Superconductivity by long-range color magnetic interaction in high-density quark matter
We argue that in quark matter at high densities, the color magnetic field
remains unscreened and leads to the phenomenon of color superconductivity.
Using the renormalization group near the Fermi surface, we find that the
long-range nature of the magnetic interaction changes the asymptotic behavior
of the gap at large chemical potential qualitatively. We find
, where is the
small gauge coupling. We discuss the possibility of breaking rotational
symmetry by the formation of a condensate with nonzero angular momentum, as
well as interesting parallels to some condensed matter systems with long-range
forces.Comment: 14 pages, REVTEX, uses eps
Temperature and Polarization Patterns in Anisotropic Cosmologies
We study the coherent temperature and polarization patterns produced in
homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models. We show results for all
Bianchi types with a Friedman-Robertson-Walker limit (i.e. Types I, V,
VII, VII and IX) to illustrate the range of possible behaviour. We
discuss the role of spatial curvature, shear and rotation in the geodesic
equations for each model and establish some basic results concerning the
symmetries of the patterns produced. We also give examples of the
time-evolution of these patterns in terms of the Stokes parameters , and

Brane cosmology with curvature corrections
We study the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum brane-world where the
Einstein-Hilbert action is modified by curvature correction terms: a
four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on the brane, and a
five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. The combined effect of these
curvature corrections to the action removes the infinite-density big bang
singularity, although the curvature can still diverge for some parameter
values. A radiation brane undergoes accelerated expansion near the minimal
scale factor, for a range of parameters. This acceleration is driven by the
geometric effects, without an inflaton field or negative pressures. At late
times, conventional cosmology is recovered.Comment: RevTex4, 8 pages, no figures, minor change
Brane World Cosmology with Gauss-Bonnet Interaction
We study a Randall-Sundrum model modified by a Gauss-Bonnet interaction term.
We consider, in particular, a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric on the brane
and analyse the resulting cosmological scenario. It is shown that the usual
Friedmann equations are recovered on the brane. The equation of state relating
the enery density and the pressure is uniquely determined by the matching
conditions. A cosmological solution with negative pressure is found.Comment: 9 pages, revtex styl
Non-Perturbative QCD Treatment of High-Energy Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Total cross-sections and logarithmic slopes of the elastic scattering
cross-sections for different hadronic processes are calculated in the framework
of the model of the stochastic vacuum. The relevant parameters of this model, a
correlation length and the gluon condensate, are determined from scattering
data, and found to be in very good agreement with values coming from completely
different sources of information. A parameter-free relation is given between
total cross-sections and slope parameters, which is shown to be remarkably
valid up to the highest energies for which data exist.Comment: 60 pages, Heidelberg preprin
Getting the strain under control: Trans-Varestraint tests for hot cracking susceptibility
A new method for conducting Trans-Varestraint tests for assessing hot cracking susceptibility is proposed. Experiments were carried out, to validate the new method, with an industrial scale rig using tungsten inert gas welding. The hot cracking susceptibility of API-5L X65 and EN3B steel was compared. The results indicated that, by using the new method, the strain applied to the welding bead and consequently to the solidification front was controlled in a repeatable and reliable way. The results also indicated that EN3B has a maximum crack length (a parameter in the test) higher than X65 and it is reached at lower augmented strain thus demonstrating it is more susceptible to hot cracking, while also indicating that there is a capability of predicting the initiation position of hot cracks during welding. By using the method proposed, the capability of setting standardized test procedures for Trans-Varestraint tests is improved. It is recommended that future tests for assessing hot cracking susceptibility should employ the proposed method in order for the results to be comparable and to also study the effect of strain rate in hot cracking of materials
High throughput toxicity screening and intracellular detection of nanomaterials
EC FP7 NANoREG (Grant Agreement NMP4-LA-2013-310584)Free PMC Article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5215403/With the growing numbers of nanomaterials (NMs), there is a great demand for
rapid and reliable ways of testing NM safety—preferably using in vitro
approaches, to avoid the ethical dilemmas associated with animal research. Data
are needed for developing intelligent testing strategies for risk assessment of
NMs, based on grouping and read-across approaches. The adoption of high
throughput screening (HTS) and high content analysis (HCA) for NM toxicity
testing allows the testing of numerous materials at different concentrations and
on different types of cells, reduces the effect of inter-experimental variation, and
makes substantial savings in time and cost.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Lorentz breaking Effective Field Theory and observational tests
Analogue models of gravity have provided an experimentally realizable test
field for our ideas on quantum field theory in curved spacetimes but they have
also inspired the investigation of possible departures from exact Lorentz
invariance at microscopic scales. In this role they have joined, and sometime
anticipated, several quantum gravity models characterized by Lorentz breaking
phenomenology. A crucial difference between these speculations and other ones
associated to quantum gravity scenarios, is the possibility to carry out
observational and experimental tests which have nowadays led to a broad range
of constraints on departures from Lorentz invariance. We shall review here the
effective field theory approach to Lorentz breaking in the matter sector,
present the constraints provided by the available observations and finally
discuss the implications of the persisting uncertainty on the composition of
the ultra high energy cosmic rays for the constraints on the higher order,
analogue gravity inspired, Lorentz violations.Comment: 47 pages, 4 figures. Lecture Notes for the IX SIGRAV School on

Hidden secrets of deformation: Impact-induced compaction within a CV chondrite
The CV3 Allende is one of the most extensively studied meteorites in worldwide collections. It is currently classified as S1—essentially unshocked—using the classification scheme of Stöffler et al. (1991), however recent modelling suggests the low porosity observed in Allende indicates the body should have undergone compaction-related deformation. In this study, we detail previously undetected evidence of impact through use of Electron Backscatter Diffraction mapping to identify deformation microstructures in chondrules, AOAs and matrix grains. Our results demonstrate that forsterite-rich chondrules commonly preserve crystal-plastic microstructures (particularly at their margins); that low-angle boundaries in deformed matrix grains of olivine have a preferred orientation; and that disparities in deformation occur between chondrules, surrounding and non-adjacent matrix grains. We find heterogeneous compaction effects present throughout the matrix, consistent with a highly porous initial material. Given the spatial distribution of these crystal-plastic deformation microstructures, we suggest that this is evidence that Allende has undergone impact-induced compaction from an initially heterogeneous and porous parent body. We suggest that current shock classifications (Stöffler et al., 1991) relying upon data from chondrule interiors do not constrain the complete shock history of a sample
Social Media and the Politics of Gender, Race and Identity: The case of Serena Williams.
This study investigates issues of gender, race and identity, as enacted through social media, focusing on the abuse experienced by tennis player Serena Williams during the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. A netnographic analysis of discriminatory or abusive comments relating to Williams were collected from 24 sites on two social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter. These platforms are popular sites commonly used for fan/athlete interaction. Williams identifies as female and African American, therefore intersectionality is adopted to examine the representation of Williams in social media spaces. Several pertinent themes were uncovered relating to Williams including ‘Gender questioning’, ‘Accusations of performance enhancing drugs use’ and ‘Racism’. Such themes showed a simultaneous overlapping of multiple forms of oppression encountered by Williams, reinforcing the notion of the black female athlete as ‘other’ in virtual spaces. Such oppression is perpetuated by the online environment
