Parallel Ada benchmarks for the SVMS
The use of parallel processing paradigm to design and develop faster and more reliable computers appear to clearly mark the future of information processing. NASA started the development of such an architecture: the Spaceborne VHSIC Multi-processor System (SVMS). Ada will be one of the languages used to program the SVMS. One of the unique characteristics of Ada is that it supports parallel processing at the language level through the tasking constructs. It is important for the SVMS project team to assess how efficiently the SVMS architecture will be implemented, as well as how efficiently Ada environment will be ported to the SVMS. AUTOCLASS II, a Bayesian classifier written in Common Lisp, was selected as one of the benchmarks for SVMS configurations. The purpose of the R and D effort was to provide the SVMS project team with the version of AUTOCLASS II, written in Ada, that would make use of Ada tasking constructs as much as possible so as to constitute a suitable benchmark. Additionally, a set of programs was developed that would measure Ada tasking efficiency on parallel architectures as well as determine the critical parameters influencing tasking efficiency. All this was designed to provide the SVMS project team with a set of suitable tools in the development of the SVMS architecture
Ada in AI or AI in Ada. On developing a rationale for integration
The use of Ada as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) language is gaining interest in the NASA Community, i.e., by parties who have a need to deploy Knowledge Based-Systems (KBS) compatible with the use of Ada as the software standard for the Space Station. A fair number of KBS and pseudo-KBS implementations in Ada exist today. Currently, no widely used guidelines exist to compare and evaluate these with one another. The lack of guidelines illustrates a fundamental problem inherent in trying to compare and evaluate implementations of any sort in languages that are procedural or imperative in style, such as Ada, with those in languages that are functional in style, such as Lisp. Discussed are the strengths and weakness of using Ada as an AI language and a preliminary analysis provided of factors needed for the development of criteria for the integration of these two families of languages and the environments in which they are implemented. The intent for developing such criteria is to have a logical rationale that may be used to guide the development of Ada tools and methodology to support KBS requirements, and to identify those AI technology components that may most readily and effectively be deployed in Ada
Arresting woodland bird decline in Australian agricultural landscapes: potential application of the European agri-environment model
This paper considered the applicability of the European model of land stewardship payments, in particular its support for biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes, to an Australian context. More broadly, the research approach described in the paper may also be applied to assessing the suitability of overseas stewardship schemes to the provision of any ecoservice in
Australia, such as carbon sequestration and floodwater regulation
Analysis of the Socio-Environmental Impacts of the Proposed Transboundary Highway between Pucallpa, Peru and Cruzeiro do Sul, Brazil
As road building across the Amazon continues to be proposed by both Brazilian and Peruvian governments, it becomes increasingly important to consider the effects this infrastructure could have on diverse Amazonian cultures and ecosystems. One proposal being discussed is a 200 km road that would connect the cities of Pucallpa, Peru and Cruzeiro do Sul, Brazil. While promoted as economically beneficial, the road could infringe upon protected conservation areas and indigenous lands, bringing illegal activity with it as well. This research aims to evaluate the potential impacts the Pucallapa-Cruzeiro do Sul road project presents to the ecosystems, societies, and economies of the southwestern Amazon using a mixed methodology including geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and a literature review of previous studies on the impact of roads in tropical forests. These analyses will attempt to express the scale of the repercussions that road construction may bring to the bioculturally rich Amazon borderlands
Joubert syndrome diagnosed renally late
Joubert syndrome is a genetically heterogeneous multisystem disorder typically diagnosed in childhood. Nephronophthisis is the most common renal pathology in Joubert syndrome, and renal failure usually occurs in childhood or in young adults. We report a 61-year-old female diagnosed with AHI1-related oculorenal Joubert syndrome, who presented initially with decline in renal function in her 50s. Our report describes exceptionally late presentation of renal disease in Joubert syndrome and highlights the importance of continued renal function monitoring in older adults with Joubert syndrome
Dynamic measurements and simulations of airborne picolitre-droplet coalescence in holographic optical tweezers
We report studies of the coalescence of pairs of picolitre aerosol droplets manipulated with holographic optical tweezers, probing the shape relaxation dynamics following coalescence by simultaneously monitoring the intensity of elastic backscattered light (EBL) from the trapping laser beam (time resolution on the order of 100 ns) while recording high frame rate camera images (time resolution <10 µs). The goals of this work are to: resolve the dynamics of droplet coalescence in holographic optical traps; assign the origin of key features in the time-dependent EBL intensity; and validate the use of the EBL alone to precisely determine droplet surface tension and viscosity. For low viscosity droplets, two sequential processes are evident: binary coalescence first results from overlap of the optical traps on the timescale of microseconds followed by recapture of the composite droplet in an optical trap on the timescale of milliseconds. As droplet viscosity increases, the relaxation in droplet shape eventually occurs on the same timescale as recapture, resulting in a convoluted evolution of the EBL intensity that inhibits quantitative determination of the relaxation timescale. Droplet coalescence was simulated using a computational framework to validate both experimental approaches. The results indicate that time-dependent monitoring of droplet shape from the EBL potential of high frame rate imaging to examine the coalescence of dissimilar viscosity droplets is discussed
The use of mid-infrared spectrometry to predict body energy status of Holstein cows
Energy balance, especially in early lactation, is known to be associated with subsequent health and fertility in dairy cows. However, its inclusion in routine management decisions or breeding programs is hindered by the lack of quick, easy, and inexpensive measures of energy balance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of mid-infrared (MIR) analysis of milk, routinely available from all milk samples taken as part of large-scale milk recording and milk payment operations, to predict body energy status and related traits in lactating dairy cows. The body energy status traits investigated included energy balance and body energy content. The related traits of body condition score and energy intake were also considered. Measurements on these traits along with milk MIR spectral data were available on 17 different test days from 268 cows (418 lactations) and were used to develop the prediction equations using partial least squares regression. Predictions were externally validated on different independent subsets of the data and the results averaged. The average accuracy of predicting body energy status from MIR spectral data was as high as 75% when energy balance was measured across lactation. These predictions of body energy status were considerably more accurate than predictions obtained from the sometimes proposed fat-to-protein ratio in milk. It is not known whether the prediction generated from MIR data are a better reflection of the true (unknown) energy status than the actual energy status measures used in this study. However, results indicate that the approach described may be a viable method of predicting individual cow energy status for a large scale of application
Low temperature (down to 450° C) annealed TiAl contacts on N-type gallium nitride characterized by differential scanning calorimetry
International audienceThis work reports on Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements performed on Ti-Al metallic layers stacks deposited on n+-GaN. The aim is to get better understanding of the mechanisms leading to ohmic contact formation during the annealing stage. Two exothermic peaks were found, one below 500°C and the other one around 660°C. They can be respectively attributed to Al3Ti and Al2Ti compounds formation. The locations of these peaks provide clear evidence of solid-solid reac-tions. Lowest contact resistance is well correlated with the presence of Al3Ti compound, corresponding to Al(200nm)/Ti(50nm) stoichiometric ratio. Subsequently, Al(200 nm)Ti(50 nm) stacks on n+-GaN were annealed from 400°C to 650°C. Specific Contact Resistivity (SCR) values stay in the mid 10-5 Ω.cm² range for annealing temperatures between 450°C and 650°C. Such low-temperature annealed contacts on n+-GaN may open new device processing routes, simpler and cheaper, in which Ohmic and Schottky contacts are annealed together
‘I’d rather you didn’t come’: The impact of stigma on exercising with epilepsy
Epilepsy is a common but hidden disorder, leading to stigma in everyday life. Despite stigma being widely researched, little is known about the impact of stigma for people with epilepsy within a sports and exercise setting. Using constructionist grounded theory, we explored the barriers and adaptations to exercise for people with epilepsy. Three focus groups (2-3 participants per group) and three semi-structured interviews were conducted (11 participants total). Stigma negatively impacted joining team sports, running groups, and disclosure to others. The effect of stigma was reduced by educating others about epilepsy, thus creating more awareness and understanding
