Interaction of weather and field variability on profitability in crop production
The objective of this study was to quantify the often substantial yet somewhat elusive impact of weather, management, and soil spatial variability on within-field profitability in corn and soybean crop production using profitability indices such as profit (net return) and return-on-investment (ROI). We analyzed yield and cropping system data provided by 42 farmers within Central and North Eastern Iowa from 2007 to 2014. The dataset was comprised of 380 site years from 77 fields. Commercial software was used to calculate spatial net return (profit) in crop production, ROI, and standard deviation in profit over time for individual fields. Iowa State University Estimated Costs of Crop Production in Iowa were used to calculate profitability maps. These profitability metrics were then joined with soil attributes (organic matter, drainage, slope), site-specific rainfall, crop rotation and environmental modeling such as soil conditioning index and soil loss by erosion. The relationship between profitability metrics and site-specific field and within-field factors was analyzed for two Iowa landform regions: The Des Moines Lobe and the Iowan Surface. Within both Landform Regions, 10 to 50% of within-field areas had economic losses, especially during 2013 and 2014. We found a higher frequency of economic loss in poorly drained pothole vs. upland areas within the Des Moines Lobe. With each additional inch of May or June rainfall, median field-level profits were reduced by 125 per acre for fields planted to corn. Compared with corn, profitability of soybean fields was unaffected by May rainfall and less affected by June rainfall. The effect of rainfall in eastern Iowa, however, was different than central Iowa, with above normal July rainfall tending to increase profitability by $45 acre with each additional unit of rainfall. Other than soil drainage, we did not find a significant effect of spatial factors on within-field profitability, indicating the predominance of rainfall and cropping systems. The presented analyses are critical for guiding design and development of future studies that can lead to the creation of risk mitigation tools for farmers
Don’t turn your back on the symptoms of psychosis : a proof-of-principle, quasi-experimental public health trial to reduce the duration of untreated psychosis in Birmingham, UK
Background: Reducing the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is an aspiration of international guidelines for first episode psychosis; however, public health initiatives have met with mixed results. Systematic reviews suggest that greater focus on the sources of delay within care pathways, (which will vary between healthcare settings) is needed to achieve sustainable reductions in DUP (BJP 198: 256-263; 2011).
Methods/Design: A quasi-experimental trial, comparing a targeted intervention area with a ‘detection as usual’ area in the same city. A proof-of–principle trial, no a priori assumptions are made regarding effect size; key outcome will be an estimate of the potential effect size for a definitive trial. DUP and number of new cases will be collected over an 18-month period in target and control areas and compared; historical data on DUP collected in both areas over the previous three years, will serve as a benchmark. The intervention will focus on reducing two significant DUP component delays within the overall care pathway: delays within the mental health service and help-seeking delay.
Discussion: This pragmatic trial will be the first to target known delays within the care pathway for those with a first episode of psychosis. If successful, this will provide a generalizable methodology that can be implemented in a variety of healthcare contexts with differing sources of delay.

3-Methyl-1-butanol production in Escherichia coli: random mutagenesis and two-phase fermentation
Interest in producing biofuels from renewable sources has escalated due to energy and environmental concerns. Recently, the production of higher chain alcohols from 2-keto acid pathways has shown significant progress. In this paper, we demonstrate a mutagenesis approach in developing a strain of Escherichia coli for the production of 3-methyl-1-butanol by leveraging selective pressure toward l-leucine biosynthesis and screening for increased alcohol production. Random mutagenesis and selection with 4-aza-d,l-leucine, a structural analogue to l-leucine, resulted in the development of a new strain of E. coli able to produce 4.4 g/L of 3-methyl-1-butanol. Investigation of the host’s sensitivity to 3-methyl-1-butanol directed development of a two-phase fermentation process in which titers reached 9.5 g/L of 3-methyl-1-butanol with a yield of 0.11 g/g glucose after 60 h
Pneumococcal colonization in healthy adult research participants in the conjugate vaccine era, United Kingdom, 2010-2017.
Pneumococcal colonization is rarely studied in adults, except as part of family surveys. We report the outcomes of colonization screening in healthy adults (non-smokers without major comorbidities or contact with children under five years) who had volunteered to take part in clinical research. Using nasal wash culture, we detected colonization in 6.5% (52/795) of volunteers. Serotype 3 was the commonest serotype (10/52). The majority of the remainder (35/52) were non-vaccine serotypes, but we also identified persistent circulation of serotypes 19A and 19F. Resistance to at least one of six antibiotics tested was found in 8/52 isolates
From bone to breast and back - the bone cytokine RANKL and breast cancer
Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) plays a pivotal role in regulating bone homeostasis. Osteoporosis and malignant bone disease secondary to breast cancer are characterized by enhanced RANKL production and increased bone turnover. Thus, denosumab, a monoclonal antibody to RANKL, has been developed and is now approved for various bone loss conditions. Recent results indicate that RANKL may also promote the development and osseous migration of breast cancer
History of adversity, health and psychopathology among prisoners: comparison between men and women
Adversity in childhood, risk behaviors
and psychopathology are highly prevalent phenomena
in inmate populations and have a strong
impact on health. Knowing the differences in these
variables between the sexes is most important in
order to develop appropriate intervention strategies
in a prison context. By administering the
Socio-demographic and Life History Questionnaire
and the Brief Symptoms Inventory, we
sought to characterize adverse childhood experiences
and relate them to risk behaviors and to
psychopathological symptoms, and study the differences
between the 65 male and 42 female detainees
in Portuguese prison establishments. Men
and women report a complex web of adversity in
childhood. In a range of ten possible categories, a
medium value of 5.05 (DP = 2.63) in total adversity
for women and 2.63 (DP = 2.18) for men was
encountered, with the prevalence being significantly
higher within the female population (Z =
-4.33; p = .000). A high prevalence of risk behaviors
and psychopathological symptoms was found
in both groups, the latter being higher among females.
We concluded that the differences between
men and women calls for in depth studies in order
to provide guidelines for intervention projects
in specific populations.
Infância e o Brief Symptons Inventory, procuramos
caracterizar a adversidade na infância, os
comportamentos de risco e as dimensões psicopatológicas,
e averiguar as diferenças entre 65 homens
e 42 mulheres reclusos em estabelecimentos
prisionais Portugueses. Homens e mulheres relatam
um quadro complexo de adversidade na infância.
Num total possÃvel de dez categorias, verificamos
uma média de adversidade total de 5.05
(DP = 2.63) para as mulheres e de 2.63 (DP =
2.18) para os homens, sendo a prevalência significativamente
mais elevada junto da população
feminina (Z = -4.33; p = .000).

Are osteoporotic fractures being adequately investigated?: A questionnaire of GP & orthopaedic surgeons
BACKGROUND: To investigate the current practice of Orthopaedic Surgeons & General Practitioners (GP) when presented with patients who have a fracture, with possible underlying Osteoporosis. METHODS: Questionnaires were sent to 140 GPs and 140 Orthopaedic Surgeons. The participants were asked their routine clinical practice with regard to investigation of underlying osteoporosis in 3 clinical scenarios. 55 year old lady with a low trauma Colles fracture 60 year old lady with a vertebral wedge fracture 70 year old lady with a low trauma neck of femur fracture. RESULTS: Most doctors agreed that patients over 50 years old with low trauma fractures required investigation for osteoporosis, however, most surgeons (56%, n = 66) would discharge patients with low trauma Colles fracture without requesting or initiating investigation for osteoporosis. Most GPs (67%, n = 76) would not investigate a similar patient for osteoporosis, unless prompted by the Orthopaedic Surgeon or patient. More surgeons (71%, n= 83) and GPs (64%, n = 72) would initiate investigations for osteoporosis in a vertebral wedge fracture, but few surgeons (35%, n = 23) would investigate a neck of femur fracture patient after orthopaedic treatment. CONCLUSION: Most doctors know that fragility fractures in patients over 50 years old require investigation for Osteoporosis; however, a large population of patients with osteoporotic fractures are not being given the advantages of secondary prevention
