    Get PDF
Purpose This study aims to identify the legitimacy strategies employed by one of the largest Portuguese cement companies to defend and downplay its sustainability performance and activities related to two major controversies involving the company: co‐incineration and the location of the Outão plant. Design/methodology/approach A single case study methodology is employed for the empirical research. Sustainability reports were analysed in order to identify TimorL's sustainability disclosure practices, and semi‐structured interviews were conducted to complement the case analysis. This paper emphasises legitimacy theory and legitimacy repair strategies that were identified by Suchman. Findings Legitimacy strategies, including “don’t panic”; “create monitors”; “justify”; “disassociate” and “explain”, were identified in the actions TimorL took after the above‐mentioned controversies. The company initiated a series of actions to respond to the company's “crisis”. The conclusions of the study support the argument that sustainability strategies remain a powerful legitimacy tool. Originality/value The paper adds to the scarce research available on the sustainability disclosure and practices of companies by providing new empirical data. It contributes to a better understanding of how companies behave when they are faced with legitimacy gaps and how they act to restore their legitimacy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This paper is a study in Reverse Logistics (RL) that aims to analyse the reverse flow of medications with expired dates, in the pharmacies of the Campania region in Italy. The main objective is to analyse the final destination of medications that are not sold and are collected in pharmacies. The analysis of howthe company responsible for the collection of the medicines works was made using semistructured interviews, and a subsequent factor analysis of the collected data. The pharmacies of the main cities of this region were investigated, in order to understand their importance in this process, as well as to understand their main difficulties and challenges. A statistical analysis of the data allowed us to verify how pharmacies are accustomed to the current legislation and are aware of the importance of their role in the RL of the medications that are not sold with the expiration date. It was observed that pharmacies are very satisfied with the company responsible for the collection and referral of medicines and their materials to an adequate final destination. Both of them work in tune, respond well to current legislation and respect the environment.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Nowadays the Industry is becoming increasingly competitive with the emergence of even more advanced technologies. This environment leads the companies to look for a bigger availability of the assets, a higher quality of the products and consequently less costs. Thus, is because of this purpose that Maintenance is becoming even more fundamental. The focus of this paper was to develop a strategy of Predictive Maintenance on a Machine Tool with the aim of reducing the unplanned stops, increasing the productivity and creating the bases for an Industry 4.0 environment in the short term. Thus, a model has been created in order to fulfil this goal. The first step was the selection of the critical component of the machine tool that would be studied. In the next phase the variables that will be monitored were selected and their trigger limits. Finally, the necessary components to monitor this system were chosen. In order to reach the objective, a system of condition-based maintenance where the acoustic emissions and vibration of the bearing of a machine tool were monitor was proposed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Oracy, crucial for individuals to communicate, think, and learn, can be developed through schooling. Our study aimed to compare Polish and Portuguese teachers’ perceptions of oracy. Based on a literature review, a self-report survey was developed for the study. It comprised questions about: 1. the demographic information, 2. the practices in the classrooms, 3. teachers’ views and attitudes about oracy. 253 (62.00%) Portuguese and 157 (38.00%) Polish elementary school teachers participated. Our main results indicate that Polish and Portuguese teachers declared that they valued oracy, and devoted time during their lessons to promote and support its development in their students. However, the Portuguese teachers, as compared with the Polish teachers, focused more on discussions and debates among students, and allowed them more autonomy in their classrooms. They also appreciated more the importance of oracy for human development, including reasoning and literacy learning.
