Chinese–Spanish neural machine translation enhanced with character and word bitmap fonts
Recently, machine translation systems based on neural networks have reached state-of-the-art results for some pairs of languages (e.g., German–English). In this paper, we are investigating the performance of neural machine translation in Chinese–Spanish, which is a challenging language pair. Given that the meaning of a Chinese word can be related to its graphical representation, this work aims to enhance neural machine translation by using as input a combination of: words or characters and their corresponding bitmap fonts. The fact of performing the interpretation of every word or character as a bitmap font generates more informed vectorial representations. Best results are obtained when using words plus their bitmap fonts obtaining an improvement (over a competitive neural MT baseline system) of almost six BLEU, five METEOR points and ranked coherently better in the human evaluation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study
This study aims to compare adequate fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake between immigrants and natives in Portugal, and to analyse factors associated with consumption of F&V among immigrants. Data from a population based cross-sectional study (2014) was used. The final sample comprised 17,410 participants (≥20 years old), of whom 7.4% were immigrants. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression models were conducted to investigate the association between adequate F&V intake, sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics. Adequate F&V intake was more prevalent among immigrants (21.1% (95% CI: 19.0⁻23.4)) than natives (18.5% (95% CI: 17.9⁻19.1)), (p = 0.000). Association between migrant status and adequate F&V intake was only evident for men: immigrants were less likely to achieve an adequate F&V intake (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.66⁻0.68) when compared to Portuguese. Among immigrants, being female, older, with a higher education, and living in a low urbanisation area increased the odds of having F&V consumption closer to the recommendations. Adjusting for other factors, length of residence appears as a risk factor (15 or more years vs. 0⁻9 years: OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.50⁻0.53), (p = 0.000) for adequate F&V intake. Policies aiming to promote adequate F&V consumption should consider both populations groups, and gender-based strategies should address proper sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle determinants.publishersversionpublishe
Chemical trends in the Galactic halo from APOGEE data
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus. The galaxy formation process in the A cold dark matter scenario can be constrained from the analysis of stars in the Milky Way's halo system. We examine the variation of chemical abundances in distant halo stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment ( APOGEE), as a function of distance from the Galactic Centre ( r) and iron abundance ([M/H]), in the range 5 less than or similar to r less than or similar to 30 kpc and - 2.5 15 kpc and [M/H] > - 1.1 (larger in the case of O, Mg, and S) with respect to the nearest halo stars. This result confirms previous claims for low-alpha stars found at larger distances. Chemical differences in elements with other nucleosynthetic origins (Ni, K, Na, and Al) are also detected. C and N do not provide reliable information about the interstellar medium from which stars formed because our sample comprises red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars and can experience mixing of material to their surfaces.https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article-lookup/doi/10.1093/mnras/stw286
Packaging Orphaned Collections for Long Term Preservation
This report gives an introduction and background to the area and necessity of archiving online collections. The goal of the research was to develop a tool able to archive metadata and data from OAI-PMH compliant repositories effectively. After running tests it was seen that while the metadata harvesting and archiving was effective, the data harvesting needed more work due to the brute force nature of link extraction
The Firefighter Problem: A Structural Analysis
We consider the complexity of the firefighter problem where b>=1 firefighters
are available at each time step. This problem is proved NP-complete even on
trees of degree at most three and budget one (Finbow et al.,2007) and on trees
of bounded degree b+3 for any fixed budget b>=2 (Bazgan et al.,2012). In this
paper, we provide further insight into the complexity landscape of the problem
by showing that the pathwidth and the maximum degree of the input graph govern
its complexity. More precisely, we first prove that the problem is NP-complete
even on trees of pathwidth at most three for any fixed budget b>=1. We then
show that the problem turns out to be fixed parameter-tractable with respect to
the combined parameter "pathwidth" and "maximum degree" of the input graph
Epidemiological study on vocal disorders in paediatric age
Few studies analyzed the diffusion of vocal alterations especially
in childhood. Aim of our study was to quantify the numbers of
subjects, in paediatric age, in which dysphonia was diagnosed in
our department of Phoniatrics, during a period of 5 years, (January
2002-December 2006), and also to evaluate the influence of
some potential risk factors. In the considered period it emerged
that the diagnosis of dysphonia was made in 312 children (17.2%
of the patients affected from dysphonia), aged between 2 and
16 years old, with a major prevalence amongst males (57%)
than females (43%). On the contrary in the adult population the
prevalence was: 23% in males and 77% in females. In paediatric
population, the most affected range of age is the one between 8
and 14, in both male and female gender (59.6%). In 82.4% of
the cases there were vocal fold lesions. The 90.3% of children
with vocal fold alterations presented lesions secondary to vocal
abuse and misuse and classifiable as functional dysphonia. The
proportion of functional dysphonia in our sample was 92%. The
65% of children belonged to large families with more than two
children, and the 30% had a family history of dysphonia (brothers,
parents). The study of the behavioural characteristics has
shown aggressive and hyperactive attitudes in 83% of the cases.
Since in the ethiopathogenesis of the childhood dysphonia the
tendency to vocal abuse has a predominant role, it would be
useful to encourage the diffusion of programmes of information
to show the risks linked to this abuse in children, in order to
prevent the development of dysphonia in paediatric age
SILAC-based quantitative proteomic analysis of Drosophila gastrula stage embryos mutant for fibroblast growth factor signalling
Quantitative proteomic analyses in combination with genetics provide powerful tools in developmental cell signalling research. Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most widely used genetic models for studying development and disease. Here we combined quantitative proteomics with genetic selection to determine changes in the proteome upon depletion of Heartless (Htl) Fibroblast-Growth Factor (FGF) receptor signalling in Drosophila embryos at the gastrula stage. We present a robust, single generation SILAC (stable isotope labelling with amino acids in cell culture) protocol for labelling proteins in early embryos. For the selection of homozygously mutant embryos at the pre-gastrula stage, we developed an independent genetic marker. Our analyses detected quantitative changes in the global proteome of htl mutant embryos during gastrulation. We identified distinct classes of downregulated and upregulated proteins, and network analyses indicate functionally related groups of proteins in each class. In addition, we identified changes in the abundance of phosphopeptides. In summary, our quantitative proteomic analysis reveals global changes in metabolic, nucleoplasmic, cytoskeletal and transport proteins in htl mutant embryos
Administration of intravenous iron formulations induces complement activation in-vivo
Background: Intravenous (IV) iron is widely used to treat anemia in chronic kidney disease patients. Previously, iron formulations were shown to induce immune activation in-vitro. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of IV iron on complement activation in-vivo, and whether this subsequently induces inflammation and/or oxidative stress. Methods: Two distinct patient groups were included: 51 non-dialysis and 32 dialysis patients. The non-dialysis group received iron sucrose or ferric carboxymaltose, based on physicians’ choice. Plasma samples were collected prior to and 1 h after completion of IV iron infusion. The dialysis group received iron sucrose exclusively. Plasma samples were collected at the start and end of two consecutive hemodialysis sessions, one with and one without IV iron. Finally, plasma levels of MBL, C1q, properdin, factor D, sC5b-9, MPO, PTX3 were assessed by ELISA. Results: In the non-dialysis group, sC5b-9 levels significantly increased after IV iron by 32%, while levels of factor D and MBL significantly dropped. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that iron sucrose induced complement activation whereas ferric carboxymaltose did not. In the dialysis group, levels of sC5b-9 significantly increased by 46% during the dialysis session with IV iron, while factor D levels significantly fell. Furthermore, the relative decrease in factor D by IV iron correlated significantly with the relative increase in sC5b-9 by IV iron. MPO levels rose significantly during the dialysis session with IV iron, but not in the session without iron. Moreover, the relative increase in MPO and sC5b-9 by IV iron correlated significantly. PTX3 levels were not affected by IV iron. Conclusions: Iron sucrose but not ferric carboxymaltose, results in complement activation possibly via the lectin and alternative pathway partially mediating oxidative stress but not inflammation.Conflict of Interest Statement: CG received speaking fees and research funding from Vifor Pharma
