The present study described with different microscopy approaches chloroplasts lobes in Laurencia sensu latu (Rhodophyta) species and found inter-specific differences among them. Chloroplasts were investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). Using and TEM and HRSEM images we distinguished chloroplasts with lobes than chloroplasts without lobes in Yuzurua poiteaui var. gemmifera (Harvey) M. J. Wynne and Laurencia dendroidea J. Agardh cortical cells. The LSM images showed chloroplasts lobes (CLs) with different morphologies, varying from thicker and longer undulated projections in Y. poiteaui var. and L. dendroidea to very small and thin tubules as in Laurencia translucida Fujii & Cordeiro-Marino. The diameter and length of CLs from Y poiteaui var. and L. dendroidea were significantly higher than L. translucida CLs (p \u3c 0.01). Based on LSM observations, we suggest that lobes morphology has a taxonomic validity only to characterize L. translucida species

An Enhanced Architecture for LARIISA: An Intelligent System for Decision Making and Service Provision for e-Health using the cloud

    Get PDF
International audienceHealth care services can be scarce and expensive in some countries and especially in isolated regions. The lack of information can degrade health care services, for example, by ineffective resource allocation or failure in epidemiological prediction. This paper proposes an architecture for system of decision making and service provisioning in the health care context. It encompasses and integrates data produced by environmental sensors installed in the assisted homes, medical data sets, domain-specific and semantic enriched data sets, and all data generated and collected in applications installed on mobile phones, wearable devices, desktops, web servers, and smart television. LARIISA architecture is presented as a platform to manage, provide and launch services that monitor and analyze data to supply relevant information to decision makers and health care actors that participate in the health care supply chain

Background: Lateral gene transfer plays a central role in the dissemination of carbapenem resistance in bacterial pathogens associated with nosocomial infections, mainly Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Despite their clinical significance, there is little information regarding the mobile genetic elements and mechanism of acquisition and propagation of lateral genes in P. aeruginosa, and they remain largely unknown. Objectives: The present study characterized the genetic context of blaKPC-2 in carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa strain BH9.Methods:Pseudomonas aeruginosa BH9 sequencing was performed using the long-read PacBio SMRT platform and the Ion Proton System. De novo assembly was carried out using the SMRT pipeline and Canu, and gene prediction and annotation were performed using Prokka and RAST.Results:Pseudomonas aeruginosa BH9 exhibited a 7.1 Mb circular chromosome. However, the blaKPC-2 gene is located in an additional contig composed by a small plasmid pBH6 from P. aeruginosa strain BH6 and several phage-related genes. Further analysis revealed that the beginning and end of the contig contain identical sequences, supporting a circular plasmid structure. This structure spans 41,087 bp, exhibiting all the Mu-like phage landmarks. In addition, 5-bp direct repeats (GGATG) flanking the pBH6 ends were found, strongly indicating integration of the Mu-like phage into the pBH6 plasmid. Mu phages are commonly found in P. aeruginosa. However, for the first time showing a potential impact in shaping the vehicles of the dissemination of antimicrobial (e.g., plasmid pBH6) resistance genes in the Pseudomonas genus. Conclusion: pBH6 captured the Mu-like Phage BH9, creating a co-integrate pBH6::Phage BH9, and this phage-plasmid complex may represent novel case of a phage-like plasmid

The use of agile methods has become essential in software development at the present time. Among the existing methods, Scrum is one of the major ones, and is used to manage projects in companies, even outside of the scope of software systems development. Considering the relevance of this subject and the success usually obtained in learning through educational games, Scrumie was proposed to teach the management of Scrum projects. Scrumie applies intelligence in multiagent architecture being developed with Agile Passi an agent oriented methodology. This paper contains a proposal, modeling, implementation and evaluation of the Scrumie game

Introduction: The involvement of the visual system can reduce the stability, re-sulting in increased body sway and/or change in movement strategy. Objective: To evaluate the balance in children with visual impairment (DV) on the school stage. Methods: A total of five participants diagnosed with low vision (P1 and P5) and total blindness (P2, P3 and P4) were analysed. The evaluation was con-ducted through a questionnaire, clinical trial implementationand evaluation of the balance (EEP and PF 400 biomec). Results: The total score of EEP P1, P2 and P4 was 56 points, P3 was 53, and P5 was 55 points. In PF, P1 and P5 had better main-tain balance. All participants had trouble staying on leg support. Conclusion: Children with DV are able to perform ADLs, but may be at greater risk of falls, especially those that require a single leg stance
