    First results of the two square meters multilayer glass composite mirror design proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array developed at INFN

    The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a future ground-based gamma-ray astronomy detector that will consist of more than 100 Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes of different sizes. The total reflective surface of roughly 10 000 m2^2 requires unprecedented technological efforts towards a cost-efficient production of light-weight and reliable mirror substrates at high production rate. We report on a new mirror concept proposed for CTA developed by INFN, which is based on the replication from a spherical convex mold under low pressure. The mirror substrate is an open structure design made by thin glass layers at the mirror's front and rear interspaced by steel cylinders. A first series of nominal size mirrors has been produced, for which we discuss the optical properties in terms of radius of curvature and focusing power

    The PAU Survey and Euclid: Improving broadband photometric redshifts with multi-task learning

Improving the photo-z quality is a major challenge but is needed to advance our understanding of cosmology. In this paper we explore how the synergies between narrow-band photometric data and large imaging surveys can be exploited to improve broadband photometric redshifts. We used a multi-task learning (MTL) network to improve broadband photo-z estimates by simultaneously predicting the broadband photo-z and the narrow-band photometry from the broadband photometry. The narrow-band photometry is only required in the training field, which also enables better photo-z predictions for the galaxies without narrow-band photometry in the wide field. This technique was tested with data from the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) in the COSMOS field. We find that the method predicts photo-zs that are 13% more precise down to magnitude iAB 1. Applying this technique to deeper samples is crucial for future surveys such as Euclid or LSST. For simulated data, training on a sample with iAB < 23, the method reduces the photo-z scatter by 16% for all galaxies with iAB < 25.     Brain structure in pediatric Tourette syndrome

    Previous studies of brain structure in Tourette syndrome (TS) have produced mixed results, and most had modest sample sizes. In the present multicenter study, we used structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to compare 103 children and adolescents with TS to a well-matched group of 103 children without tics. We applied voxel-based morphometry methods to test gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) volume differences between diagnostic groups, accounting for MRI scanner and sequence, age, sex and total GM+WM volume. The TS group demonstrated lower WM volume bilaterally in orbital and medial prefrontal cortex, and greater GM volume in posterior thalamus, hypothalamus and midbrain. These results demonstrate evidence for abnormal brain structure in children and youth with TS, consistent with and extending previous findings, and they point to new target regions and avenues of study in TS. For example, as orbital cortex is reciprocally connected with hypothalamus, structural abnormalities in these regions may relate to abnormal decision making, reinforcement learning or somatic processing in TS

    Monte Carlo Performance Studies of Candidate Sites for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation gamma-ray observatory with sensitivity in the energy range from 20 GeV to beyond 300 TeV. CTA is proposed to consist of two arrays of 40-100 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, with one site located in each of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The evaluation process for the candidate sites for CTA is supported by detailed Monte Carlo simulations, which take different attributes like site altitude and geomagnetic field configuration into account.     Triangulating molecular evidence to prioritize candidate causal genes at established atopic dermatitis loci

    Genome-wide association studies for atopic dermatitis (AD) have identified 25 reproducible loci. We attempt to prioritize candidate causal genes at these loci using extensive molecular resources compiled into a bioinformatics pipeline. We identified a list of 103 molecular resources for AD aetiology, including expression, protein and DNA methylation QTL datasets in skin or immune-relevant tissues which were tested for overlap with GWAS signals. This was combined with functional annotation using regulatory variant prediction, and features such as promoter-enhancer interactions, expression studies and variant fine-mapping. For each gene at each locus, we condensed the evidence into a prioritization score. Across the investigated loci, we detected significant enrichment of genes with adaptive immune regulatory function and epidermal barrier formation among the top prioritized genes. At 8 loci, we were able to prioritize a single candidate gene (IL6R, ADO, PRR5L, IL7R, ETS1, INPP5D, MDM1, TRAF3). In addition, at 6 of the 25 loci, our analysis prioritizes less familiar candidates (SLC22A5, IL2RA, MDM1, DEXI, ADO, STMN3). Our analysis provides support for previously implicated genes at several AD GWAS loci, as well as evidence for plausible additional candidates at others, which may represent potential targets for drug discovery
