The Use of Probability in Quantum Mechanics to Calculate Measurement Outcomes
The concept of probability can help measure some of the possible outcomes of different experiments in the field of quantum mechanics. Those experiments include Thomas Young\u27s double slit experiment, the Schrödinger equation, the wave function, and the Born Rule, which all make use of probability to predict the placement of certain subatomic particles including photons of light, in the experiments. International Influence on the Development and Reception of Cello Playing in England, 1870–1930: Robert Hausmann, Auguste Van Biene, and Guilhermina Suggia
The development of cello playing in England in the late nineteenth century was driven largely by the efforts of expatriate and visiting performers trained elsewhere. Performers from abroad, with the support and admiration of British institutions and audiences, elevated the technical level of cello playing and helped to increase the quality and quantity of solo repertoire being written and performed. They also expanded the degree of acceptance that British audiences held for the cello, both as a solo instrument and as an instrument that could be played in public by women. This study explores the impact that three such cellists, Robert Hausmann (1852–1909), Auguste Van Biene (1849–1913), and Guilhermina Suggia (1885–1950), had on the development of cello playing in England through their personal and professional activities.
Berlin-based cello professor Robert Hausmann, a close associate of Johannes Brahms and Joseph Joachim, made frequent extended visits to London over a period of forty years, performing the British premieres of countless chamber music works and forging fruitful relationships with British performers and composers. Dutch cellist Auguste Van Biene, after training in Belgium and launching a brief concert career in London, became a household name through his work as an actor-cellist in music hall dramas, giving thousands of performances on tours across all of Great Britain and around the world. Guilhermina Suggia, originally from Portugal and trained in Leipzig, lived in London for many years at the height of her career, establishing a visible presence as a glamorous, charismatic, and technically unrivalled soloist.
The aim of this study is to draw a nuanced picture of the impact that these influential performers had on audiences and on other musicians in England. Their choices of who to work with, what to program, where to play, and in what manner, affected what was expected and what was valued by the general public and by musical institutions. To assess the broad influence that these cellists had, this study investigates a wide range of sources including published scholarship, contemporaneous music journals, mainstream newspaper coverage from both London and smaller provincial centers, published music editions, essays, letters, iconography, and the limited available recordings of Van Biene and Suggia

Introduction Varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes varicella (chicken pox) and
herpes zoster (shingles). Worldwide, these diseases are associated with
significant morbidity. Most of the epidemiological data on VZV come from high
income countries. There are few data on VZV in Africa, where tropical climates
and high HIV/AIDS prevalence rates are expected to impact the epidemiology of
VZV. Safe and effective vaccinations for both varicella and herpes zoster
exist, but are not routinely used in Africa. There are very few data available
on VZV disease burden in Africa to guide the introduction of these vaccines on
the continent. Our aim is to conduct a systematic review of the VZV-associated
morbidity and mortality in Africa, which will provide critical information
that could be used to develop vaccination policies against these diseases in
Africa. Methods and analysis Electronic databases will be searched and all
studies published after 1974 that meet predefined criteria will be assessed.
The primary outcomes for the study are VZV incidence/prevalence,
hospitalisation rates and total death rates. The secondary outcome for this
study is the proportion of VZV hospitalisations and/or deaths associated with
HIV/AIDS. Two reviewers will screen the titles and abstracts, and then
independently review the full texts, to determine if studies are eligible for
inclusion. A risk of bias and quality assessment tool will be used to score
all included studies. Following standardised data extraction, a trend analysis
using R-programming software will be conducted to investigate the trend of
VZV. Depending on the characteristics of included studies, subgroup analyses
will be performed. This review will be reported according to the Preferred
Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.
Ethics and dissemination As this is a protocol for a systematic review, which
will use already published data, no ethics approval is required. Findings will
be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals. Trial registration number

Mechanistic insights into the activation of the IKK kinase complex by the Kaposi’s Sarcoma Herpes virus oncoprotein vFLIP
Constitutive activation of the canonical NF-κB signaling pathway is a major factor in Kaposi’s Sarcoma Herpes virus (KSHV) pathogenesis where it is essential for the survival of primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). Central to this process is persistent upregulation of the inhibitor of κB kinase (IKK) kinase complex by the virally encoded oncoprotein vFLIP. Although the physical interaction between vFLIP and the IKK kinase regulatory component essential for persistent activation, IKKγ, has been well characterized, it remains unclear how the kinase subunits are rendered active mechanistically. Using a combination of cell-based assays, biophysical techniques, and structural biology, we demonstrate here that vFLIP alone is sufficient to activate the IKK kinase complex. Furthermore, we identify weakly stabilised, high molecular weight vFLIP-IKKγ assemblies that are key to the activation process. Taken together, our results are the first to reveal that vFLIP induced NF-κB activation pivots on the formation of structurally specific vFLIP-IKKγ multimers which have an important role in rendering the kinase subunits active through a process of autophosphorylation. This mechanism of NF-κB activation is in contrast to those utilised by endogenous cytokines and cellular FLIP homologues
A comparative study of WASP-67b and HAT-P-38b from WFC3 data
Atmospheric temperature and planetary gravity are thought to be the main
parameters affecting cloud formation in giant exoplanet atmospheres. Recent
attempts to understand cloud formation have explored wide regions of the
equilibrium temperature-gravity parameter space. In this study, we instead
compare the case of two giant planets with nearly identical equilibrium
temperature ( ) and gravity (. During Cycle 23, we collected WFC3/G141
observations of the two planets, WASP-67 b and HAT-P-38 b. HAT-P-38 b, with
mass 0.42 M and radius 1.4 , exhibits a relatively
clear atmosphere with a clear detection of water. We refine the orbital period
of this planet with new observations, obtaining . WASP-67 b, with mass 0.27 M and radius 0.83
, shows a more muted water absorption feature than that of
HAT-P-38 b, indicating either a higher cloud deck in the atmosphere or a more
metal-rich composition. The difference in the spectra supports the hypothesis
that giant exoplanet atmospheres carry traces of their formation history.
Future observations in the visible and mid-infrared are needed to probe the

Inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway activates autophagy and compensatory Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signalling in prostate cancer
The PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway is frequently activated in advanced prostate cancer, due to loss of the tumour suppressor PTEN, and is an important axis for drug development. We have assessed the molecular and functional consequences of pathway blockade by inhibiting AKT and mTOR kinases either in combination or as individual drug treatments. In established prostate cancer cell lines, a decrease in cell viability and in phospho-biomarker expression was observed. Although apoptosis was not induced, a G1 growth arrest was observed in PTEN null LNCaP cells, but not in BPH1 or PC3 cells. In contrast, when the AKT inhibitor AZD7328 was applied to patient-derived prostate cultures that retained expression of PTEN, activation of a compensatory Ras/MEK/ERK pathway was observed. Moreover, whilst autophagy was induced following treatment with AZD7328, cell viability was less affected in the patient-derived cultures than in cell lines. Surprisingly, treatment with a combination of both AZD7328 and two separate MEK1/2 inhibitors further enhanced phosphorylation of ERK1/2 in primary prostate cultures. However, it also induced irreversible growth arrest and senescence.Ex vivo treatment of a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) of prostate cancer with a combination of AZD7328 and the mTOR inhibitor KU-0063794, significantly reduced tumour frequency upon re-engraftment of tumour cells.The results demonstrate that single agent targeting of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway triggers activation of the Ras/MEK/ERK compensatory pathway in near-patient samples. Therefore, blockade of one pathway is insufficient to treat prostate cancer in man
Weeds in organic fertility-building leys:aspects of species richness and weed management
Legume-based leys (perennial sod crops) are an important component of fertility management in organic rotations in many parts of Europe. Despite their importance, however, relatively little is known about how these leys affect weed communities or how the specific composition of leys may contribute to weed management. To determine whether the choice of plant species in the ley affects weeds, we conducted replicated field trials at six locations in the UK over 24 months, measuring weed cover and biomass in plots sown with monocultures of 12 legume and 4 grass species and in plots sown with a mixture of 10 legume species and 4 grass species. Additionally, we monitored weed communities in leys on 21 organic farms across the UK either sown with a mixture of the project species or the farmers? own species mix. In total, 63 weed species were found on the farms, with the annuals Stellaria media, Sonchus arvensis, and Veronica persica being the most frequent species in the first year after establishment of the ley, while Stellaria media and the two perennials Ranunculus repens and Taraxacum officinale dominated the weed spectrum in the second year. Our study shows that organic leys constitute an important element of farm biodiversity. In both replicated and on-farm trials, weed cover and species richness were significantly lower in the second than in the first year, owing to lower presence of annual weeds in year two. In monocultures, meadow pea (Lathyrus pratensis) was a poor competitor against weeds, and a significant increase in the proportion of weed biomass was observed over time, due to poor recovery of meadow pea after mowing. For red clover (Trifolium pratense), we observed the lowest proportion of weed biomass in total biomass among the tested legume species. Crop biomass and weed biomass were negatively correlated across species. Residuals from the linear regression between crop biomass and weed biomass indicated that at similar levels of crop biomass, grasses had lower weed levels than legumes. We conclude that choice of crop species is an important tool for weed management in leys.authorsversionPeer reviewe
