    Going beyond environmental regulations—The influence of firm size on the effect of green practices on corporate financial performance

    Despite the various environmental regulations to address the negative effect of construction activities on the environment, the construction sector is still slow to implement green practices (GPs). To encourage construction firms to implement GPs, these firms should be convinced that GPs are a financially viable endeavour. This paper aimed to analyse the influence of GPs on corporate financial performance (CFP) and investigate whether firm size influences that effect. A survey was employed to gather information from Malaysian construction firms, and the data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The findings indicate that green supplier management, green subcontractor management, and green project management have significant effects on CFP and that large firms with high levels of green business practices and green project management attained higher CFP than small and medium enterprises. Policymakers and managers should take a flexible approach to boost GPs in the construction industry

    Occupational safety and health management in developing countries: A study of construction companies in Malawi

    Purpose: Whilst occupational safety and health (OSH) management is recognised as an important mechanism for addressing poor OSH performance, limited empirical insight is available on OSH management by construction companies in sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigated OSH management by construction companies (i.e. contractors) in Malawi in order to unpick implementation issues that need attention. Materials and methods: 46 OSH management practices were probed through a survey of contractors. Results: Implementation of OSH practices amongst contractors is low, particularly for practices related to the policy, organising, measuring and reviewing, and auditing elements of OSH management. Company size, is associated with implementation of nearly a half of the 46 OSH practices. Certification of company to Standard No. OHSAS 1800:2007 is associated with the implementation of fewer practices. Conclusions: OSH management improvement efforts would need to focus on the elements with particularly low implementation of practices as well as include initiatives that focus on helping micro enterprises to improve their OSH management. Association between business characteristics and OSH management may be more evident with certain elements such as the organising element. Furthermore, certification to Standard No. OHSAS 1800:2007 may not necessarily translate into greater implementation of OSH management practices, especially in developing countries

    Environmental assessment schemes for non-domestic building refurbishment in the Malaysian context

    The increase in global warming, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions has gained attention in various regions. In Malaysia, the government announced a voluntary commitment to reduce 40% of CO 2 emissions by 2020 and to refurbish 100 government buildings. Existing buildings make a large contribution to energy consumption and CO 2 emissions, therefore refurbishing existing buildings is an essential strategy to achieve the commitment. There is no single assessment scheme for building refurbishment in Malaysia and hence, this study aims to develop a comprehensive list of assessment themes and sub-themes for building refurbishment purposes. It examines and compares 10 assessment schemes from various countries: BREEAM, LEED, CASBEE, BEAM Plus, GBLS, Green Star, HQE, Green Mark, GBI and MyCrest. The findings revealed fourteen themes that were considered for assessment: management, sustainable site, transport, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), water, waste, material, energy, pollution, innovation, economic, social, culture and quality of services. Energy and IEQ are dominant themes in all assessment schemes. Most of the schemes are considered relatively weak in evaluating economic and social aspects, in comparison to environmental aspects. The assessment of quality of services is overlooked in most of the schemes, including GBI and MyCrest in Malaysia. Outcomes from this paper will form the baseline for a new environmental assessment scheme that aimed at non-domestic building refurbishments in Malaysia.
