Characterizing high energy explosive eruptions at Stromboli volcano using multidisciplinary data: An example from the 9 January 2005 explosion
Stromboli is well known for its persistent, normal explosive activity, consisting of intermittent, mild to
moderate, Strombolian explosions that typically occur every 10â20 min. All tephras erupted during this
activity usually fall back into the crater terrace, and consist of volatile-poor scoriae fed by Highly Porphyritic
(HP) magma. More occasionally, large explosions or âparoxysmsâ eject a greater quantity of tephra, mainly
consisting of HP scoriae and pumice clasts of Low Porphyritic (LP) magma, but also including large lithic
blocks. In addition to this activity, between 2004 and 2006 high energy explosions, displaying an
intermediate eruptive style between that of normal and paroxysmal explosions in terms of column height,
duration and tephra dispersal, were observed to occur at a frequency of one to eight events per year. While
many volcanological, geochemical and geophysical studies have focused in the last few years on the two endmembers
of activity, i.e. normal or paroxysmal, a detailed investigation on these intermediate types of events
has not been carried out yet. Here we report of a study on the 9 January 2005 explosion, one of the high
energy explosions during which the main fountaining phase lasted nearly a minute causing ejection of coarse
bombs up to a height of 120 m, and of ash and lapilli to N200 m. An accompanying ash plume rose up to
500 m at the end of the explosion. We present a multidisciplinary approach that integrates the results from
analysis of live-camera images with compositional and textural characterization of the erupted products.
Major element composition of glassy groundmass and 3D views of textures in the erupted scoriae support
the hypothesis based on volcanological observations that this explosion falls between normal and
paroxysmal activity, for which we use the term âintermediateâ. By comparing the video-camera images of
the 9 January 2005 explosion with volcanological features of other high energy explosions that occurred at
Stromboli between June 2004 and October 2006, we find that three additional events can be considered
intermediate explosions, suggesting that this type of activity may be fairly common on this volcano. The
results of this study, although preliminary given our limited dataset, clearly indicate that the methodology
used here can be successfully applied to better define the range of eruptive styles typifying the normal
explosive activity, potentially improving our capability of eruption forecasting and assessing volcanic hazard
at Stromboli
The relevance of sperm morphology in male infertility
This brief report concerns the role of human sperm morphology assessment in different fields of male infertility: basic research, genetics, assisted reproduction technologies, oxidative stress. One of the best methods in studying sperm morphology is transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that enables defining the concept of sperm pathology and classifying alterations in non-systematic and systematic. Non-systematic sperm defects affect head and tail in variable ratio, whereas the rare systematic defects are characterized by a particular anomaly that marks most sperm of an ejaculate. TEM analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization represent outstanding methods in the study of sperm morphology and cytogenetic in patients with altered karyotype characterizing their semen quality before intracytoplasmic sperm injection. In recent years, the genetic investigations on systematic sperm defects, made extraordinary progress identifying candidate genes whose mutations induce morphological sperm anomalies. The question if sperm morphology has an impact on assisted fertilization outcome is debated. Nowadays, oxidative stress represents one of the most important causes of altered sperm morphology and function and can be analyzed from two points of view: 1) spermatozoa with cytoplasmic residue produce reactive oxygen species, 2) the pathologies with inflammatory/oxidative stress background cause morphological alterations. Finally, sperm morphology is also considered an important endpoint in in vitro experiments where toxic substances, drugs, antioxidants are tested. We think that the field of sperm morphology is far from being exhausted and needs other research. This parameter can be still considered a valuable indicator of sperm dysfunction both in basic and clinical research
The HERMES Solar Atlas and the spectroscopic analysis of the seismic solar analogue KIC3241581
Solar-analog stars provide an excellent opportunity to study the Sun's
evolution, i.e. the changes with time in stellar structure, activity, or
rotation for solar-like stars. The unparalleled photometric data from the NASA
space telescope Kepler allows us to study and characterise solar-like stars
through asteroseismology. We aim to spectroscopically investigate the
fundamental parameter and chromospheric activity of solar analogues and twins,
based on observations obtained with the HERMES spectrograph and combine them
with asteroseismology. Therefore, we need to build a solar atlas for the
spectrograph, to provide accurate calibrations of the spectroscopically
determined abundances of solar and late type stars observed with this
instrument and thus perform differential spectral comparisons. We acquire
high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectroscopy to construct three solar
reference spectra by observing the reflected light of Vesta and Victoria
asteroids and Europa (100<S/N<450) with the \Hermes spectrograph. We then
observe the Kepler solar analog KIC3241581 (S/N~170). We constructed three
solar spectrum atlases from 385 to 900 nm obtained with the Hermes spectrograph
from observations of two bright asteroids and Europa. A comparison between our
solar spectra atlas to the Kurucz and HARPS solar spectrum shows an excellent
agreement. KIC3241581 was found to be a long-periodic binary system. The
fundamental parameter for the stellar primary component are Teff=5689+/-11K,
logg=4.385+/-0.005, [Fe/H]=+0.22+/-0.01, being in agreement with the published
global seismic values confirming its status of solar analogue. KIC 3241581 is a
metal rich solar analogue with a solar-like activity level in a binary system
of unknown period. The chromospheric activity level is compatible to the solar

Magnetic variability in the young solar analog KIC 10644253: Observations from the Kepler satellite and the HERMES spectrograph
The continuous photometric observations collected by the Kepler satellite
over 4 years provide a whelm of data with an unequalled quantity and quality
for the study of stellar evolution of more than 200000 stars. Moreover, the
length of the dataset provide a unique source of information to detect magnetic
activity and associated temporal variability in the acoustic oscillations. In
this regards, the Kepler mission was awaited with great expectation. The search
for the signature of magnetic activity variability in solar-like pulsations
still remained unfruitful more than 2 years after the end of the nominal
mission. Here, however, we report the discovery of temporal variability in the
low-degree acoustic frequencies of the young (1 Gyr-old) solar analog KIC
10644253 with a modulation of about 1.5 years with significant temporal
variations along the duration of the Kepler observations. The variations are in
agreement with the derived photometric activity. The frequency shifts extracted
for KIC 10644253 are shown to result from the same physical mechanisms involved
in the inner sub-surface layers as in the Sun. In parallel, a detailed
spectroscopic analysis of KIC 10644253 is performed based on complementary
ground-based, high-resolution observations collected by the HERMES instrument
mounted on the MERCATOR telescope. Its lithium abundance and chromospheric
activity S-index confirm that KIC 10644253 is a young and more active star than

Limits on surface gravities of Kepler planet-candidate host stars from non-detection of solar-like oscillations
We present a novel method for estimating lower-limit surface gravities log g
of Kepler targets whose data do not allow the detection of solar-like
oscillations. The method is tested using an ensemble of solar-type stars
observed in the context of the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium. We then
proceed to estimate lower-limit log g for a cohort of Kepler solar-type
planet-candidate host stars with no detected oscillations. Limits on
fundamental stellar properties, as provided by this work, are likely to be
useful in the characterization of the corresponding candidate planetary
systems. Furthermore, an important byproduct of the current work is the
confirmation that amplitudes of solar-like oscillations are suppressed in stars

F4-Neuroprostane Effects on Human Sperm
Swim-up selected human sperm were incubated with 7 ng F4-neuroprostanes (F4-NeuroPs) for 2 and 4 h. Sperm motility and membrane mitochondrial potential (MMP) were evaluated. The percentage of reacted acrosome was assessed by pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA). Chromatin integrity was detected using the acridine orange (AO) assay and localization of the ryanodine receptor was performed by immunofluorescence analysis. Sperm progressive motility (p = 0.02) and the percentage of sperm showing a strong MMP signal (p = 0.012) significantly increased after 2 h F4-NeuroP incubation compared to control samples. The AO assay did not show differences in the percentage of sperm with dsDNA between treated or control samples. Meanwhile, a significantly higher number of sperm with reacted acrosomes was highlighted by PSA localization after 4 h F4-NeuroP incubation. Finally, using an anti-ryanodine antibody, the immunofluorescence signal was differentially distributed at 2 and 4 h: a strong signal was evident in the midpiece and postacrosomal sheath (70% of sperm) at 2 h, whereas a dotted one appeared at 4 h (53% of sperm). A defined concentration of F4-NeuroPs in seminal fluid may induce sperm capacitation via channel ions present in sperm cells, representing an aid during in vitro sperm preparation that may increase the positive outcome of assisted fertilization
Micrometeoroid and Lunar Secondary Ejecta Flux Measurements: Comparison of Three Acoustic Systems
This report examines the inherent capability of three large-area acoustic sensor systems and their applicability for micrometeoroids (MM) and lunar secondary ejecta (SE) detection and characterization for future lunar exploration activities. Discussion is limited to instruments that can be fabricated and deployed with low resource requirements. Previously deployed impact detection probes typically have instrumented capture areas less than 0.2 square meters. Since the particle flux decreases rapidly with increased particle size, such small-area sensors rarely encounter particles in the size range above 50 microns, and even their sampling the population above 10 microns is typically limited. Characterizing the sparse dust population in the size range above 50 microns requires a very large-area capture instrument. However it is also important that such an instrument simultaneously measures the population of the smaller particles, so as to provide a complete instantaneous snapshot of the population. For lunar or planetary surface studies, the system constraints are significant. The instrument must be as large as possible to sample the population of the largest MM. This is needed to reliably assess the particle impact risks and to develop cost-effective shielding designs for habitats, astronauts, and critical instrument. The instrument should also have very high sensitivity to measure the flux of small and slow SE particles. is the SE environment is currently poorly characterized, and possess a contamination risk to machinery and personnel involved in exploration. Deployment also requires that the instrument add very little additional mass to the spacecraft. Three acoustic systems are being explored for this application
Effects and Mechanisms Activated by Treatment with Cationic, Anionic and Zwitterionic Liposomes on an In Vitro Model of Porcine Pre-Pubertal Sertoli Cells
: Liposomes have been successfully used as drug-delivery vehicles, but there are no clinical studies on improved fertility and the few reported experimental studies have been performed in animal models far from humans. The aim of this paper was to study the effects of treatment with cationic, anionic and zwitterionic liposomes on our superior mammalian model of porcine prepubertal Sertoli cells (SCs) to find a carrier of in vitro test drugs for SCs. Porcine pre-pubertal SCs cultures were incubated with different liposomes. Viability, apoptosis/necrosis status (Annexin-V/Propidium iodide assay), immunolocalisation of ÎČ-actin, vimentin, the phosphorylated form of AMP-activated protein Kinase (AMPK)α and cell ultrastructure (Transmission Electron Microscopy, TEM) were analysed. Zwitterionic liposomes did not determine changes in the cell cytoplasm. The incubation with anionic and cationic liposomes modified the distribution of actin and vimentin filaments and increased the levels of the phosphorylated form of AMPKα. The Annexin/Propidium Iodide assay suggested an increase in apoptosis. TEM analysis highlighted a cytoplasmic vacuolisation. In conclusion, these preliminary data indicated that zwitterionic liposomes were the best carrier to use in an in vitro study of SCs to understand the effects of molecules or drugs that could have a clinical application in the treatment of certain forms of male infertility
The biosocial event : responding to innovation in the life sciences
Innovation in the life sciences calls for reflection on how sociologies separate and relate life processes and social processes. To this end we introduce the concept of the âbiosocial eventâ. Some life processes and social processes have more mutual relevance than others. Some of these relationships are more negotiable than others. We show that levels of relevance and negotiability are not static but can change within existing relationships. Such changes, or biosocial events, lie at the heart of much unplanned biosocial novelty and much deliberate innovation. We illustrate and explore the concept through two examples â meningitis infection and epidemic, and the use of sonic âteen deterrentsâ in urban settings. We then consider its value in developing sociological practice oriented to critically constructive engagement with innovation in the life sciences
