónEl valor contrastivo del acento léxico en el reconocimiento visual de palabras: evidencia del español. Antecedentes: muchos pares de palabras en español, en particular muchas formas verbales, difieren solo en la sílaba acentuada, tal como aNImo y aniMÓ. Así el acento puede adquirir un valor contrastivo que fue confirmado por Dupoux, Pallier, Sebastian y Mehler (1997) en español, pero no en francés, en percepción auditiva. Método: este estudio contrasta el efecto de primado en pares de palabras que difieren en su patrón de acentuación con el efecto de repetición, el primado solo de acento (sin relación ortográfica) y el primado morfológico en reconocimiento visual de palabras. Resultados: usando priming enmascarado se obtuvo facilitación para los pares con diferente acento (rasGÓ/RASgo) comparando con los pares sin relación (dorMÍ/RASgo), pero no se produjo comparando con los no relacionados de igual acento (PERsa/RASgo). Sin embargo, los pares idénticos (RASgo-RASgo) produjeron facilitación comparando con ambas condiciones ortográficamente relacionadas. Con un SOA largo los pares con diferente acento (ortográficamente iguales) produjeron una facilitación significativa, como ocurrió con los pares relacionados morfológicos (RASga/RASgo), sobre los pares ortográficamente diferentes (PERsa/RASgo). Conclusión: estos resultados confirman la importancia del procesamiento temprano y preléxico del acento para la selección léxica en español, como ocurre con las características ortográficas y fonológicas de las palabras.Universidad de Oviedo. Neurociencia Cognitiva en la evaluación de la dislexia en niños y adultos

Conferencia de carácter docenteLa Neurociencia Cognitiva es una disciplina reciente que estudia los mecanismos neuronales responsables del funcionamiento de la mente. Y la lectura es una de las actividades cognitivas más estudiadas, posiblemente porque aún no está programada en nuestro genoma y por ello es relativamente fácil comparar los cerebros de personas analfabetas con el de personas alfabetizadas. Pero sobre todo, porque permite conocer las alteraciones de las personas que sufren dislexia, un trastorno que afecta a un porcentaje de alrededor del 5% de la población. En esta conferencia se exponen las características neurológicas y cognitivas de los niños y adultos disléxicos y se analizan las causas que dificultan su aprendizaje de la lectoescritura. Se subrayan los déficits en el procesamiento fonológico der estas personas y su lentitud en el procesamiento verbal. Se presentan algunos estudios de neuroimagen y conductuales que muestran esos déficits. A continuación se presentan las líneas de lo que debe constituir una buena evaluación de todos los procesos relacionados con el aprendizaje de la lectura (conciencia fonológica, memoria a corto plazo, atención, etc.) y especialmente de los propios procesos de la lectura (vía léxica, vía subléxica, procesamiento sintáctico, etc.) a través de los tests Prolec-R y Prolec-Se. Se enumeran los criterios principales que hay que tener en cuenta para considerar un niño disléxico y se sugieren algunas actividades para la intervención. Se insiste en la necesidad del diagnóstico precoz de la dislexia y la manera de detectar a una edad temprana a los niños con riesgo de padecer dislexia.Universidad de Málaga. Wear prevention characteristics of binary oil mixtures

This work presents the results of wear prevention tests carried out with mixtures of a polyalphaolefin (PAO 6) and two esters (TMP-05 and Sunflower oil, SO), on a four-ball machine tester. Results show that esters are excellent wear reducers when they are mixed with a low viscosity polyalphaolefin. The optimum ester percentages in PAO 6 were 5% and 15% for TMP-05 and SO, respectively. Better results than in pure PAO 6 occurred in all mixtures. The addition of esters (less than 15%) to PAO 6 hardly changed volume viscosity

La atención a las personas con esquizofrenia y otros trastornos mentales graves desde los servicios públicos: una atención integral e integrada en un modelo comunitario

La atención a las personas que padecen esquizofrenia y otros trastornos mentales graves sigue siendo un objetivo prioritario para los servicios públicos de salud mental, toda vez que constituyen el grupo de personas con enfermedad mental mas vulnerable, expuesto a los riesgos del desarraigo y la marginalidad; y que requieren redes de servicios sanitarios y sociales bien coordinadas, profesionales bien formados y comprometidos, además de la implementación de programas de intervención probadamente eficaces. El artículo presenta las características básicas de la atención a personas con esquizofrenia en sistemas comunitarios, teniendo en cuenta tanto las referencias internacionales como la experiencia desarrollada en Andalucía en los últimos veinte años.The care of people with schizophrenia and other severe mental disorders remains an important aim for public mental health services, because this group are one of the most unprotected between of persons with mental illness, due to their risk of uprooting and marginality. They need well coordinated networks of health and social services, and trained and involved professionals, and the implementation of effective interventions. The paper present the basic issues from the care of people with schizophrenia in community mental health systems, included internationals references and the experience developed in Andalusia in the last twenty years

Some aspects of oil lubricant additivation with ZnO nanoparticles

This is a study on the tribological behaviour of ZnO nanoparticles as an additive in a polyalphaolefin (PAO6) and on the influence of dispersing agents (OL100 and OL300). Antiwear and extreme pressure tests were run on two four-ball machines. Firstly, it was demonstrated that OL300 has better dispersant properties than OL100, and also was found formation of aggregates for 1 and 1.5% of ZnO in PAO6 + 3% OL300 suspension. Ensuing SEM and EDS analysis of the worn surface highlighted a number of conclusions: OL100 and OL300 are potentially useful as wear reducer additives in PAO6, the non-coated ZnO nanoparticles had an abrasive behaviour, and ZnO nanoparticles do not act as anti-wear agent under certain conditions but in EP conditions they can decrease wear

The hórreos in Riaño Mountain, León, Spain. Vernacular architecture between conservation and musealisation

[EN] Hórreos, aerial or raised barns, constitute a very singular typology of vernacular architecture. The guardianship of Spanish hórreos began with their recognition as personal properties in 1926. In 1973, all the hórreos and paneras in Asturias and Galicia were placed under state pro-tection. Later, the autonomous laws included its preservation. In 1984 an order that protected the Leonese hórreos was approved. However, this legislative protection was useless when the Remolina reservoir, which flooded several towns in the region of Riaño Mountain – León, Spain – was built in 1985.The value of traditional architecture and the hórreos in the villages of the Riaño Mountain was claimed by architects such as Leopoldo Torres Balbás or Manuel Cárdenas. The disappearance of many of them has meant an irreparable loss of a unique type of vernacular architecture. When it came to deciding which elements should be saved from the destruction caused by the reservoir, vernacular architecture was neglected. One of the hórreos was dismantled and remounted in Nuevo Riaño, the new settlement built to replace the disappeared village. Isolated from its con-text, it became a museum element, perceived as a cultural relic.At the beginning of the 20th century, the council of Riaño became aware of how valuable these elements are and proposed the recovery of the constructive techniques and traditions related to Leonese hórreos. In 2014 a new one was built and placed in Nuevo Riaño square. Surrounded by buildings that have nothing to do with the vernacular architecture in the territory and decon-textualised, it is perceived as something beyond to the present days. Today, 142 hórreos are preserved in Riaño Mountain and they must be kept as something more than cultural relics and, additionally, the constructive traditions linked to them must be preserved.García Cuetos, M.
