Some operators that preserve the locality of a pseudovariety of semigroups

It is shown that if V is a local monoidal pseudovariety of semigroups, then K(m)V, D(m)V and LI(m)V are local. Other operators of the form Z(m)(_) are considered. In the process, results about the interplay between operators Z(m)(_) and (_)*D_k are obtained.Comment: To appear in International Journal of Algebra and Computatio

Fabricating consent for an ‘adjustment programme’: crisis narratives of economic journalists in Portugal

    Get PDF
Following Greece and Ireland, and preceding Spain and Cyprus, Portugal has been subject to a troika ‘adjustment program’ that lasted from mid-2011 to mid-2014. The implementation of the program was disturbed by ‘surprises’ stemming from its internal tensions, ‘exogenous’ shocks, resistance from the judicial system (the Constitutional Court), and opposition from large sections of the public. As in Greece, the program was experienced by most as a dramatic and traumatic event. Major actors in this drama have obviously been the troika institutions, the Portuguese government and its supporting parties, the Portuguese opposition parties, trade unions and other social movements. Other actors, namely journalists, arguably also played an important role. The research reported in this article is devoted to the role played by economic journalist during the ‘adjustment’ process. This research analyzed the content of the publications (op-eds) of some of the main Portuguese economic journalists prior to and during the period of implementation of the troika’s adjustment program. It surveyed all the publications (op-eds) of six authors between January 1, 2010 and July 30, 2014. The analysis of the journalist’s texts led to the following conclusions: a) the texts are rooted in a particular set of core (neoliberal) beliefs about the economy and its functioning – the ‘consensus view’; b) the crisis is perceived as an opportunity not to be missed to implement long due reforms aimed at approaching reality to the type of economy and society implicit in the ‘consensus view’; c) the texts were mainly concerned with deflecting opposition, or fabricating consent, to the ‘adjustment’.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

The Trypanosoma brucei AIR9-like protein is cytoskeleton-associated and is required for nucleus positioning and accurate cleavage furrow placement

AIR9 is a cytoskeleton-associated protein in Arabidopsis thaliana with roles in cytokinesis and cross wall maturation, and reported homologues in land plants and excavate protists, including trypanosomatids. We show that the Trypanosoma brucei AIR9-like protein, TbAIR9, is also cytoskeleton-associated and colocalises with the subpellicular microtubules. We find it to be expressed in all life cycle stages and show that it is essential for normal proliferation of trypanosomes in vitro. Depletion of TbAIR9 from procyclic trypanosomes resulted in increased cell length due to increased microtubule extension at the cell posterior. Additionally, the nucleus was re-positioned to a location posterior to the kinetoplast, leading to defects in cytokinesis and the generation of aberrant progeny. In contrast, in bloodstream trypanosomes, depletion of TbAIR9 had little effect on nucleus positioning, but resulted in aberrant cleavage furrow placement and the generation of non-equivalent daughter cells following cytokinesis. Our data provide insight into the control of nucleus positioning in this important pathogen and emphasise differences in the cytoskeleton and cell cycle control between two life cycle stages of the T. brucei parasite

    Get PDF
Self-efficacy reflects the belief that the individual has in his/her own capabilities to organize and execute actions that are needed to accomplish certain goals. On the other hand, Engagement refers to a positive psychological and motivational state, which is associated with individual well-being. This investigation aims to examine the relationship between these two variables, presenting the hypothesis that there is a positive association between self-efficacy and engagement, of engineering students in Higher Education. The sample was composed of 361 students (M = 20.54; SD = 4.24). Self-efficacy and engagement assessment was conducted through a questionnaire administered to students in classroom. Results show a positive and significant association between the variables, being the strongest association between the behavioral dimension of engagement and self-efficacy, which are, in turn, positively associated with academic performance variables. In this study we present and discuss these results and their implications for psychological research and practice.

    Developments in fish telemetry

    Get PDF
Freshwater and marine ecosystems continue to be the focus of significant environmental change associated with an expanding human population and a rapidly changing climate. Many organisms within these environments, and fish in particular, are susceptible to increasing pressures, ranging from exploitation to modifications and loss of habitat. In order to manage and conserve these populations and protect biodiversity, these resources must be managed in a sympathetic and responsible manner. One biological tool that is progressively at the cutting edge of aquatic conservation is telemetry, which is increasingly being used by scientists to investigate fundamental aspects of animal biology in order to conserve and manage natural resources. The Sixth Conference on Fish Telemetry held in Europe was organised by the University of Evora and the Institute of Oceanography of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in June 2005. The Conference attracted 162 delegates from 25 countries stimulating a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving and further promoting technological development and innovation in the field of wildlife telemetry. The Conference provided an excellent forum for scientists and engineers to exchange views and to disseminate information on recent developments in order to support and provide the scientific basis for the sustainable management of aquatic resources. At the conference 74 oral and 56 poster contributions presented, and after review by members of the editorial board, 26 manuscripts were selected for inclusion within these proceedings. The selected papers are organised into four sections: (1) Human Impacts and Fisheries; (2) Migration and Behaviour; (3) Species Conservation and Habitat Rehabilitation; (4) Methodology and New Technology. We would like to thank the support of two institutions for the organization of the Conference, the University of Évora and the Institute of Oceanography (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), as well as the sponsorship of Administração do Porto de Sines, Ambassade de France au Portugal, Bacalhôa wines of Portugal, British Council (Portugal), Câmara Municipal de Sesimbra, Direccão-Geral das Pescas e Aquicultura, Fundação Luso-Americana, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Instituto da Água, Instituto de Turismo de Portugal, Instituto Italiano di Cultura Lisboa, Oceaná rio de Lisboa, and Região de Turismo da Costa Azul. We would also like to thank the members of the Conference Secretariat, Scientific and Organizing Committees, and all the attendees for contributing directly or indirectly to the success of this event. Special thanks go to 68 independent referees for helping to peer-review and select the manuscripts for the proceedings
