No entanto,
The death of the children to the hand of their parents, is an difficult act to understand,
since the safe haven of the children should be their parents first. However, there are
several cases that happened from past times until the present day.
In this project, filicide was the dominant theme as such order was based on the attempt
to understand the motivations of parents take the life of a being born of the same.
We proceeded to the analysis of different types of filicide as well as the features of
offenders and victims as well, as the methods used for the murdering of children,
verifying that there is a difference in these kind of homicidal. Finally, we analyzed
studies of different authors, where we can compare, between 1961 and 2011, in Canada,
the main motivations for the crime
Today’s students of higher education are considered digital natives. They have a wide array of technologies at their disposal that are used in their day-to-day lives in very different contexts; including recreation, work and academic. This scenario promotes a change of culture by the main actors associated with the Teaching/Learning process. This prompted the development of the present thesis which aims to evaluate the degree of use and acceptance of technologies supporting the Teaching/Learning process in Higher Education Institutions (HEI).
The methodology used when conducting this study was based initially on a review of the specialized literature, identifying the three main technological generations supporting the Teaching/Learning process: Learning Management Systems (LMS), Web 2.0 technologies and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Subsequently, the technologies recognized as the most relevant within each of these generations have been the subject of (i) a systematic literature review, (ii) a content analysis elaborated on the platforms/technologies used in international Higher Education Institutions, and (iii) an empirical work conducted at a Portuguese Higher Education Institution. Concerning the latter, an understanding of the behavior of the two main players involved in the Teaching/Learning process (students and teachers) was particularly sought after. Therefore, studies were conducted on (i) the students’ use of the main technologies, (ii) the students’ acceptance of some of these technologies in the context of Teaching/Learning and (iii) the use and acceptance of the technologies by teachers.
The results indicated that the Moodle platform is the LMS most used in Higher Education Institutions. In this context, the platform is mostly used as a content repository and a communication channel. As for Web 2.0, Video Sharing, Social Networks and Wikis were proven to be the technologies most used by students and teachers. The results also revealed that the technologies in question are well accepted by both parties, thus showing that their adoption could benefit the Teaching/Learning process in the new technological paradigm. Regarding the MOOCs, few teachers showed knowledge of the concept and no teachers who had created these type of courses were identified.
This study resulted in the development of seven scientific works with peer review, being five scientific papers published or submitted to international scientific journals and two chapters published in international books. These scientific works constitute an integral part of this doctoral thesis.
Investigation of laser based processes to optimize eletrospun nanofiber nonwovens for tissue engineering
Polymers and especially polymeric nanofibers are widely investigated in tissue
engineering. These materials can imitate the extracellular matrix. Therefore, they can be used as scaffolds for growing human cells. However, in many cases a surface treatment of the nanofiber nonwovens is useful to enhance the cell adhesion. The polar and dispersion components of surface free energy have to be adjusted to control the wettability.
To optimize the cell colonization on electrospun nanofibers, polyamide (PA 6.6) and polylactide (PLA) fibers were processed with different types of pulsed UV laser radiation. For comparison polyimide (PI), PA and PLA bulk materials were also investigated. Static contact angles were measured before and after laser processing to investigate the effects of laser irradiation on the wettability. The morphology of the treated areas was evaluated by confocal and scanning electron microscopy. Chemical analyses, like FTIR-ATR were also performed.
The wettability of the different materials was changed. PA nanofiber nonwovens are hydrophilic and are appropriate for good adhesion of some kind of cells. PLA nanofiber nonwovens are hydrophobic. By certain laser processes, it was also possible to make this material more hydrophilic. It was observed, that the laser generated topography of the nonwovens plays a great rule in the wettability
Experiences over possessions: Millennials and the experience economy
Nowadays, consumers all over the world are opting for having leisure experiences over owning
material possessions. One group in particular is said to be primarily responsible for driving this
consumer shift - the millennial generation. As millennials become the generation with the
highest global spending power and global expenditure on the experience economy continues to
rise, it is pressing to comprehend the dynamic of this environment.
Hence, the objective of this dissertation is to better understand the relation between the
millennial generation and the experience economy and, more precisely, this cohort’s preference
for experiences over possessions and the role played by the experiential categories themselves
(entertainment, educational, escapist and esthetic).
As such, to discover which experiential realms and elements are more valuable to millennials
and the deeper personal outcomes they desire from each experience type, a questionnaire was
devised to assess their behaviors and beliefs on this matter. The collected data was analyzed
through descriptive statistics.
Findings show that millennials exhibit a strong overall preference for experiential purchases
over material ones. Yet, esthetic experiences are deemed less relevant than clothes and
accessories or even electronic devices, which suggests that not all types of leisure experiences
are preferred to material possessions. Additionally, it became evident that millennials desire
experiences that correspond to their distinct emotional expectations and that are experientially
diverse.
Development of a Osirix plug-in for non-gaussian diffusion MRI data: application to Breast
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer and is the second type of
cancer that is the most common among women, causing the death of 1500 women, every
year, in Portugal. Over the past decades, with the improvement of imaging techniques
and therapeutics, breast cancer mortality rate has been decreasing substantially. One of
the imaging techniques used is diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), which is the magnetic
resonance imaging method that is the most sensitive in detecting invasive breast cancer.
There are several extensions of this technique that can be based on the premise that the
environment is not homogeneous (non-Gaussian models).
The non-Gaussian models, take into account the presence of barriers and compartments
that restrict the water molecules movement in the biological tissues, allowing the
distinction between malignant and benign lesions in DWI. Taking into account that
diffusion-weighted imaging is a non invasive method, the diagnosis through the application
of these models can become an alternative to biopsy.
The main goal of this dissertation was the development of a OsiriX plug-in that
performs the non-Gaussian diffusion analysis of DWI in magnetic resonance imaging
data. Five non-Gaussian diffusion models were implemented in the application: diffusion
kurtosis imaging, intravoxel incoherent motion, gamma distribution, truncated and
stretched-exponential. Parametric maps and region-of interest (ROI) parametric values
were obtained for each model. In order to fit the various non-Gaussian diffusion models,
the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used. This algorithm finds coefficients x to
best fit the nonlinear function to the data. The x coefficients results in parametric maps
that are able to identify the tumour and also distinguish between malignant and benign
lesions provided a comparison with the literature. During the application development,
these functionalities were also used to study the dependence of fitted parameters on the
number of b-values used and on the image noise.
An interface was developed with Objective-C on Xcode for OsiriX where the user gets
to choose from five diffusion models in order to obtain parameric maps or values. It also
informs on the goodness of fit and it provides fitting plots of the data. The references of
the models and extra information are also available in an help button.
Finally, the application was tested successfully with breast DWI images of benign and malignant tumors
