Film blowing of PHB-based systems for home compostable food packaging
One of the routes to minimize the environmental impact of plastics waste is the use of bio-sourced and biodegradable alternatives, particularly for packaging applications. Although Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are attractive candidates for food packaging, they have poor processability, particularly for extrusion film blowing. Thus, one relatively successful alternative has been blending PHA with a biodegradable polymer. This work proposes film blowing of a co-extruded Poly (hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) layer with a poly butylene adipate-co-terephtalate (PBAT) layer to enhance bubble stability, mechanical and barrier properties. Co-extrusion is detailed, together with the different strategies followed to improve adhesion between film layers and the PHB content in the films. Films with thicknesses below 50 micron and elongation at break beyond 500 % were consistently produced.This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and

Numerical and experimental study of agglomerate dispersion in polymer extrusion
A model for agglomerate dispersion in screw extruders was developed and superimposed on the flow
patterns as simulated using the FIDAP software. A particle tracking algorithm with an adaptive time step was used to
follow the agglomerates trajectory. Along this flow path, the breakup probability was estimated using a Monte Carlo
method and in conjunction with the local fragmentation number. Particle size distributions and Shannon entropy were
computed along the screw channel. The results show good qualitative agreement between model predictions and
experimental data
Global mixing indices for single screw extrusion
The present work presents numerical simulations of dispersive and distributive mixing of a two
phase system being processed in a single screw extruder under various conditions. Models were developed to
quantify the degree of mixing of liquid-liquid and solids-liquid systems, for a given set of material properties,
operating conditions and extruder geometry
Transverse instability for non-normal parameters
We consider the behaviour of attractors near invariant subspaces on varying a
parameter that does not preserve the dynamics in the invariant subspace but is
otherwise generic, in a smooth dynamical system. We refer to such a parameter
as ``non-normal''. If there is chaos in the invariant subspace that is not
structurally stable, this has the effect of ``blurring out'' blowout
bifurcations over a range of parameter values that we show can have positive
measure in parameter space.
Associated with such blowout bifurcations are bifurcations to attractors
displaying a new type of intermittency that is phenomenologically similar to
on-off intermittency, but where the intersection of the attractor by the
invariant subspace is larger than a minimal attractor. The presence of distinct
repelling and attracting invariant sets leads us to refer to this as ``in-out''
intermittency. Such behaviour cannot appear in systems where the transverse
dynamics is a skew product over the system on the invariant subspace.
We characterise in-out intermittency in terms of its structure in phase space
and in terms of invariants of the dynamics obtained from a Markov model of the
attractor. This model predicts a scaling of the length of laminar phases that

Magnetic field generation in fully convective rotating spheres
Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of fully convective, rotating spheres with
volume heating near the center and cooling at the surface are presented. The
dynamo-generated magnetic field saturates at equipartition field strength near
the surface. In the interior, the field is dominated by small-scale structures,
but outside the sphere by the global scale. Azimuthal averages of the field
reveal a large-scale field of smaller amplitude also inside the star. The
internal angular velocity shows some tendency to be constant along cylinders

Do students with immigrant and native parents perceive themselves as equally engaged in school during adolescence?
Student engagement in school needs to be considered when comparing immigrant and native students, particularly at a timeof increasing migratory movements throughout the world. Diferences in cognitive, afective, behavioral, and agentic studentengagement dimensions were examined for students with immigrant and native parents, and for early and middle adolescence.A four-dimensional measure of student engagement was completed by 643 students (52.7% women). Results indicated that:students with native parents present higher cognitive and agentic engagement than students with immigrant parents; earlyadolescents are more cognitively engaged than middle adolescents; early adolescents with native parents present highercognitive engagement than early adolescents with immigrant parents and middle adolescents. These results contribute toknowledge advancement, enhancing the understanding of student engagement with immigrant and native parents duringearly and middle adolescence, which might stimulate additional research moving towards a more inclusive school. Observation and Modeling of the Solar-Cycle Variation of the Meridional Flow
We present independent observations of the solar-cycle variation of flows
near the solar surface and at a depth of about 60 Mm, in the latitude range
. We show that the time-varying components of the meridional flow
at these two depths have opposite sign, while the time-varying components of
the zonal flow are in phase. This is in agreement with previous results. We
then investigate whether the observations are consistent with a theoretical
model of solar-cycle dependent meridional circulation based on a flux-transport
dynamo combined with a geostrophic flow caused by increased radiative loss in
the active region belt (the only existing quantitative model). We find that the
model and the data are in qualitative agreement, although the amplitude of the
solar-cycle variation of the meridional flow at 60 Mm is underestimated by the

Prevalence of Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Peripheral Arterial Disease and the Value of the Ankle-brachial Index to Stratify Cardiovascular Risk
AbstractObjectivesTo determine the prevalence of ankle-brachial index (ABI)<0.9 and symptomatic peripheral arterial disease (PAD), association with cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF), and impact of adding ABI measurement to coronary heart disease (CHD) risk screening.DesignPopulation-based cross-sectional survey of 6262 participants aged 35–79 in Girona, Spain.MethodsStandardized measurements (CVRF, ABI, 10-year CHD risk) and history of intermittent claudication (IC), CHD, and stroke were recorded. ABI<0.9 was considered equivalent to moderate-to-high CHD risk (≥10%).ResultsABI<0.9 prevalence was 4.5%. Only 0.62% presented low ABI and IC. Age, current smoker, cardiovascular disease, and uncontrolled hypertension independently associated with ABI<0.9 in both sexes; IC was also associated in men and diabetes in women. Among participants 35–74 free of cardiovascular disease, 6.1% showed moderate-to-high 10-year CHD risk; adding ABI measurement yielded 8.7%. Conversely, the risk function identified 16.8% of these participants as having 10-year CHD risk>10%. In participants 75–79 free of cardiovascular disease, the prevalence of ABI<0.9 (i.e., CHD risk≥10%) was 11.9%.ConclusionsABI<0.9 is relatively frequent in those 35–79, particularly over 74. However, IC and CHD risk≥10% indicators are often missing. Adding ABI measurement to CHD-risk screening better identifies moderate-to-high cardiovascular risk patients
Reduction in the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes With the Mediterranean Diet: Results of the PREDIMED-Reus nutrition intervention randomized trial
OBJECTIVE - To test the effects of two Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) interventions versus a low-fat diet on incidence of diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - This was a three-arm randomized trial in 418 nondiabetic subjects aged 55-80 years recruited in one center (PREDIMED-Reus, northeastern Spain) of the Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea [PREDIMED] study, a large nutrition intervention trial for primary cardiovascular prevention in individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Participants were randomly assigned to education on a low-fat diet (control group) or to one of two MedDiets, supplemented with either free virgin olive oil (1 liter/week) or nuts (30 g/day). Diets were ad libitum, and no advice on physical activity was given. The main outcome was diabetes incidence diagnosed by the 2009 American Diabetes Association criteria. RESULTS - After a median follow-up of 4.0 years, diabetes incidence was 10.1% (95% CI 5.1-15.1), 11.0% (5.9 -16.1), and 17.9% (11.4 -24.4) in the MedDiet with olive oil group, the MedDiet with nuts group, and the control group, respectively. Multivariable adjusted hazard ratios of diabetes were 0.49 (0.25- 0.97) and 0.48 (0.24-0.96) in the MedDiet supplemented with olive oil and nuts groups, respectively, compared with the control group. When the two MedDiet groups were pooled and compared with the control group, diabetes incidence was reduced by 52% (27- 86). In all study arms, increased adherence to the MedDiet was inversely associated with diabetes incidence. Diabetes risk reduction occurred in the absence of significant changes in body weight or physical activity. High-content screen in human pluripotent cells identifies miRNA-regulated pathways controlling pluripotency and differentiation
Background: By post-transcriptionally regulating multiple target transcripts, microRNAs (miRNAs or miR) play important biological functions. H1 embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and NTera-2 embryonal carcinoma cells (ECCs) are two of the most widely used human pluripotent model cell lines, sharing several characteristics, including the expression of miRNAs associated to the pluripotent state or with differentiation. However, how each of these miRNAs functionally impacts the biological properties of these cells has not been systematically evaluated. Methods: We investigated the effects of 31 miRNAs on NTera-2 and H1 hESCs, by transfecting miRNA mimics. Following 3-4 days of culture, cells were stained for the pluripotency marker OCT4 and the G2 cell-cycle marker Cyclin B1, and nuclei and cytoplasm were co-stained with Hoechst and Cell Mask Blue, respectively. By using automated quantitative fluorescence microscopy (i.e., high-content screening (HCS)), we obtained several morphological and marker intensity measurements, in both cell compartments, allowing the generation of a multiparametric miR-induced phenotypic profile describing changes related to proliferation, cell cycle, pluripotency, and differentiation. Results: Despite the overall similarities between both cell types, some miRNAs elicited cell-specific effects, while some related miRNAs induced contrasting effects in the same cell. By identifying transcripts predicted to be commonly targeted by miRNAs inducing similar effects (profiles grouped by hierarchical clustering), we were able to uncover potentially modulated signaling pathways and biological processes, likely mediating the effects of the microRNAs on the distinct groups identified. Specifically, we show that miR-363 contributes to pluripotency maintenance, at least in part, by targeting NOTCH1 and PSEN1 and inhibiting Notch-induced differentiation, a mechanism that could be implicated in na\uefve and primed pluripotent states. Conclusions: We present the first multiparametric high-content microRNA functional screening in human pluripotent cells. Integration of this type of data with similar data obtained from siRNA screenings (using the same HCS assay) could provide a large-scale functional approach to identify and validate microRNA-mediated regulatory mechanisms controlling pluripotency and differentiation
