An Experience in Mentoring: Shaping Young Mathematical Minds

The Math PLUS program is a partnership between Linfield College and a local middle school which seeks to encourage more mathematics in local and regional science fairs. Linfield students are paired with middle school students to mentor science fair projects that are required to have a mathematical focus. We briefly discuss an overview of the program—its goals, structure and execution—before touching on our personal experiences as mentors for Yamhill-Carlton Intermediate School students. We also provide suggestions for improvements for those looking to implement similar programs at their own institution. The program is funded by a Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant

Minimum Action Path theory reveals the details of stochastic biochemical transitions out of oscillatory cellular states

Cell state determination is the outcome of intrinsically stochastic biochemical reactions. Tran- sitions between such states are studied as noise-driven escape problems in the chemical species space. Escape can occur via multiple possible multidimensional paths, with probabilities depending non-locally on the noise. Here we characterize the escape from an oscillatory biochemical state by minimizing the Freidlin-Wentzell action, deriving from it the stochastic spiral exit path from the limit cycle. We also use the minimized action to infer the escape time probability density function

Fondos Revolventes Comunitarios impulsados por ADDAC como alternativa socio-económica para el Desarrollo Comunitario y el Desarrollo a Escala Humana en las comunidades Achiote Central, Municipio Racho Grande y El Arado, Municipio El Tuma-La Dalia, 2013

ADDAC como institución impulsora de los Fondos Revolventes Comunitarios (FRCs) en las zonas rurales del norte de Nicaragua, los promueve en las comunidades Achiote Central Municipio Rancho Grande y El Arado Municipio Tuma-La Dalia. A partir de la problemática surge la idea de analizar la influencia de los FRCs en el Desarrollo Comunitario y Desarrollo a Escala Humana en las comunidades Achiote Central y El Arado. Se midieron las variables Microfinanzas y Desarrollo utilizando una serie de indicadores en base a la teoría citada. Se utilizó tipo de investigación descriptiva, comparativa y de corte transversal; método empírico y teórico; el enfoque cualitativo; y como técnicas las entrevistas grupales. De acuerdo a los asociados el Desarrollo Comunitario ha sido más destacado en Achiote Central debido a que entre los/as socios/as las relaciones y beneficios comunitarios, y la participación se presenta con bastante intensidad, sin embargo ambos FRCs muestran buena organización, valores y principios adquiridos. El FRC ha tenido una influencia muy considerable en el Desarrollo a Escala Humana de los asociados de Achiote Central en relación al de El Arado, porque han mejorado su autoestima, tienen más apoyo del FRC para la salud; en ambas comunidades el FRC ha contribuido a que los/as socios/as posean afecto e identidad como también garantizar la subsistencia. ADDAC debe seguir proporcionando financiamiento a través de los FRCs ya que ha sido positivo para las comunidades; en ambos FRCs debería existir motivación a la junta directiva, asimismo a los/as socios/as para la puntualidad en las asamblea

La excepcion de oscuridad o ambigüedad en el modo de proponer la demanda y la vulneracion del derecho de defensa del demandado en el proceso civil

Nuestro tema de estudio se centra en la excepción de oscuridad o ambigüedad en el modo de proponer la demanda, incidiendo en que su actual regulación vulnera frontalmente el derecho de defensa del demandado. Durante el desarrollo de la presente investigación, hemos determinado que el demandado se encuentra en un estado de indefensión y de desventaja frente al demandante cuando este último ha presentado una demanda oscura o ambigua y el primero deduce una excepción de oscuridad o ambigüedad en el modo de proponer la demanda, por ello y a efectos de sintetizar nuestra problemática, hemos elaborado el siguiente enunciado: ¿De qué manera el trámite actual de la excepción de oscuridad o ambigüedad en el modo de proponer la demanda vulnera el derecho de defensa del demandado en el proceso civil? En función a ello, luego de haber realizado el estudio respectivo, consideramos que el trámite actual establecido por nuestro código procesal civil vigente para regular la excepción de oscuridad o ambigüedad en el modo de proponer la demanda impide que el demandado ejerza un adecuado derecho de defensa toda cuenta que la estructura procedimental de dicho trámite lo pone en un estado de desventaja y desigualdad frente al demandante. Ahora bien, para los efectos de llevar a cabo la presente investigación, hemos aplicado los métodos analítico, hermenéutico, inductivo, deductivo, dogmático, los cuales nos han permitido tener una mejor comprensión de la problemática abordada. Asimismo, se ha procedido a aplicar una encuesta a algunos docentes universitarios de la especialidad de Derecho Procesal Civil así como de Teoría General del Proceso. Finalmente, luego de los resultados que han sido obtenidos en las entrevistas aplicadas, se determinó que la relación tal y como en la actualidad se encuentra regulada la excepción de oscuridad o ambigüedad en el modo de proponer la demanda pone en un estado de indefensión muy grave y peligroso al demandado.Our topic of study focuses on the exception of obscurity or ambiguity in the way of submitting the application, stressing that its current policy frontally violates the right of defense of the defendant. During the course of this investigation, we have determined that the defendant is in a state of helplessness and disadvantage to the applicant when the latter presented an unintelligible or ambiguous demand and the first follows a plea of obscurity or ambiguity mode submitting the application, why and in order to synthesize our problems, we have prepared the following statement: how does the current process the exception of obscurity or ambiguity in the way of submitting the application violates the right of defense of the defendant in the process civil? On such a basis, after making the respective study, we believe that the current procedure established by our current civil procedure code to regulate the exception of obscurity or ambiguity in the way of submitting the application prevents the defendant exercised an adequate right of defense all that the procedural structure of this process puts you in a state of disadvantage and inequality against the plaintiff. However, for the purposes of carrying out this investigation, we applied the analytical, hermeneutical, inductive, deductive, dogmatic methods, which have allowed us to have a better understanding of the problems addressed. Also, it has proceeded to implement a survey of some university teachers specializing in Civil Procedural Law and General Theory of Process. Finally, after the results have been obtained in the interviews applied, it was determined that the relationship as it is now regulated except obscurity or ambiguity in the way of submitting the application put in a state of helplessness very serious and dangerous to the defendant.Tesi

Evaluating aliphatic CF, CF2, and CF3 groups as vibrational Stark effect reporters

Given the extensive use of fluorination in molecular design, it is imperative to understand the solvation properties of fluorinated compounds and the impact of the C–F bond on electrostatic interactions. Vibrational spectroscopy can provide direct insights into these interactions by using the C–F bond stretching [v(C–F)] as an electric field probe through the vibrational Stark effect (VSE). In this work, we explore the VSE of the three basic patterns of aliphatic fluorination, i.e., mono-, di-, and trifluorination in CF, CF2, and CF3 groups, respectively, and compare their response to the well-studied aromatic v(C–F). Magnitudes (i.e., Stark tuning rates) and orientations of the difference dipole vectors of the v(C–F)-containing normal modes were determined using density functional theory and a molecular dynamics (MD)-assisted solvatochromic analysis of model compounds in solvents of varying polarity. We obtain Stark tuning rates of 0.2–0.8 cm−1/(MV/cm), with smallest and largest electric field sensitivities for CFaliphatic and CF3,aliphatic, respectively. While average electric fields of solvation were oriented along the main symmetry axis of the CFn, and thus along its static dipole, the Stark tuning rate vectors were tilted by up to 87° potentially enabling to map electrostatics in multiple dimensions. We discuss the influence of conformational heterogeneity on spectral shifts and point out the importance of multipolar and/or polarizable MD force fields to describe the electrostatics of fluorinated molecules. The implications of this work are of direct relevance for studies of fluorinated molecules as found in pharmaceuticals, fluorinated peptides, and proteins

Interactions between the oomycete Pythium arrhenomanes and the rice root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola in aerobic Asian rice varieties

Background: Aerobic rice fields are frequently infested by pathogenic oomycetes (Pythium spp.) and the rice root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola. Here, the interaction between Pythium arrhenomanes and Meloidogyne graminicola was studied in rice roots of two aerobic rice varieties. In different experimental set-ups and infection regimes, plant growth, rice yield, Pythium colonization, as well as establishment, development and reproduction of M. graminicola were studied. Results: In this study, it is shown that the presence of P. arrhenomanes delays the establishment, development and reproduction of M. graminicola compared to single nematode infected plants. The delay in establishment and development of M. graminicola becomes stronger with higher P. arrhenomanes infection pressure. Conclusions: Our data indicate that P. arrhenomanes antagonizes M. graminicola in the rice root and that the plant benefits from this antagonism as shown by the yield data, especially when either of the pathogens is present in high levels
