Scaling and singularities in the entrainment of globally-coupled oscillators
The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled
oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase
dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a
Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the
diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from
the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the
unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly
saturated mode on the linear growth rate . In general
we find where is the
diffusion coefficient and is the mode number of the unstable mode. The
unusual factor arises from a singularity in the cubic term of

HFPK 334: An unusual Supernova Remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) radio-continuum and
XMM-Newton/Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) observations of the unusual
supernova remnant HFPK 334 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The remnant
follows a shell type morphology in the radio-continuum and has a size of
20~pc at the SMC distance. The X-ray morphology is similar, however, we
detect a prominent point source close to the center of the SNR exhibiting a
spectrum with a best fit powerlaw with a photon index of . This central point source is most likely a background object and cannot
be directly associated with the remnant. The high temperature, nonequilibrium
conditions in the diffuse region suggest that this gas has been recently
shocked and point toward a younger SNR with an age of years.
With an average radio spectral index of we find that an
equipartition magnetic field for the remnant is 90~G, a value
typical of younger SNRs in low-density environments. Also, we report detection
of scattered radio polarisation across the remnant at 20~cm, with a peak
fractional polarisation level of 255\%.Comment: 19 pages, 6-figures, submitted to A
Massive gas gangrene secondary to occult colon carcinoma
AbstractGas gangrene is a rare but often fatal soft-tissue infection. Because it is uncommon and the classic symptom of crepitus does not appear until the infection is advanced, prompt diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion. We present a case report of a middle-aged man who presented with acute onset lower-extremity pain that was initially thought to be due to deep vein thrombosis. After undergoing workup for pulmonary embolism, he was found to have massive gas gangrene of the lower extremity secondary to an occult colon adenocarcinoma and died within hours of presentation from multisystem organ failure
Hysteresis in the Mott Transition between Plasma and Insulating Gas
We show that hysteresis can occur in the transition between a neutral plasma
and the insulating gas consisting of neutral pairs bound by Coulomb attraction.
Since the transition depends sensitively on the screening length in the plasma,
regions of bistability occur in density--temperature phase space. We present
numerical results which indicate where these regions occur for systems such as
spin-polarized hydrogen, positronium gas, and excitons in a semiconductor.Comment: 9 pages (Latex/RevTex), 6 postscript figures which are in compressed
