t-books: merging traditional storybooks with electronics

    Get PDF
In this paper, we describe the design process and a first pilot study of t-books, a toolkit consisting of an electronic platform, a book with slots on it and a set of picture cards that children place on the book to interact and explore the narrative. t-books was motivated by the wish to offer children an environment where they can play with the language elements, while engaging as story authors. In this process children can enlarge their vocabulary, experiment different storylines, simultaneously learning to create meaningful sequences that evolve to a narrative. At the same time children can build their own story world by choosing among a diversity of different characters, settings and actions according to their needs and preferences, thus generating a simulation environment within the story universe, where alternative scenarios, and what-if questions can be posed and tested. A first insight of children’s interaction with t-books was very promising showing that children were highly motivated to create and share their own stories.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - PTDC/CPE-CED/110417/2009 Doctoral Grant: SFRH / BD / 62531 / 2009

Introduction: The Mirizzi syndrome consists of the obstruction either of the common hepatic duct or the choledocus, secondary to the impact of calculus in the cystic duct or in the gallbladder infundibulum. According to the Csendes classification, Mirizzi syndrome is divided into five types that involve different surgical procedures. Materials and methods: After a literature review, fifteen patients with Mirizzi Syndrome are retrospectively described between 2008 and 2018 at the Unidade Saude da Guarda (ULSG). The clinical records were reviewed. Clinical data, gender, clinical condition, test results, operative procedures and type of Mirizzi syndrome (according to Csendes) were examined. Results: Of the 15 patients, 11 (73,3%) were women and 4 (26,7%) men. All of them (100%) showed abdominal pain, 14 (93,3%) nausea and vomit, 10 (66,7%) symptoms of cholangitis / acute cholecystitis, 5 (33%) recurrent jaundice, 4 (26,6%) choluria and weight loss and 2 (13,3%) itch. Every cases of Mirizzi syndrome was diagnosed intraoperatively and requiring conversion to laparotomy. Were identified 5(33,3%) cases with type III, 4 (26,6%) with type I, 3 (20%) with type II, 2 (13,3%) with type IV and 1 (6,7%) with type V. In 5 (33,3%) patients was treated with cholecystectomy and bilio-digestive anastomosis on Roux-en-Y, 3 (20%) by total cholecystectomy with Kher drain, 2 (13,3%) by total cholecystectomy, partial and partial with Kher drain, and finally 1 (6,6%) by cholecystectomy with Kher drain with suture of the gastric orifice. Conclusion: The treatment of Mirizzi Syndrome is a diagnosis and surgical challenge. Despite the era of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the laparotomic treatment of Mirizzi syndrome should be the standard procedure.

Surface crystallization of ionic liquid crystals

    Get PDF
The evidence for surface crystallization in ionic liquids is scarce. The existing reports seem to be contradictory as for its driving forces, since in the two compounds investigated in the literature, the contribution of coloumbic and van der Waals forces is very different. In this work 1-dodecyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate was studied and its surface crystallization characterized by surface tension, ellipsometry and optical microscopy. The results obtained seem to reconcile previous observations, and it was further shown, using the same techniques, that this phenomenon is prevalent in other ionic liquids. MD simulation results illustrate the different possibilities of organization, providing reasonable models to rationalize the experimental observations. This work was developed with the scope of the project CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, UID/CTM/50011/2019, Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM, UID/EQU/50020/2019, and of Instituto de Telecomunicaço˜es/IT (UID/EEA/50008/2013) – funded by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC). Predictors of Psychological Well-Being during Behavioral Obesity Treatment in Women

    Get PDF
This study examined the association of autonomy-related variables, including exercise motivation, with psychological well-being and quality of life, during obesity treatment. Middle-aged overweight/obese women (n = 239) participated in a 1-year behavioral program and completed questionnaires measuring need support, general self-determination, and exercise and treatment motivation. General and obesity-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL), self-esteem, depression, and anxiety were also assessed. Results showed positive correlations of self-determination and perceived need support with HRQOL and self-esteem, and negative associations with depression and anxiety (P < .001). Treatment autonomous motivation correlated positively with physical (P = .004) and weight-related HRQOL (P < .001), and negatively with depression (P = .025) and anxiety (P = .001). Exercise autonomous motivation was positively correlated with physical HRQOL (P < .001), mental HRQOL (P = .003), weight-related HRQOL (P < .001), and self-esteem (P = .003), and negatively with anxiety (P = .016). Findings confirm that self-determination theory's predictions apply to this population and setting, showing that self-determination, perceived need support, and autonomous self-regulation positively predict HRQOL and psychological well-being

2,4,5-Triaminopyrimidines as blue fluorescent probes for cell viability monitoring: synthesis, photophysical properties, and microscopy applications

    Get PDF
Monitoring cell viability is critical in cell biology, pathology, and drug discovery. Most cell viability assays are cell-destructive, time-consuming, expensive, and/or hazardous. Herein, we present a series of newly synthesized 2,4,5-triaminopyrimidine derivatives able to discriminate between live and dead cells. To our knowledge, these compounds are the first fluorescent nucleobase analogues (FNAs) with cell viability monitoring potential. These new fluorescent molecules are synthesized using highly efficient and cost- effective methods and feature unprecedented photophysical properties (longer absorption and emission wavelengths, environment-sensitive emission, and unprecedented brightness within FNAs). Using a live– dead Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell and theoretical assays, the fluorescent 2,4,5-triaminopyrimidine derivatives were found to specifically accumulate inside dead cells by interacting with dsDNA grooves, thus paving the way for the emergence of novel and safe fluorescent cell viability markers emitting in the blue region. As the majority of commercially available viability dyes emit in the green to red region of the visible spectrum, these novel markers might be useful to meet the needs of blue markers for co-staining combinations
