A case of Cowden syndrome with a novel mutation in the PTEN gene
Cowden syndrome (CS) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by macrocephaly and multiple hamartomas. The responsible gene is PTEN (phosphate and tensin homolog detected on chromosome 10), which negatively regulates cell proliferation and survival. We herein present a 46-year-old woman with the typical clinical features of CS. A DNA sequencing analysis of the coding regions and flanking introns of the PTEN gene revealed a novel heterozygous mutation (c.403A > G, p.Ile135Val) in exon 5 that had not been previously reported in CS. Optical emission from TiO2 plasma, generated by a nanosecond laser is spectroscopically
analysed. The main chemical species are identified and the spatio-temporal distribution of
the plasma parameters such as electron temperature and density are characterized based on the
study of spectral distribution of the line intensities and their broadening characteristics. The parameters
of laser induced plasma vary quickly owing to its expansion at low background pressure
and the possible deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions are tested to show
its validity
Photosynthetic Organisms in Subarctic Lake Ice
While sampling No-name lake, which is located in the Tanana Valley, Alaska, at 63°48'N., 144°35'W., we observed numerous bubbles containing mixed populations of photosynthetic bacteria and algae. Most of the material consisted of purple, pink and green colonies of bacteria. Few algae were present, and those were primarily life-cycle stages of Chlamydomonas, but the population was dominated by photosynthetic bacteria. This occurrence of large numbers of organisms in complex populations differs substantially from previous reports of organisms in lake ice. The ice environment was somewhat unusual in that numerous overflows had occurred during the winter. In these circumstances the rate of accretion at the bottom of the ice sheet is much reduced, temperatures remain close to the freezing point and free water can occur within the ice. The water below the ice was anoxic and this, in combination with the favourable physical factors and presence of bubbles, may have been responsible for the unusual occurrence of organisms in the lake ice
"All children are dwarfs": medical discourse and iconography of children's bodies
Ancient medical discourse conveys a mainly negative view of children's bodies. From Hippocrates to Galen, newborn children are defined as imperfect and ugly beings, associating an excessive softness and weakness with various anomalies. Aristotle links their physical disproportions with those of dwarfs and animals. These disproportions induce physiological troubles and mental incapacities. Hot-tempered and moist, children are dominated by their emotions and sensations. Often authors group them with other beings regarded as inferior, such as women, the old, the sick, the insane, the drunk. How are mythical and human children rendered in iconography? Do their characteristics correspond to the medical discourse? The image of children's bodies changes with the passing of time; the miniature adult of archaic Greece gradually turns into the plump toddler of the Hellenistic period. How can we interpret these transformations? Does the evolution of iconography reflect the transformation of society or does it mirror the progress of medical knowledge
Simulative Investigations of the Influence of Surface Indentations on Residual Stresses on Inner Raceways for Roller Element Bearings
Resource-efficient machine elements are in the focus of current research. One of the most widely used machine elements are roller bearings. Thus, the optimization of bearings and their tribological properties promises to result in significant resource savings. Special focus is set on the bearing fatigue life, which may be significantly reduced by indentations on the raceways. The reduction in fatigue life can be caused by processes such as rolling over particles or by brinelling. These processes induce local stress peaks and lead to elastic-plastic deformations of the raceways. During the subsequent operation, the pile up of material around the indentations is flattened and hence the residual stresses change. Inside these so called shoulders stress pealcs, residual stresses and hardening effects occur possibly resulting in crack initiation, crack growth under cyclic loading, and eventually spalling of material. For deeper and more sharp-edged indentations the bearing fatigue life is reduced more. To quantify the influence of an indentation on the bearing rating life a calculation model was developed based on the approach of IOANNIDES, BERGLING and GABELLI. For this, a 3D-FE model is used to calculate the three dimensional stress fields by superposition of residual and load stresses
