Trade Protection in the New Millennium: The Ascendancy of Antidumping Measures

    Get PDF
This article will first examine why the antidumping law will become the weapon of choice for import protection in the new millennium. It then will provide an overview of the antidumping regulatory regime, and the controversy it has engendered. Finally this article will discuss the compli- ance measures that global exporters should consider in order to avoid anti- dumping liability in the future

Avatars and empathy: The use of video games to affect prejudicial evaluations of African Americans

This research sought to test the relation between video game avatars (online representations of the self), empathy, social dominance orientation, and prejudice. By having participants imagine playing in a game as an avatar I sought to test three hypotheses. Th first hypothesis proposed that that participants would be more inclined to support policies regarding a specific racial group when imagining play as an avatar representing that group. The second hypothesis proposed that empathy would influence the connection between the avatar and participant race variables. The third, which was split into three parts, tested for a negative correlation between prejudice and empathy, whether high levels of social dominance would suppress the beneficial effects of the counter-race avatar (specifically for White participants), and whether prejudicial judgments would be higher for participants high in social dominance orientation regardless of the race of participant or avatar condition. Participant prejudice and empathy were assessed with an empathy test from DeWall and Baumeister (2006) and the Social Dominance Orientation Scale. The hypothesis that high levels of social dominance would suppress the effect of the counter-race avatar was partially supported for positive assessments of race when controlling for social dominance orientation. Additionally, it was expected that White participants high in empathy would have stronger effects than White participants low in empathy or compared to participants of color and that social dominance orientation (SDO) would be negatively correlated with empathy. Results for empathy were not supported, however, the results for the association of SDO and prejudice were

Chasing Stars: Racial Tasking of Recruiting Responsibilities among Power-5 Football Coaches

During the 2022 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college football season, eight of the 65 Power-5 head coaches were Black. The racial composition of assistant coaches, however, was nearly 50% Black and 50% White. While the head coach of a Power-5 football team serves as the leader of the program, the 10 assistant coaches permitted by the NCAA oversee a variety of critical roles; the most valuable of which is recruiting. This study extends previous work by examining the racial composition of Power-5 football coaching staffs and recruiting responsibilities through the lens of racial tasking. An analysis of Power-5 football recruiting classes from 2019 and 2020 illustrates that assistant coaches are tasked with recruiting recruits racially similar to themselves 58% of the time. Furthermore, Black assistant coaches are disproportionately tasked with recruiting Black recruits and higher rated recruits (i.e., five- and four-star) compared to their White counterparts. We contend such racialized responsibilities and expectations may affect opportunities for advancement among Black assistant coaches

Small conductance calcium-activated potassium current is important in transmural repolarization of failing human ventricles

BACKGROUND: The transmural distribution of apamin-sensitive small conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) (SK) current (IKAS) in failing human ventricles remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: We optically mapped left ventricular wedge preparations from 12 failing native hearts and 2 rejected cardiac allografts explanted during transplant surgery. We determined transmural action potential duration (APD) before and after 100 nmol/L apamin administration in all wedges and after sequential administration of apamin, chromanol, and E4031 in 4 wedges. Apamin prolonged APD from 363 ms (95% confidence interval [CI], 341-385) to 409 (95% CI, 385-434; P<0.001) in all hearts, and reduced the transmural conduction velocity from 36 cm/s (95% CI, 30-42) to 32 cm/s (95% CI, 27-37; P=0.001) in 12 native failing hearts at 1000 ms pacing cycle length (PCL). The percent APD prolongation is negatively correlated with baseline APD and positively correlated with PCL. Only 1 wedge had M-cell islands. The percentages of APD prolongation in the last 4 hearts at 2000 ms PCL after apamin, chromanol, and E4031 were 9.1% (95% CI, 3.9-14.2), 17.3% (95% CI, 3.1-31.5), and 35.9% (95% CI, 15.7-56.1), respectively. Immunohistochemical staining of subtype 2 of SK protein showed increased expression in intercalated discs of myocytes. CONCLUSIONS: SK current is important in the transmural repolarization in failing human ventricles. The magnitude of IKAS is positively correlated with the PCL, but negatively correlated with APD when PCL is fixed. There is abundant subtype 2 of SK protein in the intercalated discs of myocytes

Mechanical properties of tungsten following rhenium ion and helium plasma exposure

Mechanical properties of Tungsten (W) samples irradiated with 2 MeV Rhenium (Re) ions and helium (He) plasma were investigated using nanoindentation. It was found that there was an increase in hardness for all samples following separate irradiation with both Re ion and He plasma. A slight increase in hardness was obtained for combined exposures. A comparable increase in hardness was observed for a pure He plasma with a sample temperature of 473 K and 1273 K. Optical interferometry was employed to compare surface modification of the samples. Grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering confirmed He nano-bubble formation of approximately 1 nm diameter in the higher temperature sample, which was not observed with samples at the lower temperaturesPK, CC and JB acknowledge support from the Future Fellowship Scheme of the Australian Research Council (FT120100289, FT100100825 and FT130101355).
