    Lithium depletion in solar-like stars: effect of overshooting based on realistic multi-dimensional simulations

    We study lithium depletion in low-mass and solar-like stars as a function of time, using a new diffusion coefficient describing extra-mixing taking place at the bottom of a convective envelope. This new form is motivated by multi-dimensional fully compressible, time implicit hydrodynamic simulations performed with the MUSIC code. Intermittent convective mixing at the convective boundary in a star can be modeled using extreme value theory, a statistical analysis frequently used for finance, meteorology, and environmental science. In this letter, we implement this statistical diffusion coefficient in a one-dimensional stellar evolution code, using parameters calibrated from multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of a young low-mass star. We propose a new scenario that can explain observations of the surface abundance of lithium in the Sun and in clusters covering a wide range of ages, from \sim 50 Myr to \sim 4 Gyr. Because it relies on our physical model of convective penetration, this scenario has a limited number of assumptions. It can explain the observed trend between rotation and depletion, based on a single additional assumption, namely that rotation affects the mixing efficiency at the convective boundary. We suggest the existence of a threshold in stellar rotation rate above which rotation strongly prevents the vertical penetration of plumes and below which rotation has small effects. In addition to providing a possible explanation for the long standing problem of lithium depletion in pre-main sequence and main sequence stars, the strength of our scenario is that its basic assumptions can be tested by future hydrodynamic simulations.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Effect of Inoculation with Rhizobacteria and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi on Growth and Yield of Capsicum chinense Jacquin

    We evaluated the effect of two rhizobacteria (Azotobacter chroococcum and Azospirillum brasilense) and a commercial product containing multiple strains of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and an NPK fertiliser on the growth and yield of habanero chilli (Capsicum chinense Jacquin). All treatments were applied as single or combined inoculants, under nursery and field conditions, in a completely randomised design. The biofertilisers were applied to the roots by coating or dipping, with the inoculants in a solid or liquid support, respectively. At 30 days after inoculation, populations of 2.5×106 to 1.3×106 cfu g soil−1 of A. brasilense and 10.3×105 to 2.6×105 of A. chroococcum were detected in the rhizosphere of the crop. The prevalence of colonisation of plants inoculated with AMF ranged from 35 to 57%, with the greatest values recorded for the treatment involving single biofertilisation by root coating. In the nursery phase, single biofertilisation promoted a higher growth and nutrient content in the crop than combined biofertilisation. However, in the field phase the combined biofertilisation increased the nutrient content of the plant leaves, which was significantly greater than observed in the NPK treatment. The highest yields were recorded for the treatments involving a single inoculation of A. chroococcum and for those with the multi-strain of AMF, with average values of 2.5 and 2.3 kg plant−1 respectively, compared with 1.0 kg plant−1 obtained with the treatment in which NPK fertiliser was applied

    The Asymptotic Giant Branches of GCs: Selective Entry Only

    The handful of available observations of AGB stars in Galactic Globular Clusters suggest that the GC AGB populations are dominated by cyanogen-weak stars. This contrasts strongly with the distributions in the RGB (and other) populations, which generally show a 50:50 bimodality in CN band strength. If it is true that the AGB populations show very different distributions then it presents a serious problem for low mass stellar evolution theory, since such a surface abundance change going from the RGB to AGB is not predicted by stellar models. However this is only a tentative conclusion, since it is based on very small AGB sample sizes. To test whether this problem really exists we have carried out an observational campaign specifically targeting AGB stars in GCs. We have obtained medium resolution spectra for about 250 AGB stars across 9 Galactic GCs using the multi-object spectrograph on the AAT (2df/AAOmega). We present some of the preliminary findings of the study for the second parameter trio of GCs: NGC 288, NGC 362 and NGC 1851. The results indeed show that there is a deficiency of stars with strong CN bands on the AGB. To confirm that this phenomenon is robust and not just confined to CN band strengths and their vagaries, we have made observations using FLAMES/VLT to measure elemental abundances for NGC 6752.We present some initial results from this study also. Our sodium abundance results show conclusively that only a subset of stars in GCs experience the AGB phase of evolution.     A well-balanced scheme for the simulation tool-kit A-MaZe: implementation, tests, and first applications to stellar structure

Numerical simulations are an essential tool for this task. We present an extension of the existing numerical tool-kit A-MaZe that enables such simulations of stratified flows in a gravitational field. The finite-volume based, cell-centered, and time-explicit hydrodynamics solver of A-MaZe was extended such that the scheme is now well-balanced in both momentum and energy. The algorithm maintains an initially static balance between gravity and pressure to machine precision. Quasi-stationary convection in slab-geometry preserves gas energy (internal plus kinetic) on average despite strong local up- and down-drafts. By contrast, a more standard numerical scheme is demonstrated to result in substantial gains of energy within a short time on purely numerical grounds. The test is further used to point out the role of dimensionality, viscosity, and Rayleigh number for compressible convection. Applications to a young sun in 2D and 3D, covering a part of the inner radiative zone as well as the outer convective zone, demonstrate that the scheme meets its initial design goal.     Anomalous diffusion associated with nonlinear fractional derivative Fokker-Planck-like equation: Exact time-dependent solutions

    We consider the d=1d=1 nonlinear Fokker-Planck-like equation with fractional derivatives tP(x,t)=Dγxγ[P(x,t)]ν\frac{\partial}{\partial t}P(x,t)=D \frac{\partial^{\gamma}}{\partial x^{\gamma}}[P(x,t) ]^{\nu}. Exact time-dependent solutions are found for ν=2γ1+γ \nu = \frac{2-\gamma}{1+ \gamma} (<γ2-\infty<\gamma \leq 2). By considering the long-distance {\it asymptotic} behavior of these solutions, a connection is established, namely q=γ+3γ+1q=\frac{\gamma+3}{\gamma+1} (0<γ20<\gamma \le 2), with the solutions optimizing the nonextensive entropy characterized by index qq . Interestingly enough, this relation coincides with the one already known for L\'evy-like superdiffusion (i.e., ν=1\nu=1 and 0<γ20<\gamma \le 2). Finally, for (γ,ν)=(2,0)(\gamma,\nu)=(2, 0) we obtain q=5/3q=5/3 which differs from the value q=2q=2 corresponding to the γ=2\gamma=2 solutions available in the literature (ν<1\nu<1 porous medium equation), thus exhibiting nonuniform convergence.Comment: 3 figure

    Analysis of efficiency and profitability of franchise services

    The present study analyses the relative efficiency of franchise services and characterises the best companies, confirming the relationship between efficiency and profit. These companies are from the trade and other services sector , the main group of service-providing companies in the Spanish economy. The methodology calls for first comparing the relative efficiency of franchisers and ownership enterprises. Second, the focus turns to the most efficient franchise services, using a super-efficiency model to rank them. The paper then goes on to cover the analysis of the main characteristics of the best franchise enterprises, the number of own establishments in a franchise business and the profitability of the company. This paper presents arguments as to why companies from the trade and other services sector are included.
