    A Quantitative Exploration of the Golden Age of European Growth

    Income per capita in some Western European countries more than tripled in the two and a half decades that followed World War II. The literature has identified several factors behind this outstanding growth episode, specifically; structural change associated with large migrations from agriculture to nonagricultural sectors, the Marshall Plan combined with the public provision of infrastructure, the surge of intra-European trade, and the reconstruction process that followed the devastation of the war. This paper is an attempt to formalize and quantify the direct contribution of each one of these factors to growth during the European Golden Age. Our results highlight the importance of reconstruction growth and structural change, and point to the limited role of the Marshall Plan, and the late contribution of intra-European trade.Economic Growth, European Economic History 1913-, Computable General Equilibrium Models.

    A first principles study of thiol-capped Au nanoparticles: Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties as a function of thiol coverage

    We have studied the stability of thiolated Au38 nanoparticles (NPs) via density functional theory based calculations varying the coverage from 0 up to 32 molecules. Three different initial core arrangements were considered for the cluster, spherical, tubular, and bi-icosahedral, while thiol groups were attached to the cluster via the sulfur atom either as single molecules or forming more complex staple motifs. After molecular dynamics runs several metastable configurations are found at each coverage thus allowing to analyze the properties of the NPs in the form of ensemble averages. In particular, we address the structural and electronic properties as a function of the number of thiols. The study emphasizes the strong influence of the core structure on the stability of the NPs, and its interplay with the thiol coverage and adsorption geometries. The magnetic properties of the NPs have also been explored via spin-polarized calculations including spin-orbit coupling.     Coinfection in a stochastic model for bacteriophage systems

    A system modeling bacteriophage treatments with coinfections in a noisy context is analysed. We prove that in a small noise regime, the system converges in the long term to a bacteria-free equilibrium. Moreover, we compare the treatment with coinfection with the treatment without coinfection, showing how coinfection affects the convergence to the bacteria-free equilibrium

    Inflammation in Parkinson's disease: Mechanisms and therapeutic implications

    Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by the death of dopaminergic neurons that project from the substantia nigra pars compacta. Although the molecular bases for PD development are still little defined, extensive evidence from human samples and animal models support the involvement of inflammation in onset or progression. However, the exact trigger for this response remains unclear. Here, we provide a systematic review of the cellular mediators, i.e., microglia, astroglia and endothelial cells. We also discuss the genetic and transcriptional control of inflammation in PD and the immunomodulatory role of dopamine and reactive oxygen species.     Regulation of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase expression via the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/Akt pathway and nuclear factor-ÎşB

    11 pages, 9 figures.Aerobic cells adjust the expression of antioxidant enzymes to maintain reactive oxygen species within tolerable levels. In addition, phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) and its downstream protein kinase effector Akt adapt cells to survive in the presence of oxidative stress. Here we provide evidence for an association between these two defense systems via transcriptional regulation of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD). PC12 pheochromocytoma cells expressing active Akt1 exhibit lower ROS levels in response to hydrogen peroxide, as determined with the superoxide-sensitive probe hydroethidine. Transfection of constitutive or 4-hydroxytamoxifen-inducible versions of Akt1 results in higher messenger RNA and protein levels of Cu/Zn-SOD. Luciferase reporter constructs, carrying different length fragments of the human sod1 gene promoter, have identified a region between -552 and -355 that is targeted by PI3K and Akt and that contains a putative site of regulation by nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB). Nerve growth factor (NGF) and Akt augment the transactivating activity and produce higher nuclear levels of p65-NF-kappaB. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays indicate that the putative NF-kappaB regulatory sequence binds p65-NF-kappaB more efficiently in nuclear extracts from these cells. A dominant-negative mutant of IkappaBalpha further demonstrates that the PI3K/Akt axis targets the sod1 promoter at the level of the newly characterized NF-kappaB site. These results illustrate a new mechanism by which the PI3K/Akt pathway protects cells against oxidative stress, involving the upregulation of Cu/Zn-SOD gene expression, and the results identify NF-kappaB as a key mediator in the regulation of this gene.This work was supported by Grants SAF2001-0545 from Ministry of Science and Technology and 08.5/0048/2001 from Comunidad AutĂłnoma of Madrid.Peer reviewe
