    The Maya culture of Belize had an exceptional continuity and vitality throughout its history. Despite the difficult publishing situation in Belize and its complex social condition, its literature is trying to get out of its isolation and be known thanks to bilingual editions in English and Spanish. An interesting example of this literary production is the poetry of Amado Chan, an intellectual from Orange Walk District, in the Northern part of the country. This paper analyses his poetic production in the context of contemporary Belizean culture and its multiple linguistic, social and literary identities

    The goal of this article is to study the concept of time in the Maya culture, particularly in the today communities of k’iche’ area in Guatemala. Based on a fieldwork in Mexico and in Guatemala, it will be analyzed the prophetic use of the present calendar of 260 days and the concept of past, present and future prophecy and divination, through the consultation of the holy calendar cycle of tsolk’iin.The purpose is also to study the connections between the Maya Calendar and the Maya movements for the ethnic claims, as well as their political implications. Furthermore, it will be analyzed the strategic date of December, 21st 2012, which, further the present k’iche’ calendar, is falling on a day 4 Ajpuu, which a special day, used to ask for fertility and to plan future projects. It is also a day dedicated to the ancestors’ worship, a ritual always connected to the renovation and to the request of life protection, but never to the destruction and to the death

    This article aims to the study of contemporary Maya narrative of Guatemala, particularly the texts of the winners of Mayan literature Prize B’atz '2007, Leoncio Pablo Garcia and Miguel Ángel Oxlaj Cúmez. Their texts will be studied according to the cultural dynamics of the current Mayan society, their symbolic system and their spirituality. Contemporary Mayan literature is a space for political and social reflections, which proposes a different way of interpreting reality, beyond the rigid adherence to a literary canon imposed from western culture.El artículo se propone el estudio de la narrativa maya contemporánea de Guatemala, en particular de la obra de los dos ganadores del premio de literatura maya B’atz’ 2007, Leoncio Pablo García Talé y Miguel Ángel Oxlaj Cúmez.     En esta ponencia me propongo el estudio de la novela Los cuatro espejos , del ensayista y escritor costarricense Quince Duncan, reconocido intelectual y activista de la comunidad afrodescendiente. Su obra plantea la necesidad de renovar el canon literario hispanoamericano, al incluir elementos simbólicos y estéticos de la tradición africana y al plantear una relectura de las identidades. Parte de su trabajo apunta hacia la recuperación de la tradición oral y de la espiritualidad ancestral, para poder armar un cuestionamiento crítico del trauma del racismo y de la esclavitud desde una perspectiva afrodescendiente.In this paper I propose the analysis of Los cuatro espejos (The Four Mirrors), a novel by the Costa Rican essayist and writer Quince Duncan, an appreciate intellectual and activist from the Afro-descendant community. His work sets out the need to update the Latin-American canon, by including symbolic and aesthetic elements of African tradition and by proposing a rereading of identities. Part of this work aims at recovering the oral tradition and ancestral spirituality, in order to organize a critical questioning of the trauma of racism and slavery from an Afro-descendant perspective

    ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to study the rhetorical structure of the Ritual of the Bacabs, a colonial document of great importance in the context of Yucatec Maya literature. After a philological analysis, I will focus especially on the study of textual rhetoric and the marks of orality of this ritual document. I will also study the textual symbolism and networks of paronomasias, used to link diseases, body parts, animals and medicinal plants in the same healing action. The analysis of its rhetorical organization and the textual mechanisms of meaning production allows us to understand the functions of ritual language and the presence of a codified system of discourse. The basis of my theoretical approach is the convergence between rhetoric and semiotic study of discourse.RESUMEN En este trabajo propongo el estudio de la organización retórica de El ritual de los Bacabes, documento colonial de primera importancia en el contexto de la literatura maya yucateca. Después de un análisis filológico del manuscrito me enfocaré en el estudio de la retórica textual y de las marcas de oralidad presentes en el documento. También me dedicaré al estudio del simbolismo textual y de las redes paronomásticas, capaces de vincular en el mismo acto curativo enfermedades, partes del cuerpo, animales y plantas medicinales. El análisis de su organización retórica y de los mecanismos textuales de producción de sentido nos permite comprender las funciones del lenguaje ritual y la presencia de un sistema codificado de recursos retóricos y de producción de sentido.     Los miembros del grupo literario que nació en Guatemala en 1968, conocido como Nuevo Signo, presentan varios elementos en común: casi todos pertenecen a la misma generación, casi todos provienen de la provincia y todos tienen el interés en reflexionar sobre el destino y la naturaleza del hombre guatemalteco. A pesar del origen foráneo, del interior de la República, todos se reúnen en la capital y allí estrechan relaciones de amistad y de colaboración. Desde allí reflexionan sobre las contradicciones de la modernidad del país, en la dinámica entre el centro y la periferia, las áreas urbanas y las aldeas rurales, la tradición y el progreso tecnológico. En este trabajo me propongo una reflexión sobre la concepción de la modernidad urbana en la poesía de Nuevo Signo, su significado en las dinámicas sociales de Guatemala y su papel en el contexto político de los años Sesenta y Setenta
