FullSWOF_Paral: Comparison of two parallelization strategies (MPI and SKELGIS) on a software designed for hydrology applications

In this paper, we perform a comparison of two approaches for the parallelization of an existing, free software, FullSWOF 2D (http://www. univ-orleans.fr/mapmo/soft/FullSWOF/ that solves shallow water equations for applications in hydrology) based on a domain decomposition strategy. The first approach is based on the classical MPI library while the second approach uses Parallel Algorithmic Skeletons and more precisely a library named SkelGIS (Skeletons for Geographical Information Systems). The first results presented in this article show that the two approaches are similar in terms of performance and scalability. The two implementation strategies are however very different and we discuss the advantages of each one.Comment: 27 page

L’ethnographie romaine et ses primitifs : les paradoxes de la « préhistoire » au présent

Les excursus ethnographiques des historiens et des encyclopédistes romains sur les peuples prépolitiques contemporains laissent transparaître des schémas implicites du développement de l’humanité comme processus de socialisation, de l’état de nature à une société de cultus. Les phénomènes « primitifs » des espaces voisins donnent une impression d’éloignement temporel ; ils font apparaître les paradoxes d’une préhistoire au présent, qui rend sensible le rôle de la conquête romaine dans la propagation de la culture la plus élevée, tout en révélant les effets pervers de la civilisation. Le malaise des auteurs romains lorsqu’ils abordent la « préhistoire » romaine trahit leur répugnance à concevoir l’histoire de Rome autrement que comme une dynamique d’acculturation.Ethnographic excursuses by the Roman historians and encyclopedists about the contemporary prepolitical peoples reveal implicit schemata of mankind’s development as a socializing process from the state of nature to a cultus society. Insertion of a Bulky Rhodium Complex into a DNA Cytosine−Cytosine Mismatch: An NMR Solution Study

The bulky octahedral complex Rh(bpy)_2chrysi^(3+) (chrysi = 5,6-chrysenequinonediimine) binds single-base mismatches in a DNA duplex with micromolar binding affinities and high selectivity. Here we present an NMR solution study to characterize the binding mode of this bulky metal complex with its target CC mismatch in the oligonucleotide duplex (5‘-CGGACTCCG-3‘)_2. Both NOESY and COSY studies indicate that Rh(bpy)_2chrysi^(3+) inserts deeply in the DNA at the mismatch site via the minor groove and with ejection of both destabilized cytosines into the opposite major groove. The insertion only minimally distorts the conformation of the oligonucleotide local to the binding site. Both flanking, well-matched base pairs remain tightly hydrogen-bonded to each other, and 2D DQF-COSY experiments indicate that all sugars maintain their original C_2‘-endo conformation. Remarkably, ^(31)P NMR reveals that opening of the phosphate angles from a B_I to a B_(II) conformation is sufficient for insertion of the bulky metal complex. These results corroborate those obtained crystallographically and, importantly, provide structural evidence for this specific insertion mode in solution

Soft gamma-ray galactic ridge emission as unveiled by SPI aboard INTEGRAL

The origin of the soft gamma-ray (200 keV - 1 MeV) galactic ridge emission is one of the long-standing mysteries in the field of high-energy astrophysics. Population studies at lower energies have shown that emission from accreting compact objects gradually recedes in this domain, leaving place to another source of gamma-ray emission that is characterised by a hard power-law spectrum extending from 100 keV up to 100 MeV The nature of this hard component has remained so far elusive, partly due to the lack of sufficiently sensitive imaging telescopes that would be able to unveil the spatial distribution of the emission. The SPI telescope aboard INTEGRAL allows now for the first time the simultaneous imaging of diffuse and point-like emission in the soft gamma-ray regime. We present here all-sky images of the soft gamma-ray continuum emission that clearly reveal the morphology of the different emission components. We discuss the implications of our results on the nature of underlying emission processes and we put our results in perspective of GLAST studies of diffuse galactic continuum emission
