The District Energy-Efficient Retrofitting of Torrelago (Laguna de Duero – Spain)
The urban growth is estimated to reach up the 66 % by 2050 and consequently the need of resources within the cities will increase significantly. This, combined with the 40 % of energy consumption and 36 % of CO2 emissions of the building sector, makes necessary to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable cities. The CITyFiED project contributes to this transition, aiming to develop an innovative and holistic methodological approach for energy-efficient district renovation and deliver three large scale demonstration cases in the cities of Lund (Sweden), Laguna de Duero (Spain) and Soma (Turkey). CITyFiED methodology consists of several phases that ease the decision-making tasks towards the district renovation, considering the energy efficiency as the main pillar and local authorities as clients. For the case of Torrelago district (Spain) the intervention consists of a set of energy conservative measures including the facąde retrofitting of 143.025 m2 of living space in 31 twelve-storey buildings; the renovation of the district heating network with a new biomass thermal plant; the integration of renewable energy sources, including a micro-cogeneration system, and the installation of individual smart meters. After the renovation action, one-year monitoring campaign is ongoing. The CITyFiED monitoring platform will collect information from the energy systems and deliver environmental, technical, economic and social key performance indicators by March 2019. At the end of the project the achievement of the predefined goals will be verified: Up to 36 % of energy saving and 3,429 tons-CO2/yr emissions saving covering the 59,4 % of the energy consumption with renewable sources.The research and results presented in this paper evolve from activities related to the CITyFiED project, which has received funding from the European Commission under the Grant Agreement no. 609129. A method to construct refracting profiles
We propose an original method for determining suitable refracting profiles
between two media to solve two related problems: to produce a given wave front
from a single point source after refraction at the refracting profile, and to
focus a given wave front in a fixed point. These profiles are obtained as
envelopes of specific families of Cartesian ovals. We study the singularities
of these profiles and give a method to construct them from the data of the

Exploring quality-aware architectural transformations at run-time: the ENIA case
Adapting software systems at run-time is a key issue, especially when these systems consist of components used as intermediary for human-computer interaction. In this sense, model transformation techniques have a widespread acceptance as a mechanism for adapting and evolving the software architecture of such systems. However, existing model transformations often focus on functional requirements, and quality attributes are only manually considered after the transformations are done. This paper aims to improve the quality of adaptations and evolutions in component-based software systems by taking into account quality attributes within the model transformation process. To this end, we present a quality-aware transformation process using software architecture metrics to select among many alternative model transformations. Such metrics evaluate the quality attributes of an architecture. We validate the presented quality-aware transformation process in ENIA, a geographic information system whose user interfaces are based on coarsegrained components and need to be adapted at run-time
Growth and optical characterization of indirect-gap AlxGa1−xAs alloys
Nonintentionally doped AlxGa1−xAs layers with 0.38 x 0.84 were grown on (100) GaAs substrates by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) under near-equilibrium conditions. The crystalline quality of the samples was studied by photoluminescence at 2 K and room temperature Raman spectroscopy. The peculiar behavior in the photoluminescence intensities of the indirect bound exciton line and the donor–acceptor pair transition is explained from the evolution of the silicon donor binding energy according to the aluminum composition. It was also possible to observe the excitonic transition corresponding to the AlxGa1−xAs/GaAs interface, despite the disorder and other factors which are normally involved when growing high-aluminum-content layers by this technique. Furthermore, Raman measurements show the quadratic variations of longitudinal optical phonon frequencies with aluminum concentration in good agreement with previous experimental results. Molecular dynamics simulation of the fragile glass former ortho-terphenyl: a flexible molecule model
We present a realistic model of the fragile glass former orthoterphenyl and
the results of extensive molecular dynamics simulations in which we
investigated its basic static and dynamic properties. In this model the
internal molecular interactions between the three rigid phenyl rings are
described by a set of force constants, including harmonic and anharmonic terms;
the interactions among different molecules are described by Lennard-Jones
site-site potentials. Self-diffusion properties are discussed in detail
together with the temperature and momentum dependencies of the
self-intermediate scattering function. The simulation data are compared with
existing experimental results and with the main predictions of the Mode

Low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis persists after seven years of follow up and is associated with a poorer outcome
Low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis is defined by the presence of very low numbers of circulating clonal B cells, usually phenotypically similar to chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells, whose biological and clinical significance remains elusive. Herein, we re-evaluated 65/91 low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis cases (54 chronic lymphocytic leukemia-like and 11 non-chronic lymphocytic leukemia-like) followed-up for a median of seven years, using high-sensitivity flow cytometry and interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization. Overall, the clone size significantly increased in 69% of low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis cases, but only one subject progressed to high-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis. In parallel, the frequency of cytogenetic alterations increased over time (32% vs. 61% of cases, respectively). The absolute number of the major T-cell and natural killer cell populations also increased, but only among chronic lymphocytic leukemia-like cases with increased clone size vs. age- and sex-matched controls. Although progression to chronic lymphocytic leukemia was not observed, the overall survival of low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis individuals was significantly reduced vs. non-monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis controls (P=0.03) plus the general population from the same region (P≤0.001), particularly among females (P=0.01); infection and cancer were the main causes of death in low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis. In summary, despite the fact that mid-term progression from low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis to high-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis and chronic lymphocytic leukemia appears to be unlikely, these clones persist at increased numbers, usually carrying more genetic alterations, and might thus be a marker of an impaired immune system indirectly associated with a poorer outcome, particularly among females.This work was supported by the RD06/0020/0035 and RD12/0036/0048 grants from Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa en Cáncer (RTICC), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, (Madrid, Spain and

Algorithm for normal random numbers
We propose a simple algorithm for generating normally distributed pseudo
random numbers. The algorithm simulates N molecules that exchange energy among
themselves following a simple stochastic rule. We prove that the system is
ergodic, and that a Maxwell like distribution that may be used as a source of
normally distributed random deviates follows when N tends to infinity. The
algorithm passes various performance tests, including Monte Carlo simulation of
a finite 2D Ising model using Wolff's algorithm. It only requires four simple
lines of computer code, and is approximately ten times faster than the

O trabalho analisa o processo de organização de produtores orgânicos da Andaluzia que estiveram envolvidos em uma tentativa de implantação de um sistema participativo de garantia. Esta iniciativa foi liderada pela administração dessa comunidade autônoma espanhola entre 2006 e 2008. O estudo baseia-se em entrevistas realizadas com atores sociais que estiveram implicados nesse processo, identificando os obstáculos políticos e organizativos que impediram que essa proposta pudesse avançar
