    Dissipative vortex solitons in 2D-lattices

    Get PDF
We report the existence of stable symmetric vortex-type solutions for two-dimensional nonlinear discrete dissipative systems governed by a cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We construct a whole family of vortex solitons with a topological charge S = 1. Surprisingly, the dynamical evolution of unstable solutions of this family does not alter significantly their profile, instead their phase distribution completely changes. They transform into two-charges swirl-vortex solitons. We dynamically excite this novel structure showing its experimental feasibility.Comment: 4 pages, 20 figure

MT1a mRNA Expression in Human Lung Cells (BEAS 2B) After Airborne PM10 and Copper Exposure: A Possible Biomarker for Asthma

Puerto Ricans have the highest prevalence, morbidity and mortality of asthma than any other ethnic group in the U.S. and can be triggered by different stimuli such as airborne Particle pollution (PM). PM transfers transition metals, including cooper, to the human airways generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Metallothionein protein (MT1A) is a free radical scavenger expected to be induced in lung cells by PM exposure; however, this has never been proven nor demonstrated. The hypothesis involves the amounts of PM10 in 2004, which would be significantly higher in the urban sites during months of March and June, thereby increasing PM metal exposure and inducing MT1A gene at the urban site. PM10 filters for Urban (Guaynabo) and rural (Fajardo) site were provided by the PREQB. Organic extracts were prepared from filters by means of Soxhlet Extraction and heavy metals were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. BEAS-2B cells were cultured and exposed to PM10 during 4 hrs. RNA was isolated and relative mRNA levels of MT1A were determined by RT-PCR. Urban PM10 concentrations were 35 ug/m3 and 60ug/m3 for the months of March and June, respectively. Concentrations of copper for this urban PM10 were 29.6 ppm and 50.3 ppm, for March and June, respectively. Exposure to Cu leads to an MT1A expression in lung cells demonstrating its response to metal exposure. Cellular response for the mRNA expression of MT1A was greater in relative high inflammation markers than in PM10 samples

Analysis and comparison of competitive balance in the Spanish ACB basketball league : a preliminary study

    Get PDF
Regardless its relevance in sports economics, competitive balance has not been studied neither in Spanish nor in European professional basketball. In this preliminary study we measured the competitive balance in the Spanish ACB League from seasons 1983/1984 to 2003/2004 using the well-known winning percentage standard deviation index. Results showed great difference between seasons and a general low competitive balance index. In addition, tournament designing did not seem to affect the competitive balance in ACB

Despite its benefits, Internet provides an accessible, affordable and anonymous way for the dissemination of offensive contents or hate speeches. Among their object of study Forensic Linguistics includes the authorship attribution of this type of messages. This study looks into the key methodological aspects to be considered in Authorship Attribution. The selection of the more appropriate features, the text size and how to draw conclusions from data are among them. There is still a long way to solve some of the problems related to them in this scientific field.

This work presents the innovation project Learning pills for the improvement of the degree thesis in the University Degree in Linguistics and Applied Languages, carried out during the academic year 2017-2018 in the context of the Degree in Linguistics and Applied Languages of the University of Cadiz. This project focuses on the development of audiovisual tutorials of short duration or learning pills about methodological aspects of the Thesis Degree, due to the observed problems that this work poses to our students. This article examines the characteristics of this type of academic works. It also explores the habits and expectations in the use of both social networks and audio-visual resources, and how students perceive them when searching for information. Finally, it analyzes the deficits observed in students by teachers when carrying out this type of works and the possibilities of improving the teaching-learning process

Social media as a teaching innovation tool for the promotion of interest and motivation in higher education

Social media is part of the daily life of university students, so it can become a useful teaching innovation tool. This paper describes the teaching innovation project carried out in the Degree in Linguistics and Applied Languages of the University of Cádiz, in which two profiles have been used, one on Facebook and the other one on Twitter, to share the content (news, papers, videos, job offers ...) related to linguistics and languages, specifically targeting degree students, in such a way that their autonomous work will be promoted from the shared contents in networks; their motivation will be increased, providing them with resources to broaden their knowledge about topics that especially interest them, and at the same time, boost their English written and oral comprehension, considering that news, articles and videos have also been shared in this language. The project has been evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively: the quantitative data of the scope of the profiles have been provided by the analytics of Facebook and Twitter and the qualitative ones have been extracted from an anonymous survey answered by the students of the degree. Conclusions support the usefulness of social networks as a tool for these purposes

As a part of a taxonomic revision of the Iberian taxa of Ornithogalum, results corresponding to O. subgen. Cathissa are reported. Quantitative and qualitative characters are studied in detail, and they are evaluated for the taxonomic value of morphological characters of the three considered taxa: O. concinnum, O. broteroi, and O. reverchonii. A complete description is presented for all accepted species, and data on their biology, habitat, and distribution are also included. Moreover, a key is provided to facilitate identification.
