Likelihood Estimation Of Passing The Licensure Examination For Teachers (Let) Using Multivariate Method
The main objective of the research was to determine the main components where BS Secondary Education Graduates (BSEG) should focus on their undergraduate academic subjects in preparation for the LET. The researchers used the Logistic Regression (LR) procedure in STATA using the grades of the 138 BSEG from 2010-2014. The dependent variable represents the result whether or not the BSEG has passed the LET. Five predictors were used; three were continuous and were transformed to be normally distributed. This was done so as to yield meaningful interpretations after the method. The transformed variables were the average grades in (1) basic non-mathematics subjects, (2) basic math subjects, and (3) Professional Education subjects. The other two were indicators of (4) the gender of the BSEG as well as (5) their majors, where math is in focus. The results showed that of the five predictors, only the education subjects and gender were significant. The outcome was then used to build an LR Model. It also implies that the education subjects, being a component in LET, must be given greater essence by the Teacher Education Institution, other stakeholders, and ultimately, future LET takers in order to have a better chance of becoming professional teachers especially on the first take. This paper can serve as a guide in remodeling curricula as well since notably, while the General Education Subjects provide aspiring teachers more knowledge in other fields, it is not tantamount to gaining higher probability of passing the professionalization

In vitro characterization of the antiviral activity of fucoidan from Cladosiphon okamuranus against Newcastle Disease Virus
Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) causes a serious infectious disease in birds that results in severe losses
in the worldwide poultry industry. Despite vaccination, NDV outbreaks have increased the necessity of alternative
prevention and control measures. Several recent studies focused on antiviral compounds obtained from natural
resources. Many extracts from marine organisms have been isolated and tested for pharmacological purposes, and
their antiviral activity has been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide present in the cell wall matrix of brown algae that has been demonstrated to inhibit certain enveloped viruses with low toxicity. This study evaluated the potential antiviral activity and the mechanism of action of fucoidan from Cladosiphon okamuranus against NDV in the Vero cell lin
In vitro anti-canine distemper virus activity of fucoidan extracted from the brown alga Cladosiphon okamuranus
Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a morbillivirus
related to measles virus that infects dogs and other
carnivores. CDV has a significant global impact on animal
health; however, there is no current antiviral treatment for CDV infection. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that sulfated polysaccharides exhibit antiviral properties both in vivo and in vitro, despite their low cytotoxicity to host cells. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide found in the cell wall matrix of brown algae. In this study, we evaluated in vitro anti-CDV activity of fucoidan, which was derived from Cladosiphon okamuranus. Fucoidan actively inhibited CDV replication in Vero cells at a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.1 lg/ml. The derived selectivity index (SI50) was[20,000. This polysaccharide
likely inhibits viral infection by interference in the early steps and by inhibiting CDV-mediated cell fusion. Fucoidan may be useful in development of pharmacological
strategies to treat and control CDV infection
The begomovirus Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus is not seed-transmitted in melon
Transmission of plant viruses through seed can be one of the major factors contributing to long- distance dispersal through global trade of seeds and can have important ecological consequences for virus dissemination. Begomoviruses (genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae), and among them isolates of the species Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV), cause significant yield losses in economically important crops worldwide. These viruses are horizontally transmitted in nature in a circulative and persistent manner by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci but in recent years several reports have raised the possibility of vertical transmission through seeds for some members of this genus. We have investigated the possible transmission by melon (Cucumis melo L.) seeds of a ToLCNDV isolate of the “Spain” strain, in three different melon cultivars (all susceptible to ToLCNDV). The presence of ToLCNDV in floral tissues and the detection of viral DNA in seeds reveals the seed-borne nature of this virus. However, grow-out studies conducted with the progeny of melon plants germinated from seeds collected from ToLCNDV-infected plants and evaluated at early (1 leaf) or at late (20 leaves) growth stages did not support the vertical transmission of ToLCNDV from seeds to the offspring.Universidad de Málaga. Virucidal and Synergistic Activity of Polyphenol-Rich Extracts of Seaweeds against Measles Virus
Although preventable by vaccination, Measles still causes thousands of deaths among young children worldwide. The discovery of new antivirals is a good approach to control new outbreaks that cause such death. In this study, we tested the antiviral activity against Measles virus (MeV) of Polyphenol-rich extracts (PPs) coming from five seaweeds collected and cultivated in Mexico. An MTT assay was performed to determine cytotoxicity effect, and antiviral activity was measured by syncytia reduction assay and confirmed by qPCR. PPs from Ecklonia arborea (formerly Eisenia arborea, Phaeophyceae) and Solieria filiformis (Rhodophyta) showed the highest Selectivity Index (SI), \u3e3750 and \u3e576.9 respectively. Both PPs extracts were selected to the subsequent experiments owing to their high efficacy and low cytotoxicity compared with ribavirin (SI of 11.57). The combinational effect of PPs with sulphated polysaccharides (SPs) and ribavirin were calculated by using Compusyn software. Synergistic activity was observed by combining both PPs with low concentrations of Solieria filiformis SPs (0.01 µg/mL). The antiviral activity of the best combinations was confirmed by qPCR. Virucidal assay, time of addition, and viral penetration evaluations suggested that PPs act mainly by inactivating the viral particle. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the virucidal effect of Polyphenol-rich extracts of seaweeds
Osteonecrosis of the femoral head safely healed with autologous, expanded, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in a multicentric trial with minimum 5 years follow-up
Background: Osteonecrosis (ON) of the femoral head represents a potentially severe
disease of the hip where the lack of bone regeneration may lead to femoral head collapse and secondary osteoarthritis, with serious pain and disability. The aim of this European, multicentric clinical trial
was to prove safety and early efficacy to heal early femoral head ON in patients through minimally
invasive surgical implantation of autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) expanded from
bone marrow (BM) under good manufacturing practices (GMP). Methods: Twenty-two patients with
femoral head ON (up to ARCO 2C) were recruited and surgically treated in France, Germany, Italy
and Spain with BM-derived, expanded autologous MSC (total dose 140 million MSC in 7 mL). The
investigational advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) was expanded from BM under the
same protocol in all four countries and approved by each National Competent Authority. Patients
were followed during two years for safety, based on adverse events, and for efficacy, based on clinical
assessment (pain and hip score) and imaging (X-rays and MRIs). Patients were also reviewed after
5 to 6 years at latest follow-up for final outcome. Results: No severe adverse event was recalled as
related to the ATMP. At 12 months, 16/20 per protocol and 16/22 under intention-to-treat (2 drop-out
at 3 and 5 months) maintained head sphericity and showed bone regeneration. Of the 4 hips with ON progression, 3 required total hip replacement (THR). At 5 years, one patient (healed at 2 years
visit) was not located, and 16/21 showed no progression or THR, 4/21 had received THR (all in the
first year) and 1 had progressed one stage without THR. Conclusions: Expanded MSCs implantation was safe. Early efficacy was confirmed in 80% of cases under protocol at 2 years. At 5 years, the overall results were maintained and 19% converted to THR, all in the first yearThe research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research
Council under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/FP7-HEALTH-2009): REBORNE Project, Grant Agreement 241876. Work in EFS and stromalab was also supported by the Agence Nationale pour la Recherche for support of the national infrastructure: “ECELLFRANCE
