Modelling a Particle Detector in Field Theory
Particle detector models allow to give an operational definition to the
particle content of a given quantum state of a field theory. The commonly
adopted Unruh-DeWitt type of detector is known to undergo temporary transitions
to excited states even when at rest and in the Minkowski vacuum. We argue that
real detectors do not feature this property, as the configuration "detector in
its ground state + vacuum of the field" is generally a stable bound state of
the underlying fundamental theory (e.g. the ground state-hydrogen atom in a
suitable QED with electrons and protons) in the non-accelerated case. As a
concrete example, we study a local relativistic field theory where a stable
particle can capture a light quantum and form a quasi-stable state. As
expected, to such a stable particle correspond energy eigenstates of the full
theory, as is shown explicitly by using a dressed particle formalism at first
order in perturbation theory. We derive an effective model of detector (at
rest) where the stable particle and the quasi-stable configurations correspond
to the two internal levels, "ground" and "excited", of the detector.Comment: 13 pages, references added, final versio

The transition from conventional to organic agriculture is not an easy task, as it involves complicated procedures for peasant families. The objective of this paper is to discuss if the peasant families are able to write down the requirements for organic certification through a case study in a lot of members of the Welfare Group, in settlement 72, in the municipality of Ladário / MS, on the border of Brazil with Bolivia. Fieldwork was used, with a qualitative approach, in the second half of 2018. The description of the activities developed by the family was done by the ethnographic method. It was observed that, under the conditions of the peasant family studied, the annotations on the agricultural systems are important bottlenecks between the passage of conventional agriculture, through the agro-ecological transition to organic certification, even though the Social Control Organizations.Título em inglês: Case study on the difficulties of notes for the effects of organic certification of peasants families

We present a new simple tool based on a scatter plot of the modulation curve in which the counts in each angular bin are reported after a shifting by 1/4 of the period. The sinusoidal pattern is thus transformed in a circular plot whose radius is equal to the amplitude of the modulation, while for a not polarized radiation the scatter plot is reduced to a random point distribution centred at the mean frequency value. The advantage of this tool is that one can easily evaluate the statistical significance of the polarimetric detection and can obtain useful information on the quality of the measurement
Antiplasmodial and trypanocidal activity of violacein and deoxyviolacein produced from synthetic operons.
BACKGROUND: Violacein is a deep violet compound that is produced by a number of bacterial species. It is synthesized from tryptophan by a pathway that involves the sequential action of 5 different enzymes (encoded by genes vioA to vioE). Violacein has antibacterial, antiparasitic, and antiviral activities, and also has the potential of inducing apoptosis in certain cancer cells. RESULTS: Here, we describe the construction of a series of plasmids harboring the complete or partial violacein biosynthesis operon and their use to enable production of violacein and deoxyviolacein in E.coli. We performed in vitro assays to determine the biological activity of these compounds against Plasmodium, Trypanosoma, and mammalian cells. We found that, while deoxyviolacein has a lower activity against parasites than violacein, its toxicity to mammalian cells is insignificant compared to that of violacein. CONCLUSIONS: We constructed E. coli strains capable of producing biologically active violacein and related compounds, and propose that deoxyviolacein might be a useful starting compound for the development of antiparasite drugs
Acute Capsaicin Analog Supplementation Improves 400 M and 3000 M Running Time-Trial Performance
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(2): 755-765, 2020. Objectives: Performance in running-based sport depends on the ability to perform repetitive high intensity muscle contractions. Previous studies have shown that capsaicin analog (CAP) (i.e. Capsiate) supplementation may improve this performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect of CAP supplementation on short (400 m) and middle distance (3000 m) running time-trial performance, maximum heart rate (HR), and rate of perceived exertion (RPE). Methods: Twelve physically active men completed four randomized, double-blind trials: CAP condition (12 mg) or a placebo condition. Forty-five minutes after supplementation, the participants performed a 400- or 3000-meter running time trial. Time (in seconds) was recorded. HR was analyzed at rest and immediately post-exercise, and RPE was collected immediately after exercise. Results: For both the 400 m time-trial (CAP = 66.4 + 4.2 sec vs Placebo = 67.1 + 4.8 sec, p = 0.046) and the 3000 m time-trial (CAP = 893.9 ± 46.8 sec vs Placebo = 915.2 ± 67.6 sec, p = 0.015), the time in seconds was significantly less in the CAP compared to placebo conditions. There were no statistically significant differences for HR and RPE in any condition. Conclusion: In summary, acute CAP supplementation improved 400 m and 3000 m running time-trial performance in a distance-dependent way but without modifying the HR and RPE
World Press Photo 2012: the discursive construction of the Arab Spring
This article aims to analyze how the Arab Spring phenomenon was represented in the award-winning photographs of the World Press Photo contest in 2012.
Although news photographs are usually seen as indexes of the real, they often limit the perception of individuals and influence their social practices.
Also the winning photographs in 2012 of the World Press Photo, one of the most prestigious photojournalism contests, do not escape the discursive constructivism that shapes the representation and perception of events.
Drawing from critical discourse analysis, namely from the theoretical tools of barthesian semiotics and Gunther Kress’s and Theo van Leeuwen’s social semiotics, we sought to interpret the 38 award-winning photographs of the World Press Photo contest in 2012, in order to reflect on the way they have contributed to our understanding of the Arab Revolt and aroused our interest and imagination to the unfolding of the conflict.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Amazonian plant natural products:perspectives for discovery of new antimalarial drug leads
Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria parasites are now resistant, or showing signs of resistance, to most drugs used in therapy. Novel chemical entities that exhibit new mechanisms of antiplasmodial action are needed. New antimalarials that block transmission of Plasmodium spp. from humans to Anopheles mosquito vectors are key to malaria eradication efforts. Although P. vivax causes a considerable number of malaria cases, its importance has for long been neglected. Vivax malaria can cause severe manifestations and death; hence there is a need for P. vivax-directed research. Plants used in traditional medicine, namely Artemisia annua and Cinchona spp. are the sources of the antimalarial natural products artemisinin and quinine, respectively. Based on these compounds, semi-synthetic artemisinin-derivatives and synthetic quinoline antimalarials have been developed and are the most important drugs in the current therapeutic arsenal for combating malaria. In the Amazon region, where P. vivax predominates, there is a local tradition of using plant-derived preparations to treat malaria. Here, we review the current P. falciparum and P. vivax drug-sensitivity assays, focusing on challenges and perspectives of drug discovery for P. vivax, including tests against hypnozoites. We also present the latest findings of our group and others on the antiplasmodial and antimalarial chemical components from Amazonian plants that may be potential drug leads against malaria
Mobile application development exploiting science gateway technologies
Nowadays, collaborative applications are valuable tools for scientists to share their studies and experiences,
for example, by interacting simultaneously with their data and outcomes giving feedback to other colleagues
on how the data are processed. This paper presents a mobile application connected to a workflow-enabled
framework to perform visualization and data analysis of large-scale, multi-dimensional datasets on distributed computing infrastructures. In particular, the usage of workflow-driven applications, through science
gateway technologies, allows the scientist to share heavy data exploration tasks as workflows and the relative
results in a transparent and user-friendly way
