ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATORS’ PERCEPTIONS OF DISCIPLINE POLICIES AND THE OVERREPRESENTATION OF DISCIPLINE OUTCOMES IN URBAN SETTINGS

Since the formation of schools, schools have developed ways of understanding discipline and ensuring a safe and orderly environment. Governmental personnel began to influence local school policies beginning in 1989, with United States President Ronald Reagan’s War on Drugs campaign. This led to the creation and development of zero-tolerance policies. School districts implemented zero-tolerance policies, which helped lead to the overrepresentation of discipline outcomes (i.e., punishment) among certain demographics. Following the Critical Race Theory theoretical framework, I interviewed 12 participants to determine their perceptions of discipline policies and the overrepresentation of discipline outcomes in urban settings. My participants included elementary principals and teachers across two large urban school districts across Tennessee. After interviewing 12 participants, I determined two things: elementary school teachers perceived the success of discipline practices and outcomes based on support from their administrators and whether teachers believed schools were considered safe, and elementary school principals perceived successful discipline policies and their role in discipline as their ability to support students during their school career and to give support to teachers so that teachers could support students. From the teachers’ perspective, I determined that teachers viewed successful discipline policies depending on support provided by administrators and a safe environment. From the principals’ perspective, I determined that principals viewed successful discipline policies depending on their ability to support students and to support teachers

The dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII and its effect on the econmoy sic], political landscape, and social instability in Tudor England that led to the creation of the poor laws

Before the reformation and the schism of the Catholic Church, it had always been the duty of the Church and not of the state, to undertake the seven corporal works of mercy; feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick, visit the prisoner, and bury the dead.¹ By dissolving these institutions, Henry had unwittingly created what would become a social disaster of biblical proportions. In essence, this act was rendering thousands of the poor and elderly without a home or shelter, it denied the country of much of the medical aid that has been offered by the church, it denied future generations of thousands of volumes of books and scriptures from the monastic libraries, as well as denied many an education who would have otherwise never received one without the help of the Church. The ultimate goal of my thesis is to prove my hypothesis that the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII was not merely a contributory factor in the need for the creation of poor laws, but the deciding factor (in a myriad of societal issues) for their creation. High Volume Air Sampling for Viral Aerosols: A Comparative Approach

The United States Air Force has high volume biological air sampling equipment available including the XMX/2L-MIL and DFU-1000. Neither system has been evaluated for effectiveness in the collection of viruses. Furthermore, decontamination methods have not been evaluated for these systems after use in sampling for a viral agent. MS2 bacteriophage was used as a surrogate virus. Aerosolized MS2 was released into a 12 m3 exposure chamber. High and moderate airborne concentrations of MS2 were evaluated. Low volume impingers were used for comparative purposes as well. Samples were analyzed using plaque assay and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). At high viral loads the XMX/2L-MIL and DFU-1000 achieved collection effectiveness equal to or greater than the low volume impingers. At moderate levels of airborne viral load, the XMX/2L-MIL was capable of collecting viral quantities within 25% of the quantities collected by the low volume impingers. The DFU-1000 achieved marginal collection effectiveness of virus at moderate concentrations compared to the XMX/2L-MIL and is considered to be unreliable in the quantification of viral agent at moderate levels and below. The DFU-1000 and XMX/2L-MIL were capable of collecting detectable MS2 with PCR analysis at all concentrations. Exploring the use of lung ultrasound in the cardiac surgery population: a scoping review.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a safe, quick, and portable diagnostic tool which can accurately detect respiratory complications post-surgery without radiation. The aim of this scoping review was to map the evidence base regarding the use of LUS within the cardiac surgery population. JBI methodology for scoping reviews. In total, 90 reports were identified: 73 research studies, 6 narrative reviews, and 11 narrative, opinion and text articles. Studies were predominantly observational cohort and aimed to determine or compare LUS diagnostic ability, prognostic ability or both. LUS methods were heterogenous and variably reported. Despite an increasing number of studies since 2014, standardised protocols for the use of LUS are yet to be widely adopted and remain an important area for further work. Future research should consider exploring perceptions and experiences of LUS, the use of LUS in treatment outcome measurement, and use by non-physician healthcare professionals

Identifying the task characteristics that predict children's construction task performance

Construction tasks form a major part of children’s play and can be linked to achievement in maths and science. However there is a lack of understanding of construction task ability and development. Therefore, there is little foundation for the applied use of construction tasks, such as in teaching or research, as there are no apparent methods for assessing difficulty. This empirical research identifies four construction task characteristics that impact on cognition and predict construction task difficulty in children aged 7-8 and 10-11 years and adults. The results also reveal a developmental trajectory in construction ability. The research provides a method to quantify, predict and control the complexity of construction tasks for future research and to inform applied use

Wet Corn Gluten Feed Levels for Steam-flaked Corn Based Finishing Diets

A finishing trial was conducted to evaluate level of wet corn gluten feed in steam-flaked corn based finishing diets. Feed efficiency and daily gain were similar among all levels (10, 20, 25, 30, and 35%, DM basis) of inclusion of Sweet Bran® wet corn gluten feed evaluated in this trial. These data indicate wet corn gluten feed is similar in energy content to steam-flaked corn based on animal performance
