Mario Monicelli’s La grande guerra is the first Italian film to approach the delicate matter (In Italy) of the First World War. Until 1959, the year the film was made, First World War had been a subject excluded from the silver screen. The few films made showed an idilic vision of the war: the Italian soldier as a hero and Italy as a great power. Monicelli’s film caused a big scandal during the sixties: the first time such a tragic subject was made comic material. The film offers a magnificent representation of the Italian society and the moral and living conditions of the soldiers were in. It’s a essay about the war, it’s absurdity, horror and fear. A war which caused a moral wound in the Italian population, a war noone spoke aloud about, until this film was released
The working women’s image during the first post war years is analyzed, from 1945 until the arrival of television (1954) as shown in the Italian cinematographic news reels. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the news featuring working women is made, and the types of professional activities which are normally linked to them and they way they are portrayed are established. This visual representation is contextualized in the legal framework related to the working situation, created by the government of the chosen period. This way, we can compare the image offered by the cinematographic news with the reality of the working Italian women. It is shown that the period’s cinema offered an idealized vision of the women’s working conditions and granted women a secondary role inside the news‘s priorities.

ABSTRACT: The arrival of democracy in Italy beginning in 1946 brought with it the reconstruction of education based on the new principles of equality and liberty. However, the main values and models in schools were still those of fascism, in which education was gender-based: girls were taught to become homemakers and men were prepared for the workplace. This roledifferentiation of roles that permeated all levels of education is reflected in cinema newsreels produced between 1946 and 1953. These reels show the limited educational and academic levels reached by Italian women in those years
