    A flowing plasma model to describe drift waves in a cylindrical helicon discharge

    A two-fluid model developed originally to describe wave oscillations in the vacuum arc centrifuge, a cylindrical, rapidly rotating, low temperature and confined plasma column, is applied to interpret plasma oscillations in a RF generated linear magnetised plasma (WOMBAT), with similar density and field strength. Compared to typical centrifuge plasmas, WOMBAT plasmas have slower normalised rotation frequency, lower temperature and lower axial velocity. Despite these differences, the two-fluid model provides a consistent description of the WOMBAT plasma configuration and yields qualitative agreement between measured and predicted wave oscillation frequencies with axial field strength. In addition, the radial profile of the density perturbation predicted by this model is consistent with the data. Parameter scans show that the dispersion curve is sensitive to the axial field strength and the electron temperature, and the dependence of oscillation frequency with electron temperature matches the experiment. These results consolidate earlier claims that the density and floating potential oscillations are a resistive drift mode, driven by the density gradient. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed physics model of flowing plasmas in the diffusion region away from the RF source. Possible extensions to the model, including temperature non-uniformity and magnetic field oscillations, are also discussed

    The Unionid Mussel Fauna of Pymatuning Creek in Ashtabula County, Ohio, Including the Federally Endangered Clubshell (Pleurobema clava)

    Author Institution: Biology Department, Hiram CollegeA survey of union ids in Pymatuning Creek in Ashtabula County, OH, was conducted to assess the species present and their relative abundances, with particular attention to the federally endangered Clubshell (Pleurobema clava). Sampling the stream bed by hand at 18 locations produced 3,464 living and 501 dead unionids comprising 11 different species. At each site, data were collected for substrata types, and water depth, speed, temperature, pH, and oxygen concentration were measured. The mussel fauna consisted of two dominant species (JElliptio dilatata and Amblema plicata), three subdominants (Lasmigona complanata, Anodonta grandis grandis, and Ixi tufts His radiata luteola), and six uncommon species (Pleurobema clava, Lasmigona costata, Lasmigona compressa, Anodontoides ferussacianus, Anodonta imbecillis, and Villosa iris iris), listed in order of abundance. Living specimens of P. clava were found in habitats that were characterized by shallow water, good oxygenation, little organic debris, moderate current, and substrata consisting mostly of sand with fine pebbles. The relative abundance of mussels averaged 1.783 mussels found per minute of search time and ranged from 0.225 to 4.390, while previous studies of the Cuyahoga River yielded an average relative abundance of 0.469 mussels per minute of searching. The present survey indicates that Pymatuning Creek supports a large and vigorous population of unionids, and that P. clava comprises a small but healthy element of that fauna and may constitute Ohio's largest population of this endangered species

    A facial expression for anxiety.

    Anxiety and fear are often confounded in discussions of human emotions. However, studies of rodent defensive reactions under naturalistic conditions suggest anxiety is functionally distinct from fear. Unambiguous threats, such as predators, elicit flight from rodents (if an escape-route is available), whereas ambiguous threats (e.g., the odor of a predator) elicit risk assessment behavior, which is associated with anxiety as it is preferentially modulated by anti-anxiety drugs. However, without human evidence, it would be premature to assume that rodent-based psychological models are valid for humans. We tested the human validity of the risk assessment explanation for anxiety by presenting 8 volunteers with emotive scenarios and asking them to pose facial expressions. Photographs and videos of these expressions were shown to 40 participants who matched them to the scenarios and labeled each expression. Scenarios describing ambiguous threats were preferentially matched to the facial expression posed in response to the same scenario type. This expression consisted of two plausible environmental-scanning behaviors (eye darts and head swivels) and was labeled as anxiety, not fear. The facial expression elicited by unambiguous threat scenarios was labeled as fear. The emotion labels generated were then presented to another 18 participants who matched them back to photographs of the facial expressions. This back-matching of labels to faces also linked anxiety to the environmental-scanning face rather than fear face. Results therefore suggest that anxiety produces a distinct facial expression and that it has adaptive value in situations that are ambiguously threatening, supporting a functional, risk-assessing explanation for human anxiet

    Individual patient data meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of community occupational therapy for stroke patients

    <p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> Trials of occupational therapy for stroke patients living in the community have varied in their findings. It is unclear why these discrepancies have occurred.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> Trials were identified from searches of the Cochrane Library and other sources. The primary outcome measure was the Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living (NEADL) score at the end of intervention. Secondary outcome measures included the Barthel Index or the Rivermead ADL (Personal ADL), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), Nottingham Leisure Questionnaire (NLQ), and death. Data were analyzed using linear or logistic regression with a random effect for trial and adjustment for age, gender, baseline dependency, and method of follow-up. Subgroup analyses compared any occupational therapy intervention with control.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> We included 8 single-blind randomized controlled trials incorporating 1143 patients. Occupational therapy was associated with higher NEADL scores at the end of intervention (weighted mean difference [WMD], 1.30 points, 95% confidence intervals [CI], 0.47 to 2.13) and higher leisure scores at the end of intervention (WMD, 1.51 points; 95% CI, 0.24 to 2.79). Occupational therapy emphasizing activities of daily living (ADL) was associated with improved end of intervention NEADL (WMD, 1.61 points; 95% CI, 0.72 to 2.49) and personal activities of daily living (odds ratio [OR], 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46 to 0.91), but not NLQ. Leisure-based occupational therapy improved end of intervention NLQ (WMD, 1.96 points; 95% CI, 0.27 to 3.66) but not NEADL or PADL.</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> Community occupational therapy significantly improved personal and extended activities of daily living and leisure activity in patients with stroke. Better outcomes were found with targeted interventions.</p&gt

    Periodic formation and propagation of double layers in the expanding chamber of an inductive discharge operating in Ar/SF₆ mixtures

    It has previously been shown [Tuszewski et al., Plasma Sources Sci. Technol.12, 396 (2003)] that inductive discharges in electronegative gases are subject to two types of instability: the sourceinstability related to the E to H transition and a transport instability, occurring downstream when an expanding chamber is present. These two types of instability are observed in our “helicon” reactor operated without a static magnetic field in low-pressure Ar∕SF6 mixtures. Temporally and spatially resolved measurements show that, in our experiment, the downstream instability is a periodic formation and propagation of a double layer. The double layer is born at the end of the source tube and propagates slowly to the end of the expansion region with a velocity of 150ms⁻¹

    Worthwhile work? Childcare, feminist ethics and cooperative research practices

    Interdisciplinary research collaborations are often encouraged within higher education while the practicalities of such collaborations are glossed over. This project specifically addresses the praxis of research collaborations, exploring how feminist academics within different countries and disciplines came together to explore their mutual concern about the perceived worth and well-being of early childhood practitioners. Engaging in a formal methodological dialogue over eight months, seven academics discussed, analysed and dissected their different investments in research methods and intents, with the aim of agreeing to a common methodological framework. Unexpectedly, what emerged was not a product, but a process. We argue that this process offers much to those seeking deep collaboration in and through shared research. Building on a collective research interest, we found ourselves in a process of becoming, germinating the seed of a transnational research cooperative, based on trust and mutual respect, rather than the arid methodological contract originally envisioned
