    Rapic project: toward a new generation of inexpensive heat exchanger-reactors for process intensification

    Process intensification (PI) in chemical production is a major concern of chemical manufacturers. This alternative technology involves transposing syntheses into continuous plug flow reactors with process intensification, leading to a multifunctional heat exchanger-reactor. In this context, the RAPIC R&D project aims to develop an innovative low-cost component (in the 10 kg/hour range). This project deals with the design from the local to the global scale and with testing, from elementary mock-ups to pilot scale. The present paper gives a detailed description of this research project and presents the main results on specification and definition of the reaction channel and the first simple mock-ups

    Kissing in Marital and Cohabiting Relationships: Effects on Blood Lipids, Stress, and Relationship Satisfaction

    Affection exchange theory and previous research suggest that affectionate behavior has stress-ameliorating effects. On this basis, we hypothesized that increasing affectionate behavior would effect improvements in physical and psychological conditions known to be exacerbated by stress. This study tested this proposition by examining the effects of increased romantic kissing on blood lipids, perceived stress, depression, and relationship satisfaction. Fifty-two healthy adults who were in marital or cohabiting romantic relationships provided self-report data for psychological outcomes and blood samples for hematological tests, and were then randomly assigned to experimental and control groups for a 6-week trial. Those in the experimental group were instructed to increase the frequency of romantic kissing in their relationships; those in the control group received no such instructions. After 6 weeks, psychological and hematological tests were repeated. Relative to the control group, the experimental group experienced improvements in perceived stress, relationship satisfaction, and total serum cholesterol

    A Change of Perspective: How User Orientation Influences the Perception of Physicalizations

    As physicalizations encode data in their physical 3D form, the orientation in which the user is viewing the physicalization may impact the way the information is perceived. However, this relation between user orientation and perception of physical properties is not well understood or studied. To investigate this relation, we conducted an experimental study with 20 participants who viewed 6 exemplars of physicalizations from 4 different perspectives. Our findings show that perception is directly influenced by user orientation as it affects (i) the number and type of clusters, (ii) anomalies and (iii) extreme values identified within a physicalization. Our results highlight the complexity and variability of the relation between user orientation and perception of physicalizations

    The use of shift reagents in ion mobility-mass spectrometry: studies on the complexation of an active pharmaceutical ingredient with polyethylene glycol excipients

    Gas-phase ion mobility studies of mixtures containing polyethylene glycols (PEG) and an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), Lamivudine, have been carried out using electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-IMS-Q-TOF). In addition to protonated and cationised PEG oligomers, a series of high molecular weight ions were observed and identified as non-covalent complexes formed between Lamivudine and PEG oligomers. The non-covalent complex ions were dissociated using collision induced dissociation (CID) after separation in the ion mobility drift tube to recover the protonated Lamivudine free from interfering matrix ions and with a drift time associated with the precursor complex. The potential of PEG excipients to act as ‘shift reagents’, which enhance selectivity by moving the mass/mobility locus to an area of the spectrum away from interferences, is demonstrated for the analysis of Lamivudine in a Combivir formulation containing PEG and Lamivudine
