    Singular del Pezzo fibrations and birational rigidity

    A known conjecture of Grinenko in birational geometry asserts that a Mori fibre space with the structure of del Pezzo fibration of low degree is birationally rigid if and only if its anticanonical class is an interior point in the cone of mobile divisors. The conjecture is proved to be true for smooth models (with a generality assumption for degree 3). It is speculated that the conjecture holds for, at least, Gorenstein models in degree 1 and 2. In this article, I present a (Gorenstein) counterexample in degree 2 to this conjecture.Comment: This is essentially a more detailed version of the second section of arXiv:1310.5548.     Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry for toric stacks

    Using the mirror theorem [CCIT15], we give a Landau-Ginzburg mirror description for the big equivariant quantum cohomology of toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. More precisely, we prove that the big equivariant quantum D-module of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack is isomorphic to the Saito structure associated to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. We give a GKZ-style presentation of the quantum D-module, and a combinatorial description of quantum cohomology as a quantum Stanley-Reisner ring. We establish the convergence of the mirror isomorphism and of quantum cohomology in the big and equivariant setting

    Two new pulsating low-mass pre-white dwarfs or SX Phenix stars?*

    Context. The discovery of pulsations in low-mass stars opens an opportunity for probing their interiors and to determine their evolution, by employing the tools of asteroseismology. Aims. We aim to analyze high-speed photometry of SDSSJ145847.02++070754.46 and SDSSJ173001.94++070600.25 and discover brightness variabilities. In order to locate these stars in the TeffloggT_{\rm eff} - \log g diagram we fit optical spectra (SDSS) with synthetic non-magnetic spectra derived from model atmospheres. Methods. To carry out this study, we used the photometric data obtained by us for these stars with the 2.15m telescope at CASLEO, Argentina. We analyzed their light curves and we apply the Discrete Fourier Transform to determine the pulsation frequencies. Finally, we compare both stars in the TeffloggT_{\rm eff} - \log g diagram, with known two pre-white dwarfs, seven pulsating pre-ELM white dwarf stars, δ\delta Scuti and SX Phe stars. Results. We report the discovery of pulsations in SDSSJ145847.02++070754.46 and SDSSJ173001.94++070600.25. We determine their effective temperature and surface gravity to be TeffT_{\rm eff} = 7 972 ±\pm 200 K, logg\log g = 4.25 ±\pm 0.5 and TeffT_{\rm eff} = 7 925 ±\pm 200 K, logg\log g = 4.25 ±\pm 0.5, respectively. With these parameters these new pulsating low-mass stars can be identified with either ELM white dwarfs (with ~ 0.17 Mo) or more massive SX Phe stars. We identified pulsation periods of 3 278.7 and 1 633.9 s for SDSSJ145847.02++070754.46 and a pulsation period of 3 367.1 s for SDSSJ173001.94++070600.25. These two new objects together with those of Maxted et al. (2013, 2014) indicate the possible existence of a new instability domain towards the late stages of evolution of low-mass white dwarf stars, although their identification with SX Phe stars cannot be discarded.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A

    Effect of impurities on quasi-2D quantum antiferromagnet

    We have studied the static and dynamic properties of quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets (AF) diluted with spinless impurities using spin-wave theory and TT-matrix approximation. We show that the spectrum of a 2D AF at long wavelengths is overdamped at arbitrary concentration of spinless impurities. The scattering leads to a new length scale /aeπ/4x\ell/a \sim e^{\pi/4x}, xx being impurity concentration and aa the lattice spacing, beyond which the influence of impurities on the spectrum is dominant. Although the dynamical properties are significantly modified we show that 2D is not the lower critical dimension for this problem. Thus, in low-dimensional systems with disorder the connection between static and dynamic quantities is not straightforward. Our results are in quantitative agreement with the recent Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data for S=1/2S=1/2, S=1, and S=5/2S=5/2.     The impact of cirrus clouds on tropical troposphere-to-stratosphere transport

    International audienceAlthough it is well known that air enters the stratosphere preferentially through upwelling in the tropics, the exact mechanisms of troposphere-to-stratosphere transport (TST) are still unknown. Previously proposed mechanisms have been found either to be too slow (e.g., clear sky upwelling) to provide agreement with in situ tracer measurements, or to be insufficient in mass flux to act as a major supply for the Brewer-Dobson circulation (e.g., convective overshooting). In this study we evaluate whether the lofting of air via cirrus cloud-radiation interaction might offer an alternative path for TST, which is responsible for a significant fraction of the observed air mass transport. We find that a combination of deep convection and subsequent upwelling associated with cirrus clouds and clear sky can explain the supply of air for the Brewer-Dobson circulation. Thus, upwelling associated with cirrus clouds offers a mechanism for the missing second stage, which links the first stage of TST, deep convection, to the third stage, the Brewer-Dobson circulation

    High Performance Compostable Biocomposites Based on Bacterial Polyesters Suitable For Injection Molding and Blow Extrusion

    This work deals with the design, preparation and characterization of composites based on Poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyvalerate] and lignocellulosic filler suitable for the production of compostable and biodegradable biocomposites that mimic the thermo-mechanical and processing characteristics commonly found in those polymeric materials specially designed for injection molding and blow extrusion. The best formulation in terms of processability, thermo-mechanical properties and biodegradation behavior under mature compost conditions was the biocomposite that contained 42.8 % by wt. of Poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyvalerate] as the major component, 5 % by wt. of lignocellulosic filler, 10 % by wt. of tributyl citrate plasticizer, 30 % by wt. of Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), 10 % by wt. of Poly(vinyl acetate), 0.2 % by wt. of Joncryl ADR-4368C a chain extender, 1 % by wt. of a primary antioxidant mix, and 1 % by wt. of nucleating agents

    Drained cyclic capacity of plate anchors in dense sand:Experimental and theoretical observations

    This paper provides experimental evidence that shows that the drained cyclic capacity of a plate anchor in dry dense sand may be higher than the equivalent monotonic capacity. The experimental data show that when cyclic loading is low relative to the monotonic capacity, increases in the eventual capacity are observed; when the magnitudes of the cyclic loads are closer to the monotonic capacity, no increases in capacity are observed. These responses are explained in the paper using an elasto-plastic macro-element model extended with expandable bounding and memory surfaces that address the increase in strength or stiffness caused by changes in soil density and fabric when the anchor is subject to cyclic loading in dense sand. </jats:p

    Rare human skin infection with Corynebacterium ulcerans: transmission by a domestic cat

    Corynebacterium ulcerans is mainly known for its ability to cause animal infections. Some strains of C. ulcerans produce diphtheria toxin, which can cause life-threatening cardiopathies and neuropathies in humans. Human cutaneous C. ulcerans infection is a very rare disease that mimics classical cutaneous diphtheria. We present a very rare case of a C. ulcerans skin infection caused by a non-diphtheria toxin-producing strain of C. ulcerans that resolved after 3weeks of therapy with amoxicillin-clavulanate. A pet cat was the probable source of infection. The presence of C. ulcerans in the mouth of the cat was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene analysis and the API Coryne system. In cases of human infection with potentially toxigenic corynebacteria, it is important to determine the species and examine the isolate for diphtheria toxin production. If toxigenicity is present, diphtheria antitoxin should be administered immediately. Carriers and potential infectious sources of C. ulcerans include not only domestic livestock but also pet animals.
