Preserving Unity: the Threats of Catholicism and National Liberal Support of the Kulturkampf

My source is Vatican I’s “Dogmatic Constitution Pastor aeternus, on the Church of Christ,” which was released by the Vatican Council on 18 July 1870 and codified the doctrines of papal primacy and infallibility. The doctrine of papal primacy declares the pope as the supreme head of the Church, while the infallibility doctrine declares that when the pope speaks “ex cathedra,” he possesses divine infallibility to define doctrines concerning faith and morals. [1] The doctrines of primacy and infallibility made Catholics look like a threat to the German nation. Because Catholics were perceived as a threat, the German government initiated a Kulturkampf—literally “culture war”—to preserve German unity from the supposed disuniting threat of Catholicism. Original Sin in the Smalcald Articles With an Excursus on the Coat of Skins as an Image of Original

In order to understand better how Luther understood original sin in the Smalcald Articles, this paper will compare SA with two other Luther writings, one contemporary with its composition and one from his earlier writings. Since Luther adopted the term original sin, it will be useful to briefly examine the events that led to the coinage of the term by Augustine in addition to examining a few patristic sources in order to see how the idea of original sin was expressed formerly. Finally, Luther\u27s confession of original sin in SA will be addressed to current issues such as the decay of original sin and the reemergence of Pelagianism

Alter egos: An exploration of the perspectives and identities of science comic creators

© 2018 The Author(s). While academic interest in science comics has been growing in recent years, the creators of these materials remain understudied. This research aimed to explore the experiences and views of science comic creators through the lens of science communication. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 science comic creators. Interviewees felt that the visual, narrative, permanent, and approachable qualities of comics made them particularly adept at explaining science and bringing it to new audiences. Science comic creators often had complex identities, occupying an ambiguous territory between 'science' and 'art', but were otherwise unconcerned with strict definitions. They emphasised the importance of balance between entertaining and informing, striving to create an engaging visual narrative without overcrowding it with facts or compromising scientific accuracy. This balancing act, and how they negotiate it, sheds light on what it means to be a science communicator operating in the space between entertainment and information/education
