    Investigando o Efeito Leidenfrost: um relato de uma atividade exploratória em dois contextos educativos

    Autores defendem que alguns dos objetivos do ensino de ciências atualmente são o desenvolvimento do pensamento crítico dos alunos; produção de reflexões e de conhecimento e construção da autonomia para a tomada de decisões cientificamente informadas. Isso envolve problematizar os modelos científicos e estudar os seus contextos e processos de produção. Por esse motivo, é fundamental familiarizar os estudantes com os processos de avaliação e crítica pelos quais se constitui a ciência. Com este objetivo, o presente trabalho traz o relato de uma atividade exploratória proposta a alunos de duas escolas do Rio de Janeiro, tendo como tema o efeito Leidenfrost. As respostas dos alunos foram organizadas em categorias a partir das quais são traçadas possibilidades para o trabalho do professor em sala de aula e delineadas tendências aparentes nos dois contextos educacionais

    The mechanism of formate oxidation by metal-dependent formate dehydrogenases

    J Biol Inorg Chem (2011) 16:1255–1268 DOI 10.1007/s00775-011-0813-8Metal-dependent formate dehydrogenases (Fdh) from prokaryotic organisms are members of the dimethyl sulfoxide reductase family of mononuclear molybdenum-containing and tungsten-containing enzymes. Fdhs catalyze the oxidation of the formate anion to carbon dioxide in a redox reaction that involves the transfer of two electrons from the substrate to the active site. The active site in the oxidized state comprises a hexacoordinated molybdenum or tungsten ion in a distorted trigonal prismatic geometry. Using this structural model, we calculated the catalytic mechanism of Fdh through density functional theory tools. The simulated mechanism was correlated with the experimental kinetic properties of three different Fdhs isolated from three different Desulfovibrio species. Our studies indicate that the C–H bond break is an event involved in the rate-limiting step of the catalytic cycle. The role in catalysis of conserved amino acid residues involved in metal coordination and near the metal active site is discussed on the basis of experimental and theoretical results

    Molybdenum Induces the expression of a protein containing a new heterometallic Mo-Fe cluster in desulfoVibrio alaskensis

    Biochemistry. 2009 Feb 10;48(5):873-82. doi: 10.1021/bi801773t.The characterization of a novel Mo-Fe protein (MorP) associated with a system that responds to Mo in Desulfovibrio alaskensis is reported. Biochemical characterization shows that MorP is a periplasmic homomultimer of high molecular weight (260 +/- 13 kDa) consisting of 16-18 monomers of 15321.1 +/- 0.5 Da. The UV/visible absorption spectrum of the as-isolated protein shows absorption peaks around 280, 320, and 570 nm with extinction coefficients of 18700, 12800, and 5000 M(-1) cm(-1), respectively. Metal content, EXAFS data and DFT calculations support the presence of a Mo-2S-[2Fe-2S]-2S-Mo cluster never reported before. Analysis of the available genomes from Desulfovibrio species shows that the MorP encoding gene is located downstream of a sensor and a regulator gene. This type of gene arrangement, called two component system, is used by the cell to regulate diverse physiological processes in response to changes in environmental conditions. Increase of both gene expression and protein production was observed when cells were cultured in the presence of 45 microM molybdenum.     On thermalization of magnetic nano-arrays at fabrication

    We propose a model to predict and control the statistical ensemble of magnetic degrees of freedom in Artificial Spin Ice (ASI) during thermalized adiabatic growth. We predict that as-grown arrays are controlled by the temperature at fabrication and by their lattice constant, and that they can be described by an effective temperature. If the geometry is conducive to a phase transition, then the lowest temperature phase is accessed in arrays of lattice constant smaller than a critical value, which depends on the temperature at deposition. Alternatively, for arrays of equal lattice constant, there is a temperature threshold at deposition and the lowest temperature phase is accessed for fabrication temperatures {\it larger rather than smaller} than this temperature threshold. Finally we show how to define and control the effective temperature of the as-grown array and how to measure critical exponents directly. We discuss the role of kinetics at the critical point, and applications to experiments, in particular to as-grown thermalized square ASI, and to magnetic monopole crystallization in as-grown honeycomb ASI.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures.     ID-Care: a Model for Sharing Wide Healthcare Data

    All over the world, there is a lot of patient health data in different locations such as hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and other organizations. In this sense, global identification of the patient has emerged as an everyday healthcare challenge. Governments and institutions have to prioritize satisfactory, quick, and integrated decision-making in a wide, dispersed, and global environment because of unexpected challenges like pandemics or threats. In the current scientific literature, some of the existing challenges include support for a standard global unique identification that considers privacy issues, the combination of multiple technological biometry implementations, and personal documents. Thus, we propose a decentralized software model based on blockchain and smart contracts that includes privacy, global unique person identification supporting multiple combinations of documents, and biometric data using the Global Standards 1 - GS1 healthcare industry standard. Furthermore, we defined a methodology to evaluate a hypothetical use case of this model where an integrated and standard global health data sharing personal identification is crucial. For this, we implemented the proposed model in a global-wide continent location through cloud machines, fog computing, and blockchain considering the unique patient data identification and evaluate a use case scenario based on the top 5 most globally visited tourist destinations (France, Spain, the United States of America, China, and Italy), with an approach based on this model. The results show that using a model for a global id for healthcare can help reduce costs, time, and efforts, especially in the context of health threats, where agility and financial support must be prioritized.N/

    A Fog and Blockchain Software Architecture for a Global Scale Vaccination Strategy

    Nowadays, there are many fragmented records of patient’s health data in different locations like hospitals, clinics, and organizations all around the world. With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, several governments and institutions struggled to have satisfactory, fast, and accurate decision-making in a wide, dispersed, and global environment. In the current literature, we found that the most common related challenges include delay (network latency), software scalability, health data privacy, and global patient identification. We propose to design, implement and evaluate a healthcare software architecture focused on a global vaccination strategy, considering healthcare privacy issues, latency mitigation, support of scalability, and the use of a global identification. We have designed and implemented a prototype of a healthcare software called Fog-Care, evaluating performance metrics like latency, throughput and send rate of a hypothetical scenario where a global integrated vaccination campaign is adopted in wide dispensed locations (Brazil, USA, and United Kingdom), with an approach based on blockchain, unique identity, and fog computing technologies. The evaluation results demonstrate that the minimum latency spends less than 1 second to run, and the average of this metric grows in a linear progression, showing that a decentralized infrastructure integrating blockchain, global unique identification, and fog computing are feasible to make a scalable solution for a global vaccination campaign within other hospitals, clinics, and research institutions around the world and its data-sharing issues of privacy, and identification.N/

    Approach to Endoscopic Procedures: A Routine Protocol from a Quaternary University Referral Center Exclusively for Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients

    OBJECTIVES: The present coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has ushered in an unprecedented era of quality control that has necessitated advanced safety precautions and the need to ensure the adequate protection of healthcare professionals (HCPs). Endoscopy units, endoscopists, and other HCP may be at a significant risk for transmission of the virus. Given the immense burden on the healthcare system and surge in the number of patients with COVID-19, well-designed protocols and recommendations are needed. We aimed to systematically characterize our approach to endoscopic procedures in a quaternary university hospital setting and provide summary protocol recommendations. METHOD: This descriptive study details a COVID-19-specific protocol designed to minimize infection risks to patients and healthcare workers in the endoscopy unit. RESULTS: Our institution, located in Sa˜o Paulo, Brazil, includes a 900-bed hospital, with a 200-bed-specific intensive care unit exclusively designed for patients with moderate and severe COVID-19. We highlighted recommendations for infection prevention and control during endoscopic procedures, including appropriate triage and screening, outpatient management and procedural recommendations, role and usage of personal protective equipment (PPE), and role and procedural logistics involving COVID-19-positive patients. We also detailed hospital protocols for reprocessing endoscopes and cleaning rooms and also provided recommendations to minimize severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 transmission. CONCLUSION: This COVID-19-specific administrative and clinical protocol can be replicated or adapted in multiple institutions and endoscopy units worldwide. Furthermore, the recommendations and summary protocol may improve patient and HCP safety in these trying times

    Avaliação da qualidade das águas de poços em comunidades e assentamentos rurais Mossoró-RN

    As águas subterrâneas são apontadas como uma alternativa viável para garantir o acesso das comunidades rurais do nordeste à água, a partir de investimentos públicos na perfuração de poços tubulares. Muitas comunidades rurais de Mossoró, RN, são abastecidas com água proveniente do aquífero Jandaíra, de elevada concentração de sais, sendo utilizada na irrigação de culturas sem o manejo adequado para o seu uso sustentável, o que pode acarretar em problemas de salinização. Devido aos impactos causados pelo uso de águas salobras na irrigação, para viabilizar a sua utilização deve-se adotar práticas de manejo da água e solo para o controle da salinidade. Desta forma de faz necessário caracterizar essas águas, para que seja possível estabelecer um manejo do sistema solo-água-planta da área irrigada. Assim, o presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a qualidade da água para fins de irrigação de comunidades rurais de Mossoró, abastecidas com águas salobras provenientes de poços tubulares, fornecendo estas informações como uma ferramenta de auxílio para o manejo adequado da utilização destas águas na irrigação. As análises dos resultados indicaram que as águas de poços de todas as comunidades apresentaram alto grau de restrição de uso para a irrigação quanto aos riscos de salinização, sodicidade e toxicidade de íons cloreto, necessitando de práticas de manejo
